I so enjoy coming to church to experience what happens to us together. Let me be more specific. First, seeing the people who are there is fun for me. Each one of you has a life (sounds too simple doesn t it). You have a history you bring to the service and you have dreams and experiences that make you who you are. As such you are special. Your presence says, I am here because the value of worship is worth my time to get up, dress, and come. There is something here for me. For others there are things going on that need help. For all of us there are times when life doesn t seem to work real smoothly. There is comfort in the prayers offered in worship even when specifically they aren t for you. As a young person I remember praying in church because somehow I sensed it was a special place to make that connection with God. At this juncture of my life I know I can make a prayer connection anytime, but even today I feel church is a special place because it is a place dedicated to worship. Our weekly services are always traveling along the road of the church year. Each Sunday is marked by some particular season that is celebrated in the church year. Presently we are in lent which focuses on our preparation for the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. To come to worship means Easter is coming on Sunday in April, but it also means Easter is coming in my life. There is a dual nature to worship that is powerful. Added to the worship year for me is the work of the worship committee. Each week I know there has been planning in the prayers, Bible reading, songs, etc. to spiritually connect each parishioner spiritually to some aspect of our walk of faith. This committee meets once a month and lays out not only next week but weeks ahead. This planning is not done to stifle the impact but to enhance the lives of attendees. As I ponder worship, I cannot tell you what it means to be up front with a bunch of people who want to help lead. We try to avoid a circus where too many people come on stage and off like clowns out of a car in the circus. But to be up there with the readers, choir, Sean, Phyllis, Elaine and so many other participants is very special. I remember when one (Continued on page 4) Worship Lessons The Beatitudes March 7 Matthew 5:3 To mourn: Grieving for the World March 14 Matthew 5:4 To be meek: A Style of Leadership March 21 Matthew 5:5 To hunger and thirst: Facing Mismanagement March 28 Palm Sunday Passion Narrative and Music

Session gave the Building Finance Committee permission to open a Pay Pal account for charitable giving to facilitate giving by credit card and direct draw for those who choose to give that way. The decision of how best to utilize the New Covenant Building Fund was deferred to a later meeting. Sally Moore, Steve Watkins and Kip Winter were elected to the Building Oversight Committee. 3 Building project update Session has appointed a building oversight committee to work with the architect and contractors. They are Steve Watkins, Sandi Kurtz, Ralph Williams, Kip Winter and Sally Moore. Our chosen architect, Randy Haverfield, is making good progress on the working plans for our new addition and remodeling. David Barrett and Kip Winter have been working on kitchen layout and we have consulted with Bruce and Phyllis on the new office area. The building improvement finance committee members are: Brett Lolley, Shawna Anderson, Ina & Ken Sano, Ron Howell, David Peterson, and Rodney Moore. This committee has been tracking the pledged Page 3 amounts and gifts received for the building fund. To date we have received 38 pledges and gifts for the building fund totaling $116, towards the threshold of $135, construction start goal, or 50% of the total estimated construction cost of $270, In addition to the pledged and received building fund gifts, $36, remains in the New Covenant building fund. We encourage all of our members to prayerfully consider your pledge towards this project remembering no gift is too small; they all are important to this expanded building and mission project. Sally Moore Were You There? Lenten Worship Series For the past several years the churches of the Nampa Ministerial Association have celebrated Lent together as a community by taking turns hosting Thursday night worship services held throughout the community. The services begin with a simple soup supper at 6:00 pm followed by a short worship service at 7:00. Exceptions to this are, of course, the Ash Wednesday service, which was held on Wednesday, February 17 and the Good Friday service, which will be held on Friday, April 2 at noon. The theme for this year is Were You There. Each week we will look at Jesus crucifixion through the eyes of those who journeyed to the cross by his side. Will you be there to join us on this journey? This apportionment is used for the operational expenses of each level of our denomination: Presbytery of Boise, Synod of the Pacific in San Francisco, and General Assembly in Louisville. Last year we paid $4, of which $2, was contributed by members toward this obligation. The remaining came out of General Fund. This year we will pay $4, Each member is encouraged to pay their portion so more of our church s operational budget can be used to support programs. Please indicate on your check that it is for per capita. New tables! The Deacons have purchased two 4 x20 tables. They replace the old card tables we used for events such as Crop Walk. The tables are stored in the coat closet next to the fellowship hall. You are welcome to use these tables, but please return them to the closet. Amazing gratitude John Chrysostom was an early church father who lived in Constantinople in the fourth century A.D. He spoke plainly against all kinds of iniquity. Unfortunately, his preaching made immoral people uncomfortable, so he was exiled from the city. When Chrysostom wrote letters to people who had befriended him, he ended every letter with the words, Praise God for all things! Faithful souls truly do praise God for all things. After all, it is life s hurtful, painful blows that compel us to seek his mercy and guidance. God s love enables us to praise him for everything no matter what. -The Newsletter Newsletter Experiencing worship (Continued from page 1) of our young people helped play the prelude; I nearly cried it was so powerful not necessarily the performance, but the willingness demonstrated to give a part of themselves to prepare us to meet God in the service. Each Sunday I go home to my Sunday nap and say thank you to God, as I fall off to sleep, for those who have added so much to help me connect once again to a higher calling. Warmly,

5 Family Camp 2010 Mark your calendars now for a great weekend in the mountains. We have a group camp site reserved for three nights at Bull Trout starting Thursday, August 5. I have heard from many that this is a great camping spot and Phyllis and I checked it out last summer. It is at 6,900 feet, heavily wooded and an absolutely gorgeous spot. There are two lakes in the area and the terrain there is basically flat so you can easily walk to them. The directions from Lowman are: go 34 miles northeast towards Stanley on ID 21; 2 miles southwest on Forest Road 520. We will start a sign up soon and the number that sign up will determine the camping cost. It will end up lower than the $45 for three nights in an individual site and we don t have to be concerned about making individual reservations. If you have any questions see Ron or Phyllis Tincher. Page 5 Check it out at: site.php?plicstate=id&id=2132. Or just do a search for Bull Trout campgrounds. If you check it out on recreation.gov it is listed as Bull Trout. Your help is wanted! We have a wonderful, growing group of babies, children and young people in our church. With this ever changing group comes the responsibility to improve our programs that we provide. In order to better meet the needs of the youth in this church, Christian Education would like your input and help. Christian Education is looking to form a Christian Education Committee. This group will be responsible for making decisions for classes and activities for youth and adults in our church. This is a wonderful opportunity to participate in forming the future of our Christian Education program here at the church. If you would like to be a part of this group, contact Paul Anderson or Rona Peterson. It is almost time to start working towards our 2010 Vacation Bible School program. There will be a brief meeting on Sunday, March 14, following the worship service in the Fireplace room. We will introduce this year s theme, start picking dates for VBS, and making station requests. If you are interested in participating this year, please plan to attend!!! Christian Education, Paul Anderson & Rona Peterson Annual Easter Egg Hunt Once again Christian Education is planning the annual Easter Egg Hunt. We will be collecting candy donations through the month of March. There will be a basket for donations at the back of the church. Thank you for your con- tinued support of this fun event for our children and friends. Mark your calendar: If you would like to help fill eggs, meet at the church on Saturday, April 3, at 10:00 am. Pot of gold discovered at the end of Presbyterian rainbow!!! The building project finance committee is sponsoring an old gold collection to help grow the building fund. You can contribute your unused and broken gold jewelry toward the building fund and get a receipt for the gold donation to use for tax deduction purposes. Simply bring your gold pieces to the church any Sunday in March in a Ziploc bag with your name on it. Our resident leprechaun (David Peterson) will weigh and evaluate your stash. David does this as a part of his business and is qualified to make these assessments. Just look for him near the pot of gold in the Narthex or simply drop your baggie into the POT.

6 Page 6 What is faith? Sight is not faith, and hearing is not faith, neither is feeling faith; but believing when we neither see, hear nor feel is faith; and everywhere the Bible tells us our salvation is to be by faith. Therefore we must believe before we feel, and often against our feelings, if we would honor God by our faith. -Hannah Whitall Smith, The Newsletter Newsletter Conference on growing deeper in Christ This May 4-6 will be the third year the Pacific Northwest Small Church Conference will be in Boise. The theme is Going Deeper experiencing the heart of Christ through John s gospel. The key Bible verse is John 17:26: I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them. (ESV) The plenary speakers are F. Dale Bruner, Ph.D. and Lynn Ziegenfuss. Dr. Bruner earned his M.Div. at Princeton Theological Seminary and his Ph.D. at Germany s Hamburg University. He taught for 11 years at Union Theological Seminary in the Philippines, then 22 years at Whitworth College. Since his retirement in 1997, he has completed the second edition of his excellent commentary on the Gospel of Matthew and is currently completing his commentary on the Gospel of John. Lynn is a leadership development and spiritual formation specialist. Her passion is to encourage, equip, and empower followers of Jesus, especially leaders, to move toward spiritual maturing and Kingdom effectiveness. The cost for the first 6 registrants from our church is only $99 which includes two nights at the Hilton Garden Inn at the Boise Spectrum, meals beginning with dinner on Tuesday through breakfast on Thursday, plus all program activities. Brochures including registration are available on the table in the back of the sanctuary. One Great Hour of Sharing Jesus said, Do you love me? Feed my sheep. (John 21:16-27) Since 1949, Presbyterians have joined with millions of other Christians through One Great Hour of Sharing to share God s love with people experiencing need. Our gifts support ministries of disaster response, refugee assistance and resettlement, and community development that help people find safe refuge, start new lives and work together to strengthen their families and communities. Recognizing that the hope we have in Christ is lived out in our hope for one another, we respond with gifts that help our sisters and brothers around the world find the hope for a brighter future. The Presbyterian Hunger Program receives 36 percent of undesignated One Great Hour of Sharing gifts, while the Self-Development of People and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance each receive 32 percent. For at least the past ten years, the offering has received about $20 million among the denominations. The PC (USA) offering has received $8 million to $11 million for at least the past twenty years. More information about the offering will be provided through bulletin inserts or go to oghs. King of kings During Jesus earthly life, colored cloth was very expensive. Only royalty and wealthy people could afford it. When Jesus was arrested and sentenced to die, the soldiers set about humiliating him (see Mark 15:16-20, NRSV). They found a purple cloak the color of royalty and put it on him. Then they placed a crown of thorns on Jesus head. Hail, King of the Jews! they mockingly cried. The soldiers hit Jesus with a reed and spat on him. They taunted him and knelt before him, pretending to honor him. Despite what he endured, our Lord did end up a King King of kings and Lord of lords. -The Newsletter Newsletter

7 The cross is pivotal Pivotal means crucial or absolutely necessary. Such is the cross on which Jesus died. It represents salvation from sin and death. To see sin in all its cruelty and depravity, look at the cross. The cross can jar a person to the core. In his parent s bedroom, a teenager noticed a picture he d never paid attention to before. It was a vivid scene of the Crucifixion. As the boy studied it, his emotions began to stir. He saw the helpless Christ dying, the helmeted soldiers bearing spears, the crowd seething with hatred. Jesus was pinned to the cross, bleeding and helpless. Mary stood nearby, consumed by grief. Come to the Table meals The Nampa Ministerial Association, First Church of the Nazarene, and other local churches are partnering to help feed the 690+ homeless children and their immediate families in our community. These meals are scheduled for Tuesdays and Saturdays starting January 26 and will continue throughout the rest of the winter. They will be held at First Church of the Nazarene, Ferdinand Hall, beginning at 5:30 pm. In addition to dinner, we are also planning to encourage some simple games in hopes that we can help these families try to preserve their units and truly enjoy a typical healthy family environment at least a couple of evenings a week. Page 7 The picture revealed sin and its results: suffering and death. What if the room had a different picture, with an empty tomb and an angel announcing Christ s resurrection? Those represent that God loves mankind so much he still wants to save us, no matter what we ve done. May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world (Galatians 6:14, NRSV). -The Newsletter Newsletter We are requesting your help in two main areas: 1) Assisting with cooking and serving. 2) Supplying the ingredients needed for the dinners. Signup sheets are posted on the Mission Bulletin Board as well as the hospitality table in the back of the sanctuary. If you are a member of a group or a club that you feel would like to help, please encourage this activity. Food donations can be left in our church kitchen marked: Come to the Table. Donations will also be graciously received. Please call Marti Rippe, or , with any questions or suggestions. Your help is always appreciated! 8 Page 8 Reading the Bible Have you been reading your Bible? Those of us who have been are now in the Book of Numbers. In the New Testament we are bouncing around, but Matthew is completed along with several Psalms and some of Romans. The first quarter of the year will be done the end of March and those of us keeping up will be one quarter done. It is not too late to begin. You can catch up. Our church is offering this discipline to ourselves this year. Many of you have your own practice of reading the Bible, but this opportunity lays out a plan to cover it all. Barbara Bourrie has agreed to help encourage us by setting up periodic discussions to discuss what we ve read and encourage us to stay faithful to the reading. Hosanna, Loud Hosanna On Palm Sunday, many congregations sing a hymn written for children but loved by adults, too. Jeanette Threlfall, an Englishwoman, composed Hosanna, Loud Hosanna in Threlfall s parents died when she was still very young, so she was sent from one relative to another. She also had two serious accidents during childhood, leaving her disabled. Threlfall handled her difficulties by developing a beautiful, cheerful character. She was more concerned about others than herself. People loved to visit her because they left feeling uplifted and joyous. Threlfall Why bother to read the Bible? We are recognized as people of the book. Our history is in the pages of the Bible. The Bible is God s Word to us. It is a book about how people have interpreted God s work over time. It is written in human words regarding human history but is not merely a human book. It is the record of God s interaction with human kind. Bible scholar Gordon Fee writes, Interpretation of the Bible is demanded by the tension that exists between its eternal relevance and its historical particularity. Read along with us; it s worth the time. Bruce Swanson became known for her sacred poems and hymns. Many are considered classics, filled with sound doctrine and fervent devotion. Here is the first stanza of her Palm Sunday anthem: Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang; Through pillared court and temple the lovely anthem rang. To Jesus, who had blessed them close folded to his breast, The children sang their praises, the simplest and the best. -The Newsletter Newsletter Thank you for the wonderful buffet that was prepared for us. I will be always grateful. Dorlene Gaines Dear Sponsor, Thank you so much for the Christmas gift card. I hope you realize how much your help has, and still does mean to me. I never thought I would need it this long. My income is so low, and it would be so much harder for me if I didn t have your help. You are wonderful people. God bless you. Love, Marion Lenten feasting and fasting (Continued from page 7) Fast from revenge; Feast on forgiveness. Fast from tears of sorrow; Feast on tears of joy. Fast from getting; Feast on giving. 9 Especially for you Dear young friends, Easter is coming!!!! To say that is almost like saying, Christmas is coming. It means something special is happening. from Pastor Bruce For us at church it means there will be more activities. There are some added worship services we call Lenten Services. We are so fortunate to live in a community where we get to worship with other churches. Too many communities look at other kinds of churches with suspicion, but we get to worship together. Other things we do are to have special Sunday services. The end of the month our music people will lead a worship with song and instruments. We do this on Palm Sunday which is the Sunday in which we remember Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey with palms being laid on his path. This is the Sunday before Easter. Palm Sunday begins what we call Holy Week. This is the week we remember events that came just before Christ was crucified and rose. So, we have Maundy Thursday when we will share a Seder Meal. Maundy Thursday is the day Jesus brought his disciples to pray. Then there is Good Friday where we remember Christ s crucifixion. Finally, there is Sunday where we decorate the cross and sing our hearts out to God s glory because we remember that through the resurrection, God never leaves us. So, remember and enjoy this month. Warmly, Bible Verse of the Month Truly this was the Son of God! Matthew 27:54 (these are the words of a centurion when Christ died)
