1 Trinity Presbyterian Church 4601 S. Surprise Way, Boise ID Don t Go To Church, Be The Church! By Barbara Campbell The weekend of May 23rd & 24th has been scheduled for the first of two 5 th Sunday volunteer events, sponsored by Trinity s Mission Committee. Building on the success of last year s Inside Out Sundays, the Mission Committee hopes to sign up volunteers to work on a number of different hands on projects in the community in May and again in August. During the weekend of May 23rd & 24th, volunteers have the option of working at several different sites such as the Ronald McDonald House, The ARC, the IRC (International Rescue Committee for Refugees) or an on site project at Trinity. The onsite project was organized in conjunction with the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Program and involves assembling Health Kits which will be shipped to Haiti. Information describing the specific items needed for the kits has been included in the bulletins each Sunday and boxes are available in the lobby for donated items. The 5 th Sunday concept is a means by which Trinity members can be involved in Hands on mission work in the community. Instead of going to Church, members are being the Church in a direct and tangible way. The Mission Committee members hope you will join us by actively participating in one of the many opportunities available on Saturday or Sunday, May 23, and 24 th. Look for sign up sheets in the church lobby every Sunday between services. 2 Musings... By Pastor Joe Religionless Christianity is a phrase being thrown about now a days and is getting a lot of press and Facebook time. Those advocating religionless Christianity are often frustrated with organized religion in general and institutional Christianity in particular. Over the years, I have found that there is a tension between church as an organization and church as an organism. The danger of religionless Christianity is that it is the ultimate expression of individualism; basically the creating of church after my own image. All of this is at the expense of community. However, according to Jesus, it is in community that he is particularly present. As a pastor of a church and part of a connectional church system, it is tempting at times to totally ditch organized religion or the institutional church. In 31 years of ministry, I have seen the institutional church at its best and at its worst. Personally however, I have not found Biblical warrant to abandon ship, but that does not mean I will quit trying to find better ways to keep the boat afloat. By Annette Slaybaugh Spring has finally appeared, and to support that, the teachers are busy engaging the children in learning programs that fold into the season. Each age group is working with letters, numbers and projects that can inspire and delight their senses in an age appropriate way. May is a busy month for the children with the annual Mothers Day Luncheon on May 8 th and the Graduation Party for preschoolers on May 19 th. Donna, our director, has been continuing to work with the IdahoSTARS program on program enhancement grants and continued education for the staff. Our numbers continue to remain strong, and we are looking forward to a fun filled summer program. Fall 2010 registration has ended, and we are analyzing the transportation needs for the local elementary schools that have children enrolled in our after school program. As the school year draws to a close we are truly pleased with the growth and development of our class programs this year. Hard work and attendance at continued education classes by our teachers, both leads and assistants, has benefited the children in all the classrooms. Thank you to the members of Trinity Presbyterian Church for your continued support of this very powerful mission focusing on the children of southeast Boise. MOPS By Michelle Bissey MOPS The next Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) meeting will be Sunday, May 2, 2010 from 5 7 PM. This will be our last meeting before the summer break. We invite all mothers of children from birth through kindergarten to join us for a fun evening. Our group will be having pizza and playing the game Bunco at this meeting. Nursery care is available. TRINITY TREASURES The MOPS group would like to thank our guest speakers from our April meeting. Willie Scheel shared her inspirational story of her life and faith experiences. Missy Coman used her experience in real estate and decorating to answer questions related to home beautification. Thank you Willie and Missy! FROM THE LIBRARY By Connie Hoselton Trinity has a new book in it s library, The Hedge People: How I Kept My Sanity And Sense Of Humor As An Alzheimer s Caregiver by Louise Carey. In this book, she helps you find humor in the unpredictable journey of caring for the elderly. Written from her experience as a caregiver, Carey offers you solace in the stories and joy in the journey as you face the daily challenges of care giving with God s help. Page 2

By Connie Hoselton The Case For Christ by Lee Strobel is now available in the Trinity library. Retracing his own spiritual journey from atheism to faith, Lee Strobel, former legal editor of the Chicago Tribune, cross examines a dozen experts with doctorates from schools like Cambridge, Princeton, and Brandeis all of whom are recognized authorities in the own fields. Strobel challenges them with questions like How reliable is the New Testament? Does evidence fro Jesus exist outside the Bible? and Is there any reason to believe the resurrection was an actual event? Strobel s tough, point blank questions make this Gold Medallion winning book read like a captivating, fast paced novel. But it s not fiction. It s a riveting quest for the truth about history s most compelling figure. What will your verdict be in The Case For Christ? VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL By Jill Gable Ahoy Mateys! 4 FINANCIAL PEACE UNIVERSITY MISSION YARD SALE By Pastor Joe As a service to our greater Community, our session has approved the offering of Dave Ramsey s Financial Peace University. What is Financial Peace University? Financial Peace University is a life changing program that teaches you to achieve your financial goals by eliminating debt, saving for the future, and giving like never before. More than 1 million families have attended FPU with amazing results. Some of your friends and neighbors have attended FPU and perhaps you have talked with them. The program is designed for adults but teenagers are also urged to attend. You can never be too young to learn about personal financial management. Why Should You Attend Financial Peace University? During this Great Recession, the need for personal financial responsibility has never been greater. With a divorce rate of Christians nearing 50%, money problems are listed as the number one cause. 70% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and are only two paychecks away from homelessness. Those attending Financial Peace University, on average, reduce their debt by $5,300 and save $2,700 dollars in 91 days. That s an $8,000 turn around! Who is Dave Ramsey? Aside from writing a financial advice column in the Statesman, Dave s financial expertise comes from personal experience. After graduating from the University of Tennessee in 1982 with a degree in Business Administration, by age 26 he had built a real estate portfolio worth more than $4 million. His success came to an end in 1986 when he had to file for bankruptcy. Dave began counseling couples at his local church and after extensive research wrote his first book Financial Peace in Later he developed Financial Peace University to help people learn about cash flow planning, investing, saving, credit, retirement, and giving. When is Financial Peace University? The Classes will start August 26, and meet from 6:30 8:30 pm, for 13 weeks. Cost? The cost of Financial Peace University is $93.00 per family unit; which includes membership with materials. Nancy has already told me, We ll be there. By Barbara Campbell One man s junk is another man s treasure or so the saying goes Here is your chance to look for great treasures, collectibles, and maybe the find of a life time! Trinity s Mission Committee is sponsoring a Yard Sale to coincide with the Surprise Valley Yard Sale scheduled on Saturday June 12 from 8:00 am 12 noon. The yard sale will be located in the court yard area where the outside tables and chairs are located. To make this Yard Sale a success, we are hoping for donations of used merchandise that others would like to buy. Here is your chance to clean out those closets, spare bedrooms, and garages, and donate those items for a good cause. We will accept just about anything. Things that sell are toys, baby items, books, clothing, kitchen items, small pieces of furniture such as end tables, etc. All proceeds from the yard sale will go towards our International Mission, Educate Peru. Donated items will be accepted after May 12 and can be brought to Room 8 at Trinity. The Mission Committee thanks you for your support. We know this will be an incredible Yard Sale with something for everyone! You may be surprised at what you might find! Page 4

YOUTH By Pastor Joe Since Man Up, was the theme of the Junior and Senior High Youth retreat in McCall, we recently had a Girls Night Out for our junior highers. They went to Ceramica and made ice cream floats, and are looking forward to future all girl events. On Friday May 14 th boys and girls will be going to Wahooz for games and Pizza. The NBT (next big thing) is the Mission trip to the Indian reservation near Pendleton, Oregon. There we will be in charge of teaching Vacation Bible School and do some clean up repair projects on the reservation. We will be staying in Tee Pees, eating a salmon dinner prepared by the tribe, going to the museum, and other activities. It should be a great learning experience as well, with some fun thrown in. Before we go and serve in Oregon, our youth will be serving The Boise Rescue Mission on Sunday May 16, to help with both dinners and in the warehouse. Our Junior and Senior Youth Ministry takes our church s mission statement, to in the name of Jesus give hope by making a tangible difference in our local and global community, very seriously.
