1 Together We Are The Church June 2018 Christ Lutheran Ch urch Newsletter Aloha Kakou, I would like to report out regarding the Synod Assembly in Palm Desert, May It was a two-day assembly this year, something new, and it went very well. We were in and out in short order. Mahalo nui loa for keeping me and our assembly delegates, Joel and Anna Hamaguchi, in your prayers as we sat together with other Lutheran Christians, talked story, reflected, prayed, voted. There was nothing terribly tense or controversial this year and when differences did arise, delegates spoke with respect and consideration. Now, we move into Ordinary Time, the Green season of the Church, the time of teaching, Sabbath rest and reflection. I hope our worship together on Sundays and other days will mirror that time of spiritual growth. We have finished up the Narrative Lectionary s trip through the Gospel of John, something I hope you have appreciated, enjoyed and learned from. I certainly found it worthwhile for my own study and preaching. We will continue to have Gospel readings from John, not quite as long though, because after I am back from vacation in late June, I m going to indulge in a six-week sermon series on the Psalms. I ll begin the last week of June and run through the five weeks of July. I have not done a sermon series decades, so I am looking forward to trying this out with you. Please, let me know how it may (or may not) be helpful for you. That s about it from my end of things. While traveling, I ll be visiting family and friends and attending a conference on one of my favorite topics, complexity and responsive human relating within organizations. (I promise not to bore you too much with that in my sermons, but watch out otherwise!) Blessings as we move into summer,

You will also find a link to our synod YouTube channel, which contains video recordings of all of the assembly business sessions and speakers. We are working to create an album of all of the photos taken during our assembly by our volunteer photographers - Paul Coulter, Chris Bach and Brenda Barrios. VBS 2018 Lutheran Church of Honolulu & St. John Lutheran Church are hosting Vacation Bible School at St. John Lutheran Church, 1004 Kailua Road, Kailua, on Tuesday June 12 Sunday June 16, for kids entering Kindergarten-6th grade in the fall, led by awesome counselors from Lutheran Retreat, Camps & Conferences. Cost is $100 for the week from 9 a.m. 3 p.m. Or $150 for extended hours 8 a.m. 5:30 p.m. If you are interested, please call the church office at Lutheran Church of Honolulu at Volunteers Needed Looking for volunteers for full or half days Need a car for the counselors to use while they are on island Provide snacks for counselors and kids Provide lunches for counselors Help make memories for life! 4

Thanks to you, our donations are growing, unfortunately so is our "need to repair" list. We have made a dent and are now working on office windows, new water heaters, wood rot repair & painting. If you'd like to help monetarily to the Building Fund, please note this designation with your donation so that it will be distributed to this cause. 5
