Introduction: 100 Days of Prayer Over the next 100 days of prayer it is our hope that you will lean in to God in ways deeper than you have before and experience the presence of God in new and refreshing ways. God not only can be heard, He wants to be heard! Using this journal, learn to pay attention to God s voice; attune to His promptings and act on them; sense His deep care and personal love for you. At First prayer can be summed up in these few words: We believe we re to be a people of prayer, so that everything we do is God directed. This is the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Vaughn Forest Church. Let s begin it well! Let s begin in with a refresh in focus. Let s begin it with 100 Days of Prayer!

Daily Pages Suggestions This is the section of your daily entry where you can write about your day. Journaling is great for reviewing the day to observe where God has been at work; to celebrate where you have obeyed his promptings and participated in His work; where you have observed habits or patterns in your life that you need/desire to curb or flat out repent of. Write these reflections in this section of your journal. You may reserve the next section for either writing a scripture that strikes_ you from your regular reading, your ponderings from the verse supplied or feel free to continue writing your about your life today with scripture prayers intermingled as they come to your mind. Prayerfully reviewing your day is the goal of this journaling experience. In this way you will learn to see where God was active throughout your day; where He was trying to communicate with you or was trying to invite you to join Him in accomplishing His Kingdom work. Reviewing your day will also help you to discover patterns that are keeping you from growing to become a mature person both emotionally, intellectually and spiritually In this last section, if you haven t already, summarize your day with God in the form of a prayer

Life J o u r n al Why Pray? Building Lives that Honor God

Why Pray? Prayer is the means God has ordained by which He will, conform us into the image of His Son, Jesus Christ & accomplish His work on earth (build His Church) The reason we pray is because Jesus model the habit for us, He taught us how to do it and He told us to ask: "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. Matt 7:7 And when we ask, the Lord has told us that we need to have faith. When the Disciples were amazed that Jesus had caused the fig tree to wither He said to them, If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." Matt 21:22 In James 4:2 we are taught (among other things) that (we) do not have, because (we) do not ask God. These few verses give us a glimpse of what the pattern of Scripture confirms: God works through prayer and if we don t pray, we will not likely see the hand of God at work in our life The Purpose of Prayer Q. What is the purpose of prayer? A. To develop and strengthen our walk with God Both the scriptures and the example of Christians, down through the ages, have confirmed that we pray, primary, for what it does in the heart of the pray er. In addition: our prayers are a sweet smelling fragrance rising up into God s presence our Father loves to hear His children s voice prayer keeps us ever humbly aware that that we re in relationship with God

When we walk with someone we talk to them we relate to them. Enoch and Noah walked with God; David and Hezekiah walked before Him The word walk implies that the woman or man of God is actively living responsibly before God; their manner, habits and lifestyle are consistently aimed at honouring Him and when we fall, we simply confess repent and get back up again. It s what we do: we fall down; we get back up again (using instruction given to us in 1 John 1:9) The great purpose of prayer is to walk with God in an intimate relationship. If we walk with the LORD in His name (in step with His character, will & ways) then we will come to know Him. When we know Him we will be able to hear Him. In hearing Him we will be able to join Him in the Kingdom work into which He is inviting us! Always remember, when you think about or talk to God you re thinking about or talking to a person; God who is nearer to you than a close friend. Imagine Him sitting right across from you when you pray. Why do we begin with God? 1. God is more important than getting our needs met. Would you like for the only interaction between you and your children to be when they wanted food, money, toys, etc? God desires something deeper than a relationship of requests 2. He is the God of the universe, the Almighty, eternal One, who gives us life and breath and everything else as well. How incredibly improper to do nothing more in His presence than just ask for things. There must be thanks, honor, and praise to his Name? 3. Beginning with God causes us to see from His viewpoint.

Mary and Martha wanted Jesus to keep Lazarus from dying. Jesus wanted to raise him so that He could demonstrate He is the resurrection and the life. Beginning with God Focus on Him by using what ever creative means you re inclined to: Inspirational reading hearing reflection on Scripture praising testifying singing meditating on the person and work of God What ever it is that you re praying through these days, begin your prayers with praise of God His great name, past and present actions, His character etc. When you pray and make requests think about what the scriptures have told us about God o o Be thinking about o o What, concerning any particular request, are you reminded of that has to do with God s past faithfulness as recorded in scripture? Pray/verbalize that remembrance of faithfulness in your prayer. Can you think of appropriate scriptural truths or promises that you can employ in your prayers? Verbalize that scripture in your prayers. why do I pray the way I m praying? Is there a Biblical warrant or example for why I m praying this way? In other words, do my prayers affirm who God is? What God has done in the past? What the Bible says God does today? Pray scripture! It is the best way to know that you re praying according to God s will and ways (assuming you have properly understood the Scripture text/passage).

A Prayer O LORD, God of wonders beyond our wildest imagination, are you not the God who is in heaven? Who rules over all the earth? Who cares for the birds of the air, the grass of the field and its flowers that are here today and tomorrow thrown into a composting heap or a burn barrel? Of course you are! That s why we are counseled to seek first your kingdom and your righteousness. Having done this we can stand against any foe, real or imagined, knowing that we are your dear children whom you hold close, and guard and protect for the sake of your name. Nothing can harm us; not ultimately. So, Father, here s our privileged burden: we must do the work of God which is none other than to believe in the one He has sent, your Son, Jesus Christ (Jn 6:21)! And in believing we are moved to relating such that we might know Him; and in knowing Him be continually transformed into His image the image of Your Son, Jesus Christ! Father, believing is hard work! Help us in our unbelief! (jn ) Make us effective Servants, Father, that we may accomplish your Kingdom work; only you know what is the real work to be done. With that in mind we bring to you every request and lay it at your feet; for ultimately, outside of what is visible with our own eye and reasonable to the good mind that you have given us,... we do not know what to pray (but you do) and our eyes are upon you. (2 Chron 20:12) Now to you, Father, who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to your great power that is at work within us, to You be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21)
