1 Trinity Presbyterian Church 4601 S. Surprise Way, Boise ID EVERYTHING GLORI By Kerry Calverley As the Christmas Season is quickly approaching, please make room in your schedule to attend a very special musical presentation by the Trinity Presbyterian musical department! Come see Everything Glorious on Sunday, December 13th at 3:00 p.m.. As mid December hits, it gets hectic rushing around, trying to get everything done before the 25th. Slow down for awhile. Come and hear an amazing message conveyed through music, as we again learn how this newborn baby touches our lives and that we always have a place to come home to through Jesus. Featured is our Praise Band, our Christmas Season Sanctuary Choir, Tom Rasmussen on Saxophone, Voice For Life Children s choir, and perhaps a couple of other surprises! There will be a reception following with some wonderful Christmas cookies and fellowship to make the afternoon complete. 2 Musings... By Pastor Joe I had a conversion experience. There once was a time when I was not following Jesus and then I did, and thankfully I think I still am. For me it was a night and day, dramatic and traumatic turning. The trauma though welcomed came because like most people change from one lifestyle to another is not always easy, and sometimes a little more than uncomfortable. I have also met a large number of people who decision to follow Jesus was not as dramatic or traumatic, but it was a conversion none the less. Scot McKnight talks about conversion as a process of identity formation in which a person comes to see him or herself in accordance with Gospel of Jesus. Someone else has added that conversion is the process of reorienting and reshaping your life around God s story and the lordship of Jesus. I like that one. Reorientation, redirection, reshaping, denotes shifting our identity from all sorts of self interest, achievement, income, titles, family and a whole host of other things to become who we were created to become from the beginning. It is the prodigal son returning home, and his older brother deciding not to pout and to come in and join the party. Christmas is about conversion and coming home. BOOK REVIEW By Pastor Joe The word Emergent or Emergence has become worn out in some religious circles, while in others it still evokes blank stares. Some talk about Christianity being in crisis, particularly in the European and North American expressions of the faith. The crisis or changes in the faith are not along the classic liberal or conservative, traditional or contemporary lines. According to Phyllis Tickle in her book, The Great Emergence, there is more going on. Phyllis quotes the Right Reverand Mark Dyer, an Anglican Bishop who observed that about every five hundred years the Church feels compelled to hold a giant rummage sale, and he goes on to say that we are in one of those periods now. I have read a large number of emergent materials and I confess to finding excitement and encouragement in some of its expressions. Phyllis has done a wonderful job of exploring the rummage sales the faith has gone through over the past two thousand plus years, and summarizing what it is going through now, and where it is heading. I believe this book is helpful in contextualizing ministry discussions as well as experiencing what seems to be the fresh wind of the Spirit among the people of God. It is worth the read to more than the curious ADVENT SERMON SERIES: November 29th Come Home To God s Embrace John 4:1 18 December 6th Come Home To God s Light John 1:1 10; 9:5 Isaiah 9:2; 42:6 December 13th Come Home To God s Supply John 6:26 33; 35; 41; 48 Isaiah 55:2 December 20th Come Home To God s Kingdom Matthew 22:2 14 December 24th Come Home To God s Salvation Luke 2:1 24 Page 2

AFTER CHURCH BRUNCHES! By Erma Hultman Here at Trinity, we are committed to create a culture of invitation within Trinity. We continue to implement this strategy to build bridges to the community by creating opportunities to invite a friend, neighbor or relative to participate. A fun new fellowship idea for those of you would like to get to know each other better or to just spend some more time with other Trinity folks is an Advent After church brunch(es) following both services. This is a very informal group, all you need to do is to gather in the commons area near the church office about 10 minutes following the end of the service (s). When there is a group, just decide where you d all like to go and eat! There is no host and sometimes the groups may be big and sometimes small but the friendships formed will be lasting! Questions? Contact Fellowship Elder, Erma Hultman at POINSETTIAS DOROCIAK HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE You are invited to Pastor Joe s & Nancy Dorociak s annual open house on Sunday, December 20th at their home located at 2155 Ridgepoint Way in Warm Springs Mesa (maps available in church office) anytime between 5:00 8:00 p.m.. Come wish one another Merry Christmas and bring a dozen cookies to share. All extra cookies will be given to the Boise Rescue Mission. It s our annual sale of poinsettia plants to decorate our Sanctuary. They are available to purchase through December 6th. We will use live plants to decorate the Church on Sunday, December 13th and plants will be available for pick up after the music program in the afternoon. You can also mark your order form as Deacons choice and the Deacons will deliver them to area hospitals, nursing homes, or other people in their district who need a little Christmas cheer! Watch for the order forms in your bulletin. Call LeAnn South at or e mail her at LeAnnSouth@cableone.net with any questions. Page 3

5 YOUTH SPOTLIGHT: LEE BRININGER Lee is a junior at Timberline High School. He has attended Trinity for almost five years after moving to Boise from Mtn. Home. He is active in many of the youth activities, participating in the youth service days and two of the mission trips. Lee has always been willing to participate in activities that reach out to others from volunteering at a nursing home, to chairing a committee with his brother for relay for life. He is often called to help out neighbors and is always willing to help. Lee has acquired many skills having actively participated along side his family in much of the building of his house in Mayfield. Lee participates in many sports. He plays baseball, skis on his high school s ski team, water skis, wake boards, white water rafts, rides his dirt bike, and loves to travel. The family tries to go on at least one adventure per year! They spent some time this past summer scuba diving with sharks in the Bahamas! Lee loves to take on a challenge and has yet to find one he is not willing to try from Rock climbing, to climbing the highest tree his mother s heart can take. The next adventure he wants to take is hanggliding off Bald Mountain. That excitement in life carries over to his future carrier goals. He maintains a high GPA in school and has begun looking at Colleges this year, hoping to major in science and engineering so that he can work with NASA. He would also like to obtain his pilots license while in college. He plans to narrow down his choice of College this summer and spend his senior year with his friends and hopes to take a trip to Europe with his family and meet his goal of sleeping in a castle. By Nancie Brininger YOUTH By Pastor Joe For the past month we have been examining the topic God s Extreme Makeover. It is a look at the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians chapter five. Studying the scripture is part of our Jr. and Sr. High youth ministry philosophy of growing in our commitment to the person of Christ. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control, are Christ like qualities we are trying to build into our students, and adults leadership as well. Another emphasis of our Jr. and Sr. High youth Ministry is to grow in our commitment to the work of Christ in the world. That work involves evangelism as well as acts of compassion. This past Sunday our Youth, together with members of the Mission committee, put hands and feet to God s love by raking leaves and cleaning up some yards of our members who are not quite able to do it themselves. Jesus once said that true greatness is found in serving others. Our Jr. and Sr. Highers were great this week. YOUTH CALENDAR OF EVENTS Sunday, December 6th, 5 6:30 pm Youth Group Meeting Christmas Party! Bring a gift under $5 (White elephant?!) for a gift exchange game! Sunday, December 13th, 5 6:30 pm Youth Group Meeting Topic: Fight Or Flight (facing fear) Sunday, December 20th, 5 8:00 p.m. Bring your family to the Dorociak Open House!
