2nd October 2016 Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost Welcome to St Mark s Anglican Church a welcoming, inclusive community where questions are encouraged and everyone has a place at God's table. We hope your time with us is special and that you are able to join us after the service for tea or coffee and some morning tea. If you are visiting from another church or tradition and you wish to do so you are welcome to receive the bread and wine of holy communion with us this morning. If you prefer you can ask for a blessing or simply remain in your seat at the time of communion. He showed me something small, no bigger than a hazelnut, lying in the palm of my hand. In this little thing I saw three properties. The first is that God made it, the second is that God loves it, the third is that God preserves it. But what did I see in it? It is that God is the creator and protector and the lover. Mother Julian of Norwich

Scripture Sentence Collect We pray for the soul of Tom Anderson-Smith whose funeral took place last week. May Tom rest in peace. Who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? But I am among you, says the Lord, as one who serves. Luke Faithful God, have mercy on us your unworthy servants, and increase our faith, that, trusting in your Spirit s power to work in us and through us, we may never be ashamed to witness to our Lord but may obediently serve him all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. First Reading: Lamentations How lonely sits the city that once was full of people! How like a widow she has become, she that was great among the nations! She that was a princess among the provinces has become a vassal. She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has no one to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they have become her enemies. Judah has gone into exile with suffering and hard servitude; she lives now among the nations, and finds no resting-place; her pursuers have all overtaken her in the midst of her distress. The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to the festivals; all her gates are desolate, her priests groan; her young girls grieve, and her lot is bitter. Her foes have become the masters, her enemies prosper, because the Lord has made her suffer for the multitude of her transgressions; her children have gone away, captives before the foe. From daughter Zion has departed all her majesty. Her princes have become like stags that find no pasture; they fled without strength before the pursuer. Psalm 137: page 369 of the prayer book Second Reading: 2 Timothy

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, for the sake of the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I am grateful to God whom I worship with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did when I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline. Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. For this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher, and for this reason I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know the one in whom I have put my trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that day what I have entrusted to him. Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us. Gospel: Luke The apostles said to the Lord, Increase our faith! The Lord replied, If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, Be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it would obey you. Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from ploughing or tending sheep in the field, Come here at once and take your place at the table? Would you not rather say to him, Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink? Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done! Blessing of Animals this Afternoon 3pm All Creatures, Furry, Finned and Feathered are invited to St Mark s NEXT Sunday afternoon for a short service of thanksgiving as we remember St Francis and give thanks for all the blessings that companion animals bring into our lives. All Are Welcome!* *as long as they are under control and suitably restrained. No biting or fighting, please.

Next Sunday 9th October pm: Sunday Conversation with Matt Glover Thinking about Christianity and Sexuality with openness and honesty with Matt Glover, Director of MGA Counselling Services. Holding the positions of Youth Pastor, Associate Pastor and finally Senior Pastor, Matt wrestled with the institution of the church and living an authentic spirituality. Pastoral care is one of Matt s strengths, and this has been utilised as a chaplain in the aftermath of the Black Saturday bush fires, caring for families in their grief after unexpectedly losing a loved one, running a play group for homeless fathers, helping people recover from spiritual abuse, and in his extensive work with the LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex) community of Melbourne. Since leaving church based ministry, Matt has been involved with palliative care, grief and loss counselling and has now established MGA (Matt Glover and Associates) Counselling Services to do his part in ensuring as many people as possible get to experience life to the full. Working towards improving the mental health of the LGBTI community is one of Matt s passions and in July 2012 he was awarded Freedom 2b s Most significant contribution to increasing understanding between the LGBTI community and people from faith backgrounds. Matt also belongs to the Australian Counselling Association. 6.00pm: Taize Service The Taizé community is an ecumenical monastic order with a strong devotion to peace and justice through prayer and meditation. The 100-strong community of monks is drawn from 30 countries across the world. It was founded in 1940 by Roger Louis Schutz-Marsauche (known as 'Brother Roger'). Prayer and silence are at the heart of the life at Taizé. Taizé has spawned a unique style of worship that has become popular in churches, retreat centres and seminaries throughout the world. The singing of distinctive and muchrepeated prayer chants during candlelit prayer services is one of its trademarks. Taizé music highlights simple phrases, usually lines from the Psalms or other pieces of scripture, repeated or sung in canon. The repetition is designed to help meditation and prayer. Only one morning service on 23 October as we celebrate our Dedication Festival together as a whole parish. We will gather for a choral eucharist at 10.15am and remain for an early lunch in the hall or garden afterwards. A sheet is available at the back of the church so we can have an idea of numbers for catering purposes.

Notices and Reminders Welcome to St Mark s this morning. We hope your time with us is special and that you are able to join us for tea and toast after the 7.00 am service or morning tea after the 8.30am and 10.15am services. This morning Mothers Union will be selling cards after all of our morning services. With only three months until Christmas, you can get organised early and buy Christmas cards too. Join us for Taize-style worship at St Mark s at 6pm on Sunday 9th October. The singing of distinctive and much-repeated prayer chants during candlelit prayer services is one of its trademarks. Taizé music highlights simple phrases, usually lines from the Psalms or other pieces of scripture, repeated or sung in canon. The repetition is designed to help meditation and prayer. Thank you to all those who have given money towards the planned work on the Memorial Garden. We are hoping to begin work before the end of the year, to have it completed in time for our Centenary, so If you intend to make a contribution towards the project please do so soon so we can engage a landscaper to begin the work. In readiness for our Centenary Celebrations in 2017, a steering group has begun work on a Strategic Planning process so that together we can develop a clear vision for where we are going as a church as we begin the next chapter in the life of the Parish. Very soon you will be invited to have your say and be part of the process. Please begin thinking about your vision for St Mark s and what might be needed to make it happen. Please set aside the day on 12 November to be part of our planning process. The University of the Sunshine Coast Student Guild need pasta and rice for their food bank. Please leave your donations in the baskets provided. This week the Tuesday evening study group will begin meeting again (after a long recess) at 7.00pm on 4 October. We will finish off the Living the Questions material we started early in the year and then think about what we might look at next. New people are welcome no previous experience or knowledge required!! Older members of our parish sometimes struggle to get to church when they no longer have a car. We currently have a parishioner who would like a lift from Kawana Island to the 10.15am service. If anyone is willing to help bring this lady to Church or pick up from other areas, please let the wardens or parish office know. Thank you. Our prayer as we prepare for our Centenary in 2017 God of mission, who alone brings growth to your Church, send your Holy Spirit to give vision to our planning, wisdom to our actions, and power to our witness. Help our church to grow in numbers, in spiritual commitment to you, and in service to our local community, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
