Celebration of Confirmation & Reception into the Anglican Communion Sunday, October 2, :00 p.m. St. Peter s, Erindale 3041 Mississauga Road, Mississauga, ON L5L 0B The Rt. Rev d Patrick Yu The Rev d Canon Jennifer Reid, Incumbent The Rev d Canon Richard Miller, Associate Roshni Jayawardena, Bishop s Chaplain The Rev. Clement Carelse, Organist
20th Sunday After Pentecost Organ Prelude and Procession (The congregation stands) Hymn 430 Will You Come and Follow Me Will you come and follow me if I but call your name? Will you go where you don t know and never be the same? Will you let my love be shown, will you let my name be known, will you let my life be grown in you and you in me? Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name? Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same? Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare? Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me? Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name? Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same? Will you kiss the leper clean and do such as this unseen, and admit to what I mean in you and you in me? Will you love the you you hide if I but call your name? Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same? Will you use the faith you ve found to reshape the world around, through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me? Lord, your summons echoes true when you but call my name. Let me turn and follow you and never be the same. In your company I ll go where your love and footsteps show. Thus I ll move and live and grow in you and you in me. Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. There is one body and one Spirit, There is one hope in God s call to us; 2
Collect One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all. Almighty God, you have built your Church on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone. Join us together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may become a holy temple, acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Lessons (The congregation is seated) Habakkuk 1:1-4; 2:1-4 (read by Kevin Matterson) The oracle that the prophet Habakkuk saw. O LORD, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not listen? Or cry to you Violence! and you will not save? Why do you make me see wrong-doing and look at trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. So the law becomes slack and justice never prevails. The wicked surround the righteous therefore judgment comes forth perverted. I will stand at my watchpost, and station myself on the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what he will answer concerning my complaint. Then the LORD answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith. Reader: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (A short period of silent reflection follows the reading) 2 Timothy1:1-14 (read by Jason Ghirardo) Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, for the sake of the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I am grateful to God whom I worship with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did when I remember you constantly in my prayers night 3
and day. Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline. Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. For this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher, and for this reason I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know the one in whom I have put my trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that day what I have entrusted to him. Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us. Reader: Hymn The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 458 Seek Ye First Seek ye first the kingdom of God and God s righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Allelu, alleluia. Refrain Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Allelu, alleluia. Ask and it shall be given unto you; seek and you shall find; knock and the door shall be opened unto you. Allelu, alleluia. Refrain Holy Gospel Luke 17:5-10 Reader: The Lord be with you. And also with you. 4
Reader:: Gospel Acclamation Reader: Reader : The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia (sung) The apostles said to the Lord, Increase our faith! The Lord replied, If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, Be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it would obey you. Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, Come here at once and take your place at the table? Would you not rather say to him, Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink? Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done! The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia (sung) (A short period of silent reflection follows the reading) Homily The Rt. Rev. Patrick Yu Presentation & Examination Presenters: I present names for Confirmation. Presenters: Candidates: Candidates: Candidates: I present names to be received into this Communion. Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil? I do. Do you renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? I Do. Do you put your whole trust in his grace and love? I do, and with God s grace I will follow him as my Saviour and Lord. 5
Celebrant: Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ? We will. Let us join with those who commit themselves again to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. The Renewal of Our Baptismal Covenant Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in God the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the good news of God in Christ? I will, with God s help. 6
Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbour as yourself? I will, with God s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God s help. Will you strive to safeguard the integrity of God s creation, and respect, sustain and renew the life of the Earth? I will, with God s help. Let us pray for those who are affirming their baptism, and for all the baptized everywhere, saying, Lord, hear our prayer. The Prayers of the People (led by Melissa Khan and Sarah Shad) The response to each petition will be: Lord, hear our prayer. Hymn 402 Come and fill our hearts Come and fill our hearts with your peace. You alone, O Lord, are holy. Come and fill our hearts with your peace, alleluia! (Repeat 3x) (Followed by a moment of silence then,) Almighty God, we thank you that by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ you have overcome sin and brought us to yourself, and that by the sealing of your Holy Spirit you have bound us to your service. Renew in these your servants the covenant you made with them at their baptism. Send them forth in the power of that Spirit to perform the service you set before them; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Confirmation and Reception (The confirmands will come forward one by one and kneel before the bishop who will lay his hand upon each one and pray for them) 7
Defend, O Lord, your servant name with your heavenly grace, that he/she may continue yours for ever, and daily increase in your Holy Spirit more and more, until he/she comes to your everlasting kingdom. Amen. (The person to be received will come forward) Name, we recognize you as a member of the one holy catholic and apostolic Church, and we receive you into the fellowship of this Communion. God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless, preserve, and keep you. Amen. (After each person has come forward, the bishop will continue with this prayer) The Peace Almighty and everliving God, let your fatherly hand ever be over these your servants; let your Holy Spirit ever be with them; and so lead them in the knowledge and obedience of your word, that they may serve you in this life, and dwell with you in the life to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (We greet one another in the name of the Lord.) The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. (The elements for Communion will be carried in by Eric Adkison and Dorian Doan) Hymn 505 Be Thou My Vision Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that thou art - thou my best thought, by day or by night, waking or sleeping, thy presence my light. Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true Word; I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord; thou my great Father, thine own may I be, thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee. Riches I heed not, nor the world s empty praise; thou mine inheritance, now and always; thou and thou only, first in my heart, high King of heaven, my treasure thou art. 8
High King of heaven, when victory is won, may I reach heaven s joys, bright heaven s Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever be fall, still be my vision, O Ruler of all. Prayer over the Gifts God of truth, receive all we offer you this day. Make us worthy servants, strong to follow in the pattern of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. The Celebration of Holy Communion (Congregation remains standing) The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks and praise, almighty God, through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Redeemer. He is your living Word, through whom you have created all things. By the power of the Holy Spirit He took flesh of the Virgin Mary and shared our human nature. He lived and died as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. In fulfilment of your will he stretched out his hands in suffering, to bring release to those who place their hope in you; and so he won for you a holy people. He chose to bear our griefs and sorrows, and to give up his life on the cross, that he might shatter the chains of evil and death, and banish the darkness of sin and despair. By his resurrection he brings us into the light of your presence. Now with all creation we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, 9
heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Holy and gracious God, accept our praise, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ; who on the night he was handed over to suffering and death, took bread and gave you thanks, saying, Take, and eat: this is my body which is broken for you. In the same way he took the cup, saying, This is my blood which is shed for you. When you do this, you do it in memory of me. Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection, we offer you this bread and this cup, giving thanks that you have made us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. We ask you to send your Holy Spirit upon the offering of your holy Church. Gather into one all who share in these sacred mysteries, filling them with the Holy Spirit and confirming their faith in the truth, that together we may praise you and give you glory through your Servant, Jesus Christ. All glory and honour are yours, Father and Son, with the Holy Spirit in the holy Church, now and for ever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, let us pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We, being many, are one body, for we all share in the one bread. 10
The gifts of God for the People of God. Thanks be to God. The Communion (The Anglican Communion welcomes all who are baptized to receive Holy Communion. If you are not baptized you are welcome to come to the altar for a blessing) Handbells: A Gaelic Blessing (arr. M.K. Parrish ) Prayer after Communion Almighty God, may we who have been strengthened by this eucharist remain in your steadfast love, and show in our lives the saving mystery that we celebrate. This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen. Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen The Dismissal Hymn Go forth in the name of Christ. Thanks be to God. 460 Lord, the Light of Your Love Is Shining Lord, the light of your love is shining, in the midst of the darkness shining; Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us; set us free by the truth you now bring us, shine on me, shine on me. Refrain Shine, Jesus, shine; fill this land with the Father s glory; blaze, Spirit, blaze: set our hearts on fire. Flow, river, flow: flood the nations with grace and mercy; send forth your word, Lord, and let there be light. 11
Lord, I come to your awesome presence, from the shadows into your radiance; by the blood I may enter your brightness; search me, try me, consume all my darkness, shine on me, shine on me. Refrain As we gaze on your kingly brightness so our faces display your likeness; ever changing from glory to glory, mirrored here may our lives tell your story, shine on me, shine on me.
