1 Trinity Presbyterian Church 4601 S. Surprise Way, Boise ID PERU MISSION TRIP By Holly Badke The Trinity mission team heading for Lima, Peru is ready, willing, and excited to set out on this great adventure. Because of our Trinity Family, we have this wonderful opportunity and we are thankful and appreciative for the chance to serve. Our team, consisting of Fred and Holly Badke, Leon and Sheila Beeman, Ellie Cook, C.J. Huston, Lori Icenhower, Gail Kirkpatrick, Peter, Carrie and Daniel Kolb, Mary T. MacConnell, Sue Sizoo, and Dick and Natalie Thatcher have been meeting regularly, learning Spanish, and getting the necessary vaccinations. Last month, our Presbyterian missionary host in Peru, Rusty Edmonson, visited Trinity and met with our team. Rusty clued us into some of things we would be doing, and we were able to enjoy a slide presentation of the place where we will be working, some of the challenges we would face, and some of the people we will be working with. Our team will actually be serving at two different sites. One is the St. Mary s school, which is the object of Educate Peru, a mission effort Trinity has supported for several years. The other is a new Presbyterian church located in a poor barrio near the school. Our teams will split up to address three needs of these Peruvians: medical, teaching and construction. These people are very impoverished and in desperate need. Your Trinity missionaries will be leaving Boise November 5 th and returning November 17 th. We would all appreciate your prayers for safety and that God s love will be shared with these folks so far away. Again, the mission team would like to thank all of you for your contributions from bake sales, tea parties, spaghetti feeds, and yard sales which helped to make this mission effort possible.

2 Musings... By Pastor Joe I was reading the other day in Wired Magazine of something called reverse evolution, where you can turn a chicken into a dinosaur. The man behind the idea is Jack Horner who also was the technical consultant behind the movie Jurassic Park. This is a man who looks at a the skeleton of a chicken and says that they are very similar to T. Rex.. Of course, the real question is why would you? Why change a chicken back into a dinosaur? There are those who do prefer the past to the present. Judging from Jurassic Park, I am not sure the good old were all that good. Why change a chicken back into a dinosaur? Simply because you can do something doesn t mean you have to do it, or even should do it. There are some things better left undone, for many reasons. Unfortunately, in the realms of science and technology we re run so far out ahead, our ethics haven t caught up, and it doesn t look like we will take any time to do so, especially if there is a large monetary reward attached- or the potential for huge financial gains. Sometimes No, is the hardest word to say. No one likes boundaries or limits, particularly self-imposed ones. Just because someone is willing to pay big bucks for something doesn t mean we have to build it or supply it. Which caused me to ask, WWJS- What Would Jesus Sell? SUNDAY SCHOOL By Susan Fry Parents, I just wanted to update you on what the children will be doing in Sunday School in November. The big thing is the Operation Christmas Child mission project the Sunday School is doing. I mentioned this in the last In Touch, and we sent additional information home with the children on October 23rd. Please help your child with this project and let them see the true meaning of Christmas. Adults in the congregation are also welcome to participate in this project. All shoe boxes need to be brought to the church by Sunday, November 13. Check out the following website for additional information: and click on the Operation Christmas Child icon. You may also find a handout with a list of suggested items to fill the shoe boxes in the commons area. During the month of November the pre-school group will be studying about Samuel and then about David and his family. The 6-8 year olds will be studying the topics of wisdom, generosity, peacemaker and forgiveness through stories about Isaac, Jacob and Esau. Check out the take-home papers to see what all of the children are studying. The 9-11 year olds are still looking for teachers. If you have a child in the 9-11 year age group, we ask that you consider volunteering one Sunday a month. The material is all laid out for you and it is very easy to teach. You would need an hour or less to get prepared to teach. If we do not get enough volunteers there may be some Sundays that this age group would need to stay in church with their parents. 3 By Kathy Nielsen Please join us for our 6th Annual Christmas tea on Saturday, December 3rd from 1:00-3:00 p.m.! Invite a friend, neighbor, or family member and take a moment to relax during all the holiday rush while enjoying some delicious treats such as: /cheesy quiche, Miss Virginia s Peach & Pecan Dip on Bread Rounds, Holiday cheese puffs, Curry Chicken Wraps, Sour Cream Scones with Devonshire Cream & strawberry jam and desserts such as Spices Snowflakes, High Tea Lemon Cookies, Christmas Shortbread and Fudgy Hazelnut Brownies! All proceeds benefit Trinity s Mission teams Projects. You may sign up individually or as a table of 4-12 people (names included). The cost is 15 per person. Reservations are currently being taken at the Tea Table in the commons area. If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Nielsen at MISSION MOMENTS Trinity s annual food drive to support the Idaho Food Bank continues through December 11th! You ll notice that there are food barrels both in the church commons area and by the entrance to Trinity Treasures. This helps the food bank provide food to the less fortunate members of our community during the holidays. There are more needy families than ever before in the Treasure Valley. IFB provides emergency food more than 119,000 times a month. Of those assisted by IFB network partners 26% are children, 54% adults, and 20% seniors & 206,433 families. You can help them by donating non-perishable food or canned items such as: soup, stew, canned meats, chili, tomato sauce, canned evaporated milk, non fat dry milk, peanut butter & jams. Starches such as cereals, oatmeal, rice, potatoes and pasta are helpful too. Items specific to the holidays such as canned pumpkin, yams or stuffing are good as well. They also would like desserts such as boxed cake or brownie mixes. The food bank will not accept jars of baby food due to its strict requirements about the seals on the jars. You may also make a monetary donation with a check made out the Trinity with Food Bank written in the notation line. Thank you for your willingness to help those in need this holiday season. MISSION TEA RAKE UP BOISE By Barbara Campbell Boise is The City of Trees and the cooler weather means that the many trees will soon be spreading their leaves on our lawns and sidewalks. The Mission Committee and the Youth Group are once again offering to rake leaves for any Trinity families who may need assistance this year. There will be a notice running in the Spark and if you are interested, please call Cheryl Grantham at or by e -mail at cherylgrantham@yahoo.com to sign up and your yard will be added to the list. Last year, the Mission Committee and the Youth Group cleaned and raked up about five yards for members of our congregation and we would like to be able to offer this service again. If you would like to volunteer to help, please join us on Sunday, November 20th, from 1:30-4:30 pm. for our official leaf raking Sunday. Families with children are welcome to volunteer too! Donations of paper leaf recycle bags are welcome. Please mark you link cards if you would like to have your yard raked, would like to volunteer to rake leaves or can donate leaf bags! Page 3

4 By Margaret Mitchell The holidays are quickly approaching and that mean s that it s almost time to decorate the Sanctuary for Christmas! If you are someone who enjoys decorating trees, then this is a great opportunity for you! Join us, Saturday, November 26th at 9:00 a.m.. Many hands make light work, and we needs lots and lots of hands! All are welcome. Coffee, Juice & donuts will be provided. Christmas is also the time of year that have our annual sale of poinsettia plants to decorate our Sanctuary. We will begin the sales on November 20th through December 4th. We will use live plants to decorate the church on Sunday, December 11th for our annual afternoon Christmas program. The plants will be available for pick up any time after the program. You can buy a plant in memory or in honor of a loved one and those names will be listed on a special insert on Christmas Eve. You can also request that your poinsettia be delivered to a specific person, hospital or nursing home. Watch for the order forms in your bulletin. Call Margaret Mitchell at or her at mamitchell75@yahoo.com with any questions. TRINITY TREASURES By Annette Slaybaugh Fall is here, and Trinity Treasures is once again fully engaged in the school year programs for all the children. Two of the continuing favorite activities are the dance program that s taught by Mr. John of The Dance Connection, and Christian Circle with Pastor Joe. During dance the children are learning about movement, concentration and discipline, and JESUS is the focus in Pastor Joe s songs! What a great way to learn! October is the month for the annual, very popular pumpkin carving party that the Dads enjoy with their sons and daughters. And again this year families had the opportunity to participate in the TPC sponsored Trunk or Treat on Sunday October 30 th. November brings the Thanksgiving Feast for parents and children that is scheduled for November 18 th. This event has been a TT tradition for many, many years. As you can see, there is not a dull moment in the lives of our Trinity Treasures children. Our updated and revised web page is almost ready to be launched. You will be able to find it by going first to the church web page at tpcboise.org, or you can go directly to trinitytreasuresboise.org. We are really excited about the smoother integration and shared look that we will now have with TPC s website. We have been working very hard at preparing the TT site for migration to the new site. We know that this new look will provide an even better window into our very special childcare and preschool program with just a click of the mouse! POINSETTIA S AND DECORATING MOMS GROUP By Melissa Hartman The MOMS Group is sponsoring Sandy Spurgeon McDaniel as she offers Stop Feeding Your Dragon! a free parenting seminar for children tots through teens. The seminar is based on Sandy's new book, Don't Feed the Dragon! Wrap yourself in laughter as you learn how to teach your children to mind without threats, bribes, screaming or anger. Stop meltdowns, arguing, fighting, defiant and disrespectful behavior. Get children to do their homework, chores, listen and do something on time. And even to make wise choices. Join us on Sunday, November 13th from 5:30-6:30 at Trinity Presbyterian Church. No charge!! Bring your friends! Dads are welcome too! Childcare will be provided; please RSVP childcare needs (including both # of children and their ages) to tpcboise@qwestoffice.net or Page 4

5 Youth Group will meet on Wednesday nights from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Eastwind. There is always free pizza, fun times, worship, and great Biblical discussions. Come check it out! Mark you calendars for these upcoming events: FUSED YOUTH GROUP YOUTH CALENDAR OF EVENTS By Jesse Fadel On the night of Sunday, October 30th our Fused Youth group led kids through the Haunted room at Trunk-or-Treat event. A team of youth from Eastwind & Trinity teamed up and decorated the Haunted room and helped our neighborhood kids have a scary fun time! On the following night, Halloween, our Fused youth group went door to door in Surprise Valley, not to Trick-or-Treat, but to help stop hunger in Idaho by Take-a-Treating! In a recent study, the Idaho Food Bank concluded that 1 in 10 Idahoans had received some kind of food assistance! This amounts to a huge number in need. If they missed your house on Halloween and still want to donate, please drop off food in either church lobby. On Sunday, November 20th, Trinity s Youth are helping to rake up Trinity s church families yards that need a little extra help this year. Depart from Trinity at 1:30 and return by 4:30. Bring your own rake, yard gloves, etc. Please sign up to help rake via your Link cards or call the church office at Saturday, October 29th PERFECT class for girls begins and will meet for 4 weeks on Saturdays Oct 29, Nov. 5, 12, & 19, 11:30-1:30. Lunch will be provided and it's 45 for the 4 weeks and materials (scholarships available). Girls will get coaching tips, techniques, and Biblical advice on how to deal with the pressures to be perfect. Brochures can be found in the commons area. Sunday, November 20th Rake up Trinity! Trinity s youth are helping to rake up the yards of church families that need a little extra help this year! Winter Camps - Save the Dates! We re heading to McCall, Idaho in January! Jr. High will be going, January 6th - 8th and Sr. High will be going January 20th - 22nd. STEWARDSHIP By TyAnn Drake The pledge drive for the general giving to Trinity s budget is on the move! You may have received a pledge drive letter and pledge card in the mail recently. If you did not, you can find pledge cards in the commons area by the giving box. You may either return your pledge card in the offering plate, in the giving box in the commons area or by U.S. Mail. Our continuous goal is to continue to keep Trinity in the black each and every month to meet the budget that Trinity s Session sets forth based on their giving response. To God be the glory for all He has and does do in the life of Trinity! Page 5
