Mark 12: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. 31 The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these. 6 As you read this Punawai, I am walking where Our Lord Jesus walked. This is my first time in the Holy Lands absorbing the sights, sounds and culture that Our Lord lived. I ve looked forward with great anticipation to being in all the places I ve heard and read about for the last 50 years. I know this trip will somehow affect my faith and give me a greater appreciation for the men and women of the Bible. However, our faith wouldn t be any less vibrant if we never visited the Holy Lands. Jesus isn t just in Israel. We can talk to Him in Italy, Hong Kong and Hawai i at the same time, in the language of these countries and He responds likewise. We don t need to visit Calvary to confirm He died or visit the tomb to know He has risen or stand on the Mount of Olives to know He ascended to heaven. By faith we affirm these things and live our lives loving and serving our Lord. So why am I here and why am I inviting you to join me next year to visit the Holy Lands? Maybe it s because, as human beings, we are visual and physical. We cannot deny who we are, what moves us and what affects us positively. There is something about being in the approximate place where Jesus was born, where he taught, where he lived, where he healed, where he walked on water, where he was baptized, where he prayed, where he carried his cross, where he was crucified and where he was resurrected. There is something mysterious, wonderful and inspiring about being where he was. For those who have been there already, you know what I m talking about. For those who may be thinking about going next year, hopefully I ll come back with stories, experiences and details that will encourage you to visit the land where our faith began. Until then, continue to pray for me as I do for you. Blessings, Kahu Curt ~ Mission Statement ~ Kawaiaha o Church honors and affirms Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Through God s word expressed through worship, education, and mission, we will equip God s disciples unto faithfulness and fruitfulness. We will clearly represent Jesus Christ to others and perpetuate our Hawaiian cultural heritage. Adopted April 2007

Aloha Kākou MPC Update: Retrospective On The MPC Building-Part 2 Last month, we highlighted some of the features of the new Multi Purpose Center building. We looked at the Church offices, the classrooms, the nursery, conference rooms, archives, the storage area, wheelchair access, and the invisible bridge. There are many more exciting components of the MPC that will allow us to fulfill the goals of our missions at Kawaiaha o. Now, let s continue our journey and look at the remaining features of the building. Library, Reading Room and Mini-Museum On the first floor, near where the old Admin office was, there will be a church library and reading room. There will be tables and chairs for reading and researching the collection of books kept there. Audiovisual equipment will allow users to view or listen to CD s and DVD s. The furniture will be mainly library-like, however, there will also be sitting areas where reading can be done in a more relaxed manner. Some ministries and small groups will find this room a convenient place to hold their meetings. The reading area is also expected to have a wall mounted computer monitor showing the current performance of the BIPV (photo-voltaic) system. You ll be able to see exactly how much electricity is being generated by the BIPV, thus, lowering the church s electric bill. The library will also house a mini-museum displaying the history of Kawaiaha o Church and her many accomplishments. We look forward to the help and cooperation of church members to design and furnish the museum. Social Hall and Kitchen The new social hall will be slightly larger than the old Likeke Hall. Its dimensions are approximately 50 x 100. Instead of the Diamond Head side, the stage will be on the Ewa end of the hall. There will be stage lighting plus a drop down projection screen. The room will be audio-visual equipped and a projector will be permanently suspended from the center of the ceiling. Stage and sound controls are at the mauka rear wall, as well as in one of the rooms next to the stage. The floor of the social hall will be covered with ceramic tile. The new kitchen will be well equipped; however, its projected cost has been grossly exaggerated by recent news reports. Prep tables are located in the center of the kitchen and updated cooking equipment are at the makai wall. Included are a four burner gas range, a griddle, a grille for barbequing, a tilting braising pan, a 60 gallon kettle and a convection steamer. Connected to the walk-in refrigerator is a walk-in freezer. Next to the dry storage room, there will be a dish washing station. On the mauka wall of the kitchen is the beverage station where the ice machine, coffee brewer and juice dispenser are located. Deacons Room and Time Capsule At the Mauka Diamond Head corner of the first floor is the Deacons Room. Here is where the deacons will store their robes and other belongings while they tend to the religious needs of the church. Hidden in one corner of the room will be a sealed time capsule containing articles and memorabilia covering the construction of the Multi-Purpose Center and other stories. Built-in Photo Voltaic System An electricity producing photo-voltaic system will be installed in the makai and Diamond Head roof of the MPC structure. The BIPV panels will actually be built into the roof, replacing some of the roofing tiles. The system is expected to provide approximately one-half of the electricity needed to operate the MPC. Life span of the BIPV is estimated to be 50 to 80 years. Air Conditioning Chiller Unit The chiller for the air conditioning system of the MPC building can be found behind the Diamond Head wall. The system can be programmed to cool specific areas without cooling the entire building. Timers can be set to activate and deactivate the system allowing for efficient building operation. Air blowers for cool air distribution are located in the attic of the building. Working windows and doors allow natural ventilation to be used instead of A/C. A heat recovery system at the chiller captures some of the heat from the exhaust to provide pre-heating for the MPC s hot water tank. Don Caindec Miscellaneous Features There are two additional rooms on the second floor that are of interest to all. Just outside the middle elevator, there will be a small pantry room to be used for items coming from or going to the main kitchen downstairs. This room is useful for holding food prepared in the kitchen and transported upstairs for special events on the second floor. There is also a lunch room on the second floor, between the Pauahi Conference Room and the Children s Nursery. Employees will no longer need to eat their lunch at their desk or in the office area. The lunch room will also have a pass-through counter where food can be passed into the Conference Room without disturbing participants at a meeting. Excess supplies from the kitchen can also be stored here. Current Status of MPC Project As you are aware, work on the MPC project is still on hold pending a permit from the Department of Health. Meanwhile, there are two lawsuits that have been filed and in both cases all the parties have agreed to mediation. We have always promoted resolving our issues outside the courtroom as being more consistent and appropriate with both Christian and Hawaiian values. We ask your prayers and blessings upon all those involved in the mediation. Mahalo for keeping us in your prayers.

Scholarship Recipients Share Their Stories Puanani Caindec A new article will be featured in the Punawai beginning next month, December Imi Na auao will highlight articles written by Kawaiaha o s own scholarship recipients who have benefitted from the generous contributions of past donors. There are eleven (11) sub funds. Many carrying the name of the donor, which comprise the principal scholarship fund. This account has been established as an endowment in which only the income or interest is used to provide scholarships. A strict policy and grading system is in place to ensure that all students requesting financial aid are treated fairly. Students who are members and children or grandchildren of members, are given preference over non-members of Kawaiaha o. Scholastic and community achievement and involvement, and service to Kawaiaha o Church, are also taken into consideration in making awards. Kawaiaha o is truly grateful for the many donors to the scholarship fund and are thankful to Ke Akua for guiding the committee in their decisions and actions. This past September saw sixteen (16) recipients awarded over $7,000 at our worship service in July. If they maintain an acceptable grade point average, an additional $7,000 will be awarded in the spring. If you have any questions on how you can become a donor, or if you would like to serve on the scholarship committee, please contact the Business Office or speak to Kaipo Kanahele, Chair of the Scholarship Committee. Mahalo for your support. Christmas Shoebox Change a child s world with a gift of love. Just imagine a simple shoebox filled with gifts that will bring immeasurable joy to a child in need. It's not hard to visualize the looks on the faces of the children as they open their boxes and see their eyes light up as they explore the prizes inside their Christmas Shoebox! William Haole III Christmas Shoeboxes are so easy and inexpensive that everyone can take part in this project and that it has such a great impact on the children of impoverished, war torn and disaster stricken countries The program is very simple and the Outreach Committee of Kawaiaha o Church invites all members to become involved in this year's Christmas Shoebox Program. It's simple, it s time sensitive so please follow the easy steps below: 1. Decide on an age group: Toddlers: 1 7 years old; Youngsters 8-12; Teens years old; 2. Decide whether you ve chosen a girl or a boy 3. Find an old shoe box and fill the shoe box up with toys, crayons, pens, jacks, marbles, (but no edible items) 4. Wrap with Christmas Paper and Tag it (Girl or Boy & Age Group) 5. Bring to Church on Sunday, November 15 or 22. By partnering with the Outreach Committee in this simple ministry you will be taking the love of Jesus in a very tangible way to a child.

Long before he was officially ordained at Kawaiaha o Church, Leopold Pu unoni Waia u and his family members and friends knew that he would actively seek to serve the Lord as a Christian pastor in Hawai i. Arriving at that place and time was a long journey with many interruptions and delays, but he always persisted and never gave up his dream. Prior to his graduation from the Kamehameha School for Boys in 1940, he chose Oregon State College in Corvallis, Oregon, to begin his college studies. Everything was progressing well for him until December 7, 1941, when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Deeply concerned about his family s location and status on Kaua i, he decided to enlist in the military service as a means of finding out the situation of his parents. He joined the Construction Battalion of the Naval service, also known as the Sea Bees. At that time, he was one of the youngest recruits of the Naval unit. Unfortunately this enlistment took him four years, by way of Quantico, Virginia and to the South Pacific region (Guadalcanal area). He asked to briefly see his parents in Hawai i before he left and then to be transported back with his unit to the mainland. Eventually his Sea Bee unit was disbanded and he was discharged from military service near the end of World War II. He returned to Oregon State to resume his studies. He decided to return to Kaua i for Christmas to visit his parents, only to find his father very ill. With the passing of his father, Henry W. Waia u, he put his education on hold and went to work for the Kaua i Territorial County Engineer Highway Division to help provide for this family s livelihood. While working for Kahu Hope Leopold Pu unoni Waia u Dr. Haweaokalani Waia u, Ed D the Kaua i County, he constantly was engaged in youth work and in church activities, never losing sight of his dream. In November of 1950, the Territorial Christian Endeavor Youth Society, at the invitation of the Haili Church C.E. youth group, had a conference during the Thanksgiving holiday in Hilo. The leaders of this lay group of twelve people at Haili Church, who at this time did not have a pastor, boldly sponsored this conference. Tuck Wah Lee was the leader of this small group. There at this gathering, Leopold met Hawea Brown, a teacher at Hilo High School, who was on of Haili Church s workers. As a result of that meeting, Hawea was invited to visit Leopold s family on Kaua i during the Christmas holidays; he proposed to her, and immediately made plans to return to college on the mainland. They were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Omak, Washington in August, Once more he resumed his studies, this time at Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington and graduated there in May, He and his family moved to San Anselmo, California to continue his education at the San Francisco Theological Seminary where he completed his Masters of Divinity degree in May, From 1939 through 1957, Leopold developed a multitude of work experiences in Hawai i and on the mainland that reinforced his commitment to the working man s Christian life and understanding. His experience at Dutch Schumann Carriage Automotive Company, as part of Kamehameha Boys School Lower Eleven program, was a valuable first-work experience for him. Then followed his summer work on the North Pacific Railway Company as engineer inspector and maintenance supervision for the railway in Idaho and Washington. Previously he had been a worker for an Oregon Transport and Moving Company in Corvallis, Oregon. He also worked for the Marin County Public Schools as a night custodian at the Fairfax Elementary School for three years. Finally his extensive experience included his work as Choir Director at five churches. The three most important of these were the First Baptist Church in Spokane, Washington (two years); the San Rafael Congregational Church in San Rafael, California (two years); and the San Quentin Prison Garden Chapel in San Quentin, California (six months). This last experience at San Quentin was one of the most challenging and spiritually invigorating blessings of his life and left him with a deep concern for all prisoners. Leopold and his family returned to Hawai i in August, 1957 at which time he met Rev. Abraham Akaka. In late August 1957, Kahu Akaka asked him to work at Kawaiaha o Church. doing a variety of assignments. While there he also worked on preparing to meet with the O ahu Ecclesiastical Council for an examination of his educational and theological credentials and his Faith statements. This examination took place at Kawaiaha o Church in November Meanwhile he continued his work and weekly visits to O ahu Prison facility After he passed his Ecclesiastical Council s examination, Rev. Akaka asked the membership of Kawaiaha o Church on December 8, 1957 to ordain Leopold Waia u. Soon after his ordination service, Rev. Akaka again asked the membership of Kawaiaha o Church to have Leopold serve as an Associate Pastor at the church. This calling was the first created position ever established at this historic church or at any Hawaiian church in the territory. This was the beginning of the concept of an Associate Pastor or Kahu Hope in Hawai i. Leopold s familial, educational and spiritual platter was full and his hopes and dreams had finally become a reality. He immediately went to work as a

Christian Education leader and worker, primarily caring for the Sunday School, working with other ministries and activities of Kawaiaha o, including attending church conferences and functions such as the Christian Endeavor meetings and Apana (suburban chapel) gatherings. He also attended some community events for Kawaiaha o and provided help with small Hawaiian churches who did not have regular pastors. Throughout his marriage, Leopold and Hawea were a team together. In the spring of 1958, Leopold was confronted with a problem that persisted even when he was relatively comfortable with his position at Kawaiaha o Church. The members of Kahikuonālani Church of Ewa had asked him to become a pastor of their church since they had not had a regular minister for over 25 years. The visible options between the two churches were dramatically transparent. With Kawaiaha o Church, there was a large, loving and established membership with a historical church building and a campus that possessed accompanying structures to care for its people, programs, and its ministries. The church also had adequate means to provide for the financial affairs of the church. In brief, Kawaiaha o Church had the personnel and resources to enjoy a vital and comfortable (cont.) Kahu Hope Leopold Pu unoni Waia u ministry in Honolulu. By comparison, Kahikuonālani Church had a very small membership with no church building. It had not had a regular pastor for over 25 years. It was unwilling to end its worship at the church. Kahikuonālani Church only offered a house, some furnishings, and a small salary for its pastor, but a huge hope and desire of its small membership to work hard together to resurrect its church and its witness in the Pearl City area. Prayers and discussions between Rev. Akaka, Kawaiaha o Church, members of Kahikuonālani Church and Leopold and Hawea took place. Everyone was aware that this would be a difficult decision to make. In prayer, the call was made Not my will, but Thy will be done. Therefore, the Waia u ohana decided to move to Pearl City. It meant that Leopold would have to begin in a hole. He would have to secure a small one-story plantation building to convert it into a temporary church worship center. He had to gather its small membership into a working operating unit with deacons, Sunday School, a youth group, church singers, musicians, and/or a possible choir, a pianist with a piano, carpenters, painters, planters, workers of all sorts, and people willing to work at the church site and to attend the church services. It also meant that Hawea would have to return to being a teacher at Women of Kawaiaha o Holiday Luncheon Come join us in a delicious holiday meal, fellowship, caroling, grab bag exchange, and games! Waipahu High School to help with the family s living expenses. However this venture excited the Waia u family because of the great faith of this small church to risk all of its resources, physical and spiritual, to make God s presence known. Amazingly the Ewa church quickly sprung to life. The small church had a growing youth group and also an adult group that made a canvas of the Pearl City Highlands area to conduct a church survey of prospective members of their future church site. The Pearl City church also conducted regular services for the military personnel at the peninsular military area. The church celebrated its existence and growth in the Fall of 1958 with a special service and a lū au at its Peal City worship center. The Kawaiaha o Church choir members were special guests at the celebration and participated in its festivities. Without the presence of Leopold s position as an Associate Pastor, Rev. Akaka continued to search for a replacement for another Kahu Hope for Kawaiaha o Church. It took many months before he found Rev. Tuck Wah Lee to fill that position. Before Rev. Lee was hired, a tragic accident occurred on the old Pali Road on March 13, A drunk driver crashed into Rev. Leopold Waia u s car, killed him and hospitalized his three young sons and his pregnant wife. Even though this was a terrible tragedy, Kahikuonālani Church has continued to exist with its ministry in the Pearl City Highlands area and the existence of Kawaiaha o Church s Kahu Hope continues to fulfill its mission at this historic church. All praise and glory for these continuing ministries belong to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. 6 La Pa ani The Kalihi and Moanalua Church, Lili uokalani Protestant Church, Kaumakapili Church, Ka Hana O Ke Akua Church and Kawaiaha o Church jointly in cooperation with the O ahu Sunday School Association cordially invited the whole family to this year s LĀ PĀ ANI. It was held on Saturday, September 19, 2009 on the church grounds of Lili uokalani Protestant Church in Hale iwa. This year s theme was called Spread the Power of Love. This event was filled with Fellowship, Friendship, Hawaiian games, Arts & Crafts, Lei making Baibala workshop, Children s activities and Great Food. The Kawaiaha o Christian Education Ministry had a Keiki Corner booth set up for this event. Our booth shared activities such as coloring books with crayons, children s games, toys, stickers and making name tags. I was told by some of our Sunday School Teachers who attended, Corrie Young, Anela Robinson, Sandi Abdelahad, Leann Crabbe and Sophie Adversalo, that not only the Keiki s stopped by but the kūpuna used our booth as a REST STOP. An elderly woman from Washington, D.C. mentioned she like to learn new things. She enjoyed the fellowship that our teachers had shared with her. In all, we praise God and thank him for allowing us to have a beautiful day of fellowship. Leona-Clare Kakalia Scripture: For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. (2Timothy 1:6-7) Dress A Girl Around the World Many times we want to reach and help children around the world but we just don t know how to execute it. Project Pillowcase provides a great opportunity to use our talent and abilities that God instilled in us. Jayneen Leong Just imagine a world where every girl owned at least one dress, especially if it were made by you. -Hope 4 Women International Hope 4 Women International is a division of Hope 4 Kids International, which is an organization that has been carrying hope around the world for 36 years. Hope 4 Women International has been collecting pillowcases for Uganda where they teach the women to make dresses for the less fortunate girls in their community. Kawaiaha o Church School will be working together with HMSA in Project Pillowcase by collecting pillowcases, adding embellishments, as well as pockets for Prayer Dolls. Adding the Prayer Doll is a wonderful way to send a prayer and blessing for the little girl who ll be receiving the dress that you helped to create. Don t get discouraged if sewing isn t your skill, because there are many other ways for you to add your idea and incorporate your certain talent. We will collect pillowcases through the month of November and begin sewing our dresses in December. If you would like to join Kawaiaha o Church School and HMSA in collecting pillowcases in your community or place of business, or would like to join our sewing group, please call ext. 15. Let s dress one little girl at a time on the other side of the world and let her know that Jesus loves her.
