1 Trinity Presbyterian Church 4601 S. Surprise Way, Boise ID FUSION According to Webster s Dictionary, fusion is a merging of diverse, distinct, or separate elements into a unified whole. Fusion sounds like a good word to describe what it means to become an active member of a faith community. In fact church seems to be an ongoing fusion process as diverse and distinct people merge forming community. The fusion process itself can happen in a variety of ways from haphazard to intentional and everything in between. Rick Warren in his book, The Purpose Driven Church, talks about five circles of commitment; Community, Crowd, Congregation, Committed, and Core. Rick also says that one of the goals of a living, growing church is to help people move from the outer circles to the inner circle, from low commitment/spiritual maturity to high commitment//high spiritual maturity. We discovered through some of our congregational research last year that this was one area of the life of our church where we had lots of room for improvement. This Year our Evangelism Elder together with our Fellowship & Worship Elders and others have formed a task force to create and implement strategies that help people move from the outer circles to the inner circles. We are calling this Fusion. We will have to change some things as we put some of the strategies in place. They say insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Our leadership believes that whatever changes Fusion brings to our church it is for the better and will serve our people better. By Pastor Joe LENTEN STUDY By Reverend Lee Hicks Trinity is offering a special Lenten Study on Wednesday afternoons (1:00 2:15 pm) in the Fireside room, with retired Pastor Lee Hicks. This study is designed for Seniors who would rather not drive at night in the winter, and for those who schedules prefer an afternoon time. Four words describe this class: Teaching, Discussion, Sharing and Praying. It will also be somewhat tied in to Pastor Joe s Lenten preaching series. The two texts include Richard Foster s classic, Celebration of Discipline and Brian McLaren s Finding Our Way Again. We will be looking at the ancient spiritual disciplines from Biblical times down to the present. Finding Our Way Again is a guidebook to these ancient paths, and discovering why these practices are indispensable for our individual lives and for the health of our society. If you are interested, please phone the Church office at and Pre Register by February 14th. This will allow time to prepare class materials. 2 Musings... By Pastor Joe In her book, Contagious Joy, Barbara Johnson writes: So much of the time our prayers are only pleas for help. God welcomes those needy prayers, but just as any parent gets tired of hearing, Please, please, please, so does God. And of course we know to thank God for all the blessings God has bestowed on us. Barbara says that God likes to hear our words of gratitude as well. In reading and praying the psalms one of the thing that struck me is that there are psalms that don t ask anything of God, but do nothing but praise and thanks to God for what the psalmist has seen and hear and received perhaps without asking. The more I read the psalms the more I realize that the psalmists had an attitude of gratitude, and it serve him or her well in their life and their life with God. When asked about his greatest lessons learned, J. Ellsworth Kalas, the 86 year old president of Asbury Seminary said, Buy a house on Gratitude Street. Do so as soon as you can, because this is the only place to live, and the longer you live there the more you ll love it. And believe me, you will enjoy your neighbors. Good advice from a wise sage. MISSION SPAGHETTI DINNER By Barbara Campbell Trinity s annual Spaghetti Feed, sponsored by the Mission Committee, is scheduled for Saturday, February 27th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.. 3 MOVIE NIGHTS AT TRINITY! TRINITY TREASURES By Annette Slaybaugh 2009 was a rewarding year at Trinity Treasures. We closed the year in a positive financial position, and are making plans for a successful Although we have lost a few families to the economic downturn, we remain strong with 90 children coming through our doors each week. As we face the year ahead we continue to be excited about the opportunity to bring a high quality, Christ centered childcare and preschool program to our community. Our Director, Donna Cerchoine continues to aggressively improve our strong academic and nurturing programs through participation in the IdahoSTARS the state sponsored childcare evaluation and education program. We have four motivated and dedicated members of TPC that are sitting on our Trinity Treasures Advisory Board. Ruth Calnon is working on parent/child workshops that focus on academic readiness. Erma Hultman is working on Christian Education programs for the older children. Lloyd Thompson makes sure that our vehicles and facility stay in good order, and Terry Calnon provides much appreciated financial analysis support. And we have two parent volunteers, Melissa Hale and Kathy Kilburg, who provide valuable parent insight and support for our many other projects. As I look back on 2009, and plan for 2010, I am so very grateful for the wonderful support that comes from these caring volunteers. Our church is touching many lives with the message of Christ through this ministry. We thank you for your continued support and prayers in this effort. Join us for Trinity Movie Nights! On the third Friday of the month through May, we will share snacks (including popcorn of course!) in the commons area from 6 7 pm while we show something for smaller children to enjoy in the Sanctuary. At 7 pm the main feature will begin. All movies are G or PG and we are mixing comedies and action / suspense. Bring your blankets and escape to a relaxing night with friends of all ages. You are welcome to bring a snack to share, but it is not required. We have lots of seats so invite your neighbors and friends, it s a fun, relaxing way to end a hectic week! Upcoming movies include: Sky High, Nim s Island, Narnia:The Lion, Witch & the Wardrobe, Bolt, National Treasure:Book of Secrets, Kitt Kittridge: An American Girl & Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. Check the Spark for the exact movie showing each month. Sponsored by F.A.T. (Families At Trinity), questions? Our second workshop will be led by Terry De Spain, an early childhood consultant from IdahoSTARS who will present a parent workshop for parents of children ages 2 and 3. Childcare will be provided. More information will be available in the Church office or the Trinity Treasures office as the date draws nearer. Please mark your calendar and make plans to attend! Enjoy the dinner, social time with other parents of young children, and of course the opportunity to learn! By TyAnn Drake What an amazing thing to ring in the New Year is sure to bring blessings and challenges for many of us and we will face them together. One of the blessings is the support to Trinity in the way of general giving to the budget. I want to personally thank all who contribute to the family budget. I know many have responded in prayer to help meet the needs. As I look around I m excited to see how God will use each and everyone of you in the life of the church. You may have given countless hours of service, prayed with someone, helped in a mission of the church or given a warm hug. No gift given in love is ever too small. Blessings to All of you. Page 3

4 MISSION SCHOLARSHIPS Each year a Trinity Presbyterian College of Idaho Scholarship is made available through the Paul and Eleanor Tate Endowment Fund, and a Trinity Presbyterian Whitworth Scholarship is made available through the Catherine McSween Hill Trinity Presbyterian Whitworth College Matching Scholarship Fund. Who may apply? Students who are members of Trinity or whose families are Trinity related will receive first preference. If no one from Trinity applies, students from other Presbyterian Churches in Boise Presbytery or Synod of the Pacific may be considered. Students, Christian or non Christian, graduate or undergraduates are considered in the following order: 1st: students who are members of Trinity Presbyterian Church 2nd: students who are active at Trinity, but not members 3rd: students who are not active at Trinity, but whose parents or guardians are members 4th: students who are not active at Trinity, but whose parents or guardians are active, but not members Income levels are not used to decide who will receive the scholarship. The scholarship is intended to encourage students related to Trinity Presbyterian Church and/or Boise Presbytery to consider a Christian liberal arts college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. The application procedures and application forms can be obtained by contacting Barbara Campbell at or by e mail at BC821@msn.com. Deadline for applying for both of these scholarships for the academic year is April 15 th, Selection of the scholarship recipients will be May 15 th DAY WOMEN S RETREAT By Margaret Mitchell Esther Chosen for Such a Time as This Have you ever thought about attending Women s Retreat but have been unable to attend for a full weekend? This year the Women s Retreat Team has decided that they will repeat this year only the subject that was taught at last Women s Retreat in October. The Women s Seminar will be held Saturday, March 6th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church in room 7. The cost of the Seminar will be $20.00 which includes lunch and snacks. Child care will be provided. Registration will be February 7th, 14th, 21st & 28th in the Church commons area following services. Come join the women of Trinity and see what kind of subjects are taught at our Annual Women s Retreat which are held the 3rd weekend of September. You don t need to be a member of Trinity to attend, so invite your friends to join you at the seminar! FROM THE LIBRARY By Connie Hoselton The newest selection available in the Trinity Library is a recommendation by Pastor Joe, The Blue P ar a k eet b y Sc o t McNight. What if I am too conservative to be liberal and too liberal to be conservative? Until Scott McNight wrote The Blue Parakeet today s Christian had little choice; either side with out of touch fundamentalists or unrealistic liberals; which left millions in the middle disenfranchised and unsure how to read the Bible in a postmodern world. In this bold, engaging reexamination of reading the Bible, author Scot McNight proclaims a new Third Way, one that walks confidently between the two extremes. Page 4

5 YOUTH SPOTLIGHT: ALLYSON SANDER Allyson Sander is the youngest of three children. She is a junior at the Idaho Arts Charter School in Nampa. Although she has taken choir and dance, her area of focus is art & drama. Last year she earned her letter in art and is again a current member of the schools Key Club and Honor Society. When she was younger, Allyson attended Trinity Treasures and participated in several of the youth Church plays and summer Bible camps. Last spring she attended a new members class and was then later baptized. She has enjoyed participating in the churches youth group activities. Following her passion for the arts Allyson, for the last three years, has auditioned with Music Theater of Idaho. She has had parts in Oliver and recently held three ensemble parts in Annie and is looking forward to acting in Willy Wonka in April and in Jekyll & Hyde next Fall. Allyson is an active member of the 4 H club where she has completed such projects as costume sewing, quilting, candy & jewelry making, & photography as well as attending & volunteering each year at several summer day camps. As a group they have also volunteered &/ or contributed at a local church food bank, the Ronald McDonald House & Habitat for Humanity. She has won several 4 H awards for photography and some of her photos hung up in the Idaho Congressional offices in Washington D.C. Allyson is always full of energy and enjoys spending time reading or working on one of her many projects. She is exploring colleges and may even focus on a degree in theater arts. YOUTH XWise, Cross Wise is the name of our High School and Junior High Youth Ministry. One of our Core values of ministry is help our Jr. and Sr. Highers grow in their commitment to the work of Christ in the world by expressing compassion to people in need. This value mirrors Trinity s mission statement where we in the name of Jesus seek to give hope by making a tangible difference in our local and global community. We are looking at conducting a Planned Famine, to raise both awareness of world hunger and to raise funds to help relieve hunger both locally and globally. On February 7 th, our Youth are going to be serving meals and performing other ministry opportunities at the River of Life Boise Rescue Mission Homeless Shelter. We will also be continuing in our I Life series, which focuses on building and maintaining healthy relationships and not just of the boy friend/girl friend variety.
