4 How to Have a Quiet Time: We are so thrilled you are taking this journey through the scriptures with us. Often when we start a new reading plan we do so with great enthusiasm and about a month or two in we get knocked off the plan and find ourselves too far behind to even catch up, and then we give up. As a result we have made the readings fairly short but if you stick with it you will be able to read through the Bible in 2 years. As well we have included a couple of catch up days each month so if you fall behind you can use those days to catch up. If you get too far behind to even do that just grab the plan and jump back in on that date...we are a grace church, so condemnation here! Tools needed: You will need a few tools for your journey, not many, but you will find them very helpful to get the most out of this. A Bible. Make sure you have a readable translation. You can speak with one of the pastors for a recommendation. A Journal. You can use either a journal app on itunes or the play store or have one with an actual pen, which ever works best for you. Pen and Highlighter. The pen is for writing in your journal and the highlighter is for your bible, yes you can mark up your bible, I think Jesus would want us to interact with it. A quiet place. Make sure you have a place that will be free from distractions so you can focus, some like a coffee shop, or if you are like me the couch in the early morning with a good cup of coffee! The Process Start with prayer, before you do anything stop and just ask the Holy Spirit to lead you, teach you, speak to you, make the scripture fresh or whatever else you might need that day. Jesus said in John 14:26 that he would send the Holy Spirit to teach us, so let s invite Him to do that each time. Next open the bible and read the passage, this shouldn t take longer than 10 minutes. I want to encourage you though not just to read, or skim, but read looking to see what God would want to say to you that day. Who is it speaking to? What? What is it trying to tell the intended reader? What could it mean in that culture? Why? Why would this be important for them to know? Why would this be important for me to know? Where? Where is this taking place, in the dessert? In captivity? In peace time? In a foreign land or in their home land? Could their location be relevant? After you have done this pick a verse that spoke to you, or stood out to you and begin to journal about it. The Third part of the process is journaling. I know you may be tempted to skip this part, but I would encourage you to give it a try, maybe even just once a week if you really dislike it. How do we journal? There are different types of journaling but for us we are going to focus on journaling for spiritual growth. If you follow a simple acronym that I learned a long time ago from a pastor in Hawaii named Wayne Cardiero, you should be able to fill a page with very little effort. The Acronym is S.O.A.P. So grab your pen and start writing S - Scripture. What was the scripture that God spoke to you about? Write it out. O - Observations. What did you observe about this scripture? What was going on? Why was it written? What significant events are going on around this passage? A - Application. How are you going to apply this scripture today? What will it look like to live out what God spoke to you about? P. - Prayer. Ask the Lord to help you live this out, to take steps to actually do what He has spoken to you about. The fourth and final part is prayer. You can add in your journal prayer to this part if you like. There are many ways to pray and if you have a good one stick with it. If you don t I would encourage you to start with model. The reason we encourage this is because often what can happen is that our prayers often devolve into long lists of stuff that May 27 Josh 8; Psa 124

6 we want God to do and that s it, but God wants to speak to you, encounter you, and change you through prayer. So while there are different models I will give you and easy one and if you want some different ideas speak to one of the pastors and we can give you lots of different options. The one I will give you today has been around for a long time, it is another acronym it is A.C.T.S. It works like this A - Adoration. This is basically worship, and speaking to God who He is, how good He is, how great He is. I like to start by working my way through the alphabet telling God about who He is A - Lord you are the Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end, B - you are beautiful, C - you care for broken people, you care for those that don t have hope, or have it all together, you care for the orphan and the widow, you care for me, D - you get the picture. Do this for a few minutes and it is amazing how you will feel when you begin to declare how good God is, how strong God is, how much God cares, your fears begin to fade and your faith begins to raise! C - Confession. Sometimes we think that this part is just about confessing our sins, and while this about confessing our sins, we can confess other things too. I would first begin by just asking the Holy Spirit to show you if there is anything in your heart that you need to repent of, any hardness of heart toward someone, anything that He would like you to see so you could repent. Next use this time to confess your need of Him. Confess His ability, and your inability, confess your bankruptcy, and His endless supply. Confess where you come up short, and that the Lord can be all you need. S - Supplication. This is where we ask him to meet our needs, to give us our daily bread, to pray for others. I would encourage you to write these things down, so later you can look back and see how great He is and it can give you faith when you are going through a dry season, or a season of doubt. Well there you have it! It isn t hard or complicated. I am fully confident that if you engage the scriptures, if you engage Jesus through prayer that you will grow more then you ever have. He has great plans for you, He desires to use you, to make a difference in your world for His kingdom. God is at work in your world, the trick is to see where He is working and then join Him in what He is doing. As we engage Him through this practice we will see more clearly the hand of God working because we will know Him better! Your journey will encourage others as they see what God is doing in your life. On top of all this you get to experience Christ in a fresh way, and experience His joy and peace that comes from knowing Him. Don t forget to write us often about what God is showing you, or let us know on Sunday how He has been changing you. We are on this journey together! This Bible reading plan is designed to take you through the Old and New Testaments in two years, and through the Psalms and Proverbs four times during that period. This plan is based on the book by Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart, How to Read the Bible Book by Book: A Guided Tour (Zondervan 2002). You will benefit the most if you use this plan together with Fee and Stuart s book. T - Thanks. This is your time to thank God, to thank Him for your health, relationships, your job, your family, etc. Also include how thankful you are for who He is. Thank you that you are my saviour, thank you that you forgave my sin, thank you that you went to the cross for me, thank you loving me, for changing me, on and on we could go.
