Every church once a year or more asks people to consider an ongoing gift to the church so that the ministry can continue. When the word stewardship is addressed, people usually think fund-raising. The routine is that letters are sent out, pledge cards or estimate cards or whatever are inside, and people make a commitment for the year. This is usually done over a short period of time designed to be painless and then, unless there is a shortage of funds, the theme of stewardship is dropped except for selected visits for special offerings. The problem with this approach is it cheapens stewardship which is much larger than described. Stewardship is not simply about exchanging money and services. There is nothing done in the church that should be outside of the believer s calling. All we do should enhance who we are. The spiritual component of stewardship is designed to be a gift of inspiration for the giver and a source of hope for the church. Worship Lessons Sometimes we pastors sound like people sitting at the common table of faith and asking for second and third helpings. What this church has given me is a personally inspiring view of people who have a deep desire to follow God. This trait can be seen in giving that over the last eleven years has only been short at the end of the year once. In addition, we have had people of the highest integrity handling the finances and for that we are most fortunate. This church has been generous and has experienced the result of generosity in many ways. Having said thank you for your inspiration to me, I want to focus on considering stewardship as connecting my activity to God s generosity. Basic to following Christ is coming to understand what is needed to have a vibrant relationship with Christ and a sense of meaningful ministry in the world. This spiritual connection is called calling or vocation. It refers to what I do in response to God s calling. Recently I was given advice by a very wise church statesman that the church must never ask people to give based on need. Need can become a demonic weapon of Satan that causes people to think of competing needs. When this is done, the church becomes a place that competes for your funds. Rather, the place where the church shines is to ask what is the Spirit of God telling me about my gift to the fellowship in which I worship? Stewardship is a spiritual question, not an attempt to simply make a budget. We set a (Continued on page 8) November 1 All Saints Day Mark 9:2-13 What is the big deal about transfiguration? 3 Building update Page 3 The Architectural Committee has received a display board of conceptual designs done by our chosen architect, Randy Haverfield. They are exhibited in the narthex for your inspection. This display includes the proposed kitchen/fellowship addition, two new entrances to the building and additional parking and a drive through. There is also a proposed longrange building plan for future build out of our property. Session will be considering whether or not to proceed with fundraising and the building process. Look for more information to be forthcoming. Sally Moore Deacons encourage Meals on Wheels support Want to make a difference? The Canyon County Festival of Trees is an event benefiting the Meals on Wheels program. Organizations design, decorate, and donate trees to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. All of the proceeds from the auction go to the Meals on Wheels program. In the past, the Deacons and members of the church have worked together to donate a tree. This year, in lieu of donating a tree, we will be making a monetary donation directly to the Meals on Wheels program. During the month of November, if you would like to make a difference, simply make a donation and designate Meals on Wheels on your check. The Board of Deacons will match donations made by our congregation up to $450! In addition, all of the offerings made to the Deacon's fund on December 6 will also be donated to this worthy cause. Please prayerfully consider making a donation! Share your hopes and dreams for Christian Education ATTENTION: Just a quick note to let you know that Rona Peterson has resigned her position as Youth Activity Coordinator. We need to do some planning as to the future of our Christian Education program. So come and give your input as to how we should move forward. We hope that you will come and share your hopes and dreams for the future of our children. We would like to get ideas for activities, plan out a calendar of events the possibilities are endless. The meeting is Monday November 9 at 6:30 pm at the church. Childcare will be available. If you have any questions please contact Senita at or you can me at stampinfun@q.com. Senita Watkins Thankful Presbyterians We will celebrate God s love and His blessings with our traditional Thanksgiving dinner following the worship service on Sunday, November 22. Members of the congregation are asked to bring turkey, dressing, pies, or other fixin s. Set-up and clean-up help are also needed. Sign-up sheets are on the table in the back of the sanctuary. For further information talk with Chief Turkey Day Man Bill Dickerson or call him at Presbyterian Men: Mano on Mano November 14 The second Saturday of most months is the Presbyterian Men s Group. It is a small group fellowship of men who share scripture and their lives with one another. All men are welcome. It starts with breakfast at 8:00 am and ends with discussion over scripture. I have so much to do (today) that I should spend the first three hours in prayer. -Martin Luther, The Newsletter Newsletter

Many Pilgrims got sick, and half of them died. What we don t focus on enough is the fact that Native Americans took pity on the Pilgrims. They befriended the newcomers and gave them food. They taught them how to survive the vicious cold months. Then, when the earth grew warm again, the Indians taught the Pilgrims how to grow various crops and how to store any surplus. It was primarily because of the natives friendship and helpfulness that the Pilgrims began to eke their way from disaster to fruitfulness. It s no wonder that when the Pilgrims had their first successful harvest, they invited their Indian neighbors to celebrate with them. The natives didn t come empty-handed. They furnished venison, wild turkeys and probably vegetables from storage. It was, more or less, a potluck affair. The Pilgrim leaders prayed gratefully at the occasion. We can be confident that an unseen but not unexpected Guest was very much present that day. -The Newsletter Newsletter Returning thanks Life-saving was a popular extracurricular activity at Northwestern University during the second half of the 19th century. During four decades, students saved more than 400 people from drowning in Lake Michigan. During a nighttime storm on September 8, 1860, Lady Elgin, a steamboat carrying 393 passengers, was hit by a lumber schooner. The steamboat sank, and 287 people drowned. Northwestern sophomore Edward Spencer swam out to offer aid and ended up rescuing 17 people. Apparently, the ordeal was so stressful that Spencer became delirious and was confined to a wheelchair for life. When he turned 80, Spencer was asked to share his most vivid memory of that tragic day. Not one of the 17 returned to thank me, he replied. This is reminiscent of Jesus miracle in Luke 17: Only one of 10 healed lepers returned to thank Jesus for restoring his physical health. God made a tremendous sacrifice to rescue us. We can return thanks to him each day through our love and grateful obedience. -The Newsletter Newsletter Three kinds of giving There are three kinds of giving: grudge giving, duty giving and thanksgiving. Grudge giving says, I have to ; duty giving says, I ought to ; and thanksgiving says, I want to. The latter comes from a full heart. Thanksgiving is an open gate into the love of God. -Robert N. Rodenmayer, The Newsletter Newsletter

5 PW Thank Offering 2009 Together with Presbyterian Women across the U.S. we are preparing for our annual Thank Offering. It began in 1888 as an over and above Thank Offering to our Lord. Times and amounts have changed. This year 27 projects have been chosen to benefit from the offering, both in the U.S. and worldwide. Page 5 The theme scripture is 2 Chronicles 29:36, All the people rejoiced because of what God had done. Our poster is in place on the new bulletin boards and envelopes are ready on the table in the back of the sanctuary. The offering will be dedicated at the Coordinating Team meeting on Tuesday, November 17, 10:00 am at the church. All women are invited. 40% of the offering will go to medical help. Schools, hospitals, elder care, hunger and clean water projects will benefit. Gifts can be put in the offering plate marked PW Thank Offering or given to treasurer Kathy Mattson. Rejoice in Thanksgiving! Ruth Solomon Scouting for Food Our church scouting units, Troop 116 and Pack 230, will be participating in Scouting For Food on Saturday, November 14. The area we are assigned for door-todoor food pickup is a large area across Lake Lowell Avenue from the church, and out to the Dooley Lane area. This year we will also set up a barrel in the church so our congregation members who live in areas outside our usual pickup can bring their donation to church and place it in the barrel, and our units will receive credit for it. Last year the troop and pack combined gathered the most pounds of food of all Scouting units in the Nampa area. It is our biggest service project of the year, and we hope to surpass last year s effort this year. All food will stay in Nampa for use in feeding our needy families. We would appreciate your support. We need canned items, non perishables, but nothing in glass. Thanks! Call me if you have questions. Carrol Cowman Dual purpose bell concert on November 7 The unique and beautiful blend of handbells and piano will resound at a Ring Praise concert on Saturday, November 7 at 7:00 pm at the church. The music will be all the songs on our new CD, Ring Praise 3. An offering will be taken to complete the purchase of a 4 th octave of handbells for the church. Last month I announced that our church won a 3- octave set of handchimes and that we are putting the $1,830 value of them toward a 4 th octave of handbells. Some donations toward the $2,500+ that is still needed have already come in. The concert offering will go toward the remainder that is needed. The new bells are scheduled to be shipped near the end of November. Refreshments after the concert will be served by Koinonia Bells. It s been three years since our last CD was released so it was time to record more of the songs we love to share at our concerts. As of this writing, it is in the process of being duplicated and scheduled to be out by the concert. The accompaniment for Glory Bound was done on the theatre organ by Sean complete with the train starting. Two other songs, Breathe and Variations on Zacchaeus use various keyboard sounds instead of piano to add a different color to the music. 6 Page 6 October camping enjoyed by all Ten brave souls headed out camping in October and had a fabulous time. It was cool and very windy, but no rain, at Three Island State Park and that didn t get in the way of our group having a fabulous time. Several actually started out the week before and headed to the land of a thousand springs in the Hagerman area. They came back home, freshened up and restocked and then traveled back out to the Three Island Area by Glenn s Ferry which was the original camping spot. They told the rest of us of their adventures of the prior week and the great time they had experienced, including the effects on one of too much time in a hot spring, right Bill? Games were played, stories were swapped, fish were caught and a winery was toured and sampled (both food and fermented drink). A campfire was enjoyed that included a magic log. What s a magic log you ask? Come out on the next family camp and you will probably get to experience one for yourself. I am sure that all would agree that the highlight of the outing was the worship service we attended at the Presbyterian Church in King Hill. This church is the furthest one east that is in the Boise Presbytery. A few of the regulars were out ill that morning so the ten of us more than doubled their attendance. The regular minister couldn t be there and he had arranged for someone else to preach. That person became ill and Chaz who is the their commissioned lay pastor found out that he needed to cover the service at 3:00 the day before. He did a wonderful job and since he received his training in the seminary without walls program that Bruce started and still oversees, Bruce should be very happy with how everything went. After the service we enjoyed a fellowship time and then we were all asked out to brunch by Ken and Jan Jones. They live in Boise but Ken grew up in King Hill and in that church. He is still a member there and he and his wife attend regularly. They took us to the Oregon Trail Café and Bar. What a great time. We started talking about where we will be going for Family Camp next summer. Mountain View campground (by Lowman) is high on the list but it only has a few spots so we may need to get a count of who is planning to go shortly after the first of the year. Another strong possibility is Bull Trout Lake. It is at a much higher altitude and so it should be much cooler. It has plenty of camp sites but it is a very popular spot so reservations would have to be made early again causing us to make a decision early next year. Right now we are thinking of going the weekend of August 6-8 but that is not set for sure. Start making your plans and if you have any questions or suggestions let Ron or Phyllis know. Ron Tincher The beginning of Advent November is the month of Thanksgiving, but it often also includes the beginning of a new church year. This year, November 29 is the first Sunday of Advent. The season of Advent is about Jesus, the Word, coming. It s about anticipating and preparing for Christ s arrival. God comes to us in many and various ways. He speaks to us through the prophets and saints. He comes and speaks to us when we are listening. He comes in the beauty and mysteries of nature. Most of all, God comes in the person of Christ, speaking to his listeners face to face. Pastor Edmund Steimle put it this way: The Christian story is a story of God coming into the middle of life, of our lives, opening the dialogue with us. That s what Advent is really all about: God visiting the earth in person to speak with anyone and everyone who is ready to do so. -The Newsletter Newsletter Advent calendars Advent calendars to help families focus daily on each of the candles lit on the four Sundays before Christmas will be given to each child. Additional copies will be available on the table in back of the sanctuary for others who are interested. The daily devotional booklet, Upper Room, is also available on the table and is another excellent resource for celebrating the season.

7 Have we forgotten God? We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation has grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming Page 7 and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us. It has seemed to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole of the American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November as a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. -Abraham Lincoln, 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation A guest at the table For, after all, put it as we may to ourselves, we are all of us from birth to death guests at a table which we did not spread. The sun, the earth, love, friends, our very breath are parts of the banquet. Shall we think of the day as a chance to come nearer to our Host, and to find out something of him who has fed us so long? -Rebecca Harding Davis, The Newsletter Newsletter God of the humdrum If God is not in your typewriter as well as your hymnbook, there is something wrong with your religion. If God does not enter your kitchen, there is something wrong with your kitchen. If you can t take God into your recreation, there is something wrong with your play. If God for you does not smile, there is something wrong with your idea of God. We all believe in the God of the heroic. What we need most these days is the God of the humdrum the commonplace, the everyday. -Peter Marshall, The Newsletter Newsletter New church directory A new church directory is available! You may pick up your copy on Sunday mornings or stop by during office hours. This isn t a photo directory, but it does contain the most up-to-date information that we have on everyone who attends regularly. A great flame of gratitude James S. Stewart ( ) was one of the last century s most brilliant biblical scholars and preachers. In fact, Preaching Magazine ranked him as the best preacher of the 20th century. He taught at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and wrote many books. A hint of his insightfulness is found in the words he wrote about the book of Psalms: All the way through the book of Psalms you feel that you are walking on a smoldering volcano of praise, liable to burst out at any moment into a great flame of gratitude to God. -The Newsletter Newsletter

8 Page 8 The discipline of gratitude Gratitude goes beyond the mine and thine and claims the truth that all of life is a pure gift. In the past I always thought of gratitude as a spontaneous response to the awareness of gifts received, but now I realize that gratitude can also be lived as a discipline. All Saints Day In the first days and years of Christianity, all Christians were often called saints (see 1 Corinthians 1:2, NRSV). As time went on, certain Christians who lived holy and sanctified lives became special examples of truly living above the crowd in their dedication and service on God s behalf. As other Christians recognized these very pious souls, the Roman Catholic Church began to cherish them as true saints, commendable as examples to be remembered and appreciated. It was and is still the Pope who, after a thorough examination of the life of the holy person under consideration, can officially designate the person as a saint. Protestants, following the New Testament, may still consider all Christians as saints. Yet those very unique Community Thanksgiving Service Married Life: a married fellowship Mark Gungor visited Nampa the last two years to present a workshop on marriage. His presentations were frank and open regarding the interdynamics of marriage. Now he has produced a video presentation titled What to say. This is a presentation on young people and sex. We have the video series. More than money (Continued from page 1) budget through what is generally a long, painful, creative process, but a budget can be limiting and confining. The bottom line is not how much is needed but what do I need to do for my own spiritual formation? I think it is appropriate that stewardship emphasis is done during the month of Thanksgiving. It is a re- The discipline of gratitude is the explicit effort to acknowledge that all I am and have is given to me as a gift of love, a gift to be celebrated with joy. -Henri J.M. Nouwen, The Newsletter Newsletter Christians who have exhibited great commitment to Christ in special ways are often hailed as being saintly, especially after death. Phillips Brooks, for example, an Episcopal priest in Boston, was honored for his godliness with a statue placed in front of Boston s Trinity Church. The sculpture depicts Christ resting his hand upon Brooks. On All Saints Day, all Christians should remember those like Brooks who have faithfully passed the torch of faith and service to Christ s followers. -The Newsletter Newsletter Sunday, November 1, is All Saints Day. During the worship service there will be a special tribute. The annual Community Thanksgiving Worship Service is Wednesday, November 25, 7:00 pm at the LDS 8th Ward, Roosevelt. The service is a combination of talent and insights from our Nampa community. The preacher this year is the interim at Trinity Lutheran Church. It is never too early to think about how one will communicate this subject. Sex surrounds our young people. Sex was created to be a wonderful and meaningful expression of love for married people. But it has been misrepresented in the media. The video will be presented over two Tuesday evenings, November 10 and 17, 7:00-8:30 pm, at the church. Each night will include discussion. This is for all ages, but particularly for married folks with children. Plan to come and invite friends. minder of our abundance not to use abundance as a form of guilt but as a form of thankfulness for what God has done. Stewardship is a gift of grace. It s time to start thinking of the implications for our life of discipleship.

9 Especially for you from Pastor Bruce Dear children, I am still excited about the book I ve shown you which is a lady s attempt to simplify the Bible words for you. She writes in her Jesus Storybook, God s kingdom is wherever God is King. It s wherever God is in charge. It s where he fills your heart up with his Forever Happiness and you stop running away from him and you love him. Following this passage in Matthew 13 is the parable or story that explains the verse. The parable tells of someone who found a treasure in a field. He is all excited about his find and sells all he has to buy the field where the treasure comes from. The Jesus Storybook expresses Jesus explanation of the parable like this: Coming home to God is as wonderful as finding a treasure! You might have to dig before you find it. You might have to look before you see it. You might even have to give up everything you have to get it. But being where God is being in his kingdom that s more important than anything else in all the world. It s worth anything you have to give up because God is the real treasure. Let me put it in a more personal way for you: you and I are on a treasure hunt to find the riches of life. God is the biggest gift we will find. Thinking of you, Bible Verse of the Month...the kingdom of God is like a treasure hidden in a field... Matthew 13:44
