3 From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers Thus far in our discussion of obstacles to the mission of the Church, a mission in which we all share through our baptism, we have mentioned foundational spirits such as obstinacy, falsity, discouragement, and disobedience. We have discussed personal sin, such as those that stem from pride, avarice, anger, envy, lust, sloth, and gluttony. And we have pointed out psychological concerns, such as denial, co-dependency, passive-aggression, and narcissism. A conversation on the obstacles to the mission of the Church would not be complete without a conversation on the theme of evil. Thus with this article we turn our attention to evil human evil and demonic evil. We read in Sacred Scripture: A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks (Luke 6:45). There are people who have spent their lives building up evil in their hearts, never tiring of spreading their venom. Unlike the character Geraldine, from the old Flip Wilson television series, who often said, The devil made me do it, those who act from the store of evil in their hearts are responsible for their own decisions in life. Psychologist Erich Fromm tells us, The longer we continue to make the wrong decisions, the more our heart hardens; the more often we make the right decisions, the more our heart softens or better perhaps, comes alive. M. Scott Peck, M.D., best known for his landmark book The Road Less Traveled, has studied the question of human evil from various perspectives, including the use of psychiatric and medical models. In his book, The People of the Lie, Dr. Peck shares that, in his initial struggle to come up with a definition of evil, he was assisted by his eight year old son, who said, Why, Daddy, evil is live spelled backwards. Dr. Peck continues: Evil is in opposition to life. It is that which opposes the life force. It has, in short, to do with killing. Specifically, it has to do with murder namely, unnecessary killing, killing that is not required for biological survival... when I say that evil has to do with killing, I do not mean to restrict myself to corporeal murder. Evil is also that which kills spirit... evil, then, for the moment, is that force, residing either inside or outside of human beings, that seeks to kill life or liveliness. And good is its opposite. Goodness is that which promotes life and liveliness. Certainly, all of us are sinners in need of God s mercy. Dr. Scott states that it is necessary that we first draw the distinction between evil and ordinary sin. It is not their sins per se that characterize evil people. Rather, it is the subtlety and persistent consistency of their sins. This is because the central defect of the evil is not the sin but the refusal to acknowledge it. Those struggling with human evil deny the fault within them, placing the need for guilt outside themselves. Dr. Scott explains: Because in their hearts they consider themselves above reproach, they must lash out at anyone who does reproach them...since the evil, deep down, feel themselves to be faultless, it is inevitable that when they are in conflict with the world they will invariably perceive the conflict as the world s fault. They project their own evil onto the world... Evil people are often destructive because they are attempting to destroy evil. The problem is that they misplace the locus of the evil. Instead of destroying others they should be destroying the sickness within themselves. You may see, in the paragraph above, a connection to Part II s discussion on the sin of pride and Part III s description of narcissism. You would be correct. Dr. Peck states that there is a kind of pride that unrealistically denies our inherent sinfulness and imperfection a kind of overweening pride or arrogance that prompts people to reject and even attack the judgement implied by the day-to-day evidence of their own inadequacy... in [theologian Martin] Buber s words, the malignant narcissist insists upon affirmation independent of all findings. No matter how strong the evidence placed before them, the evil person willfully denies any connection to fault or guilt. Not everyone who struggles with narcissism is evil; what is being referenced is a particular variety of narcissism. Dr. Peck speaks of a malignant narcissism [which] is characterized by an unsubmitted will. All adults who are mentally healthy submit themselves one way or another to something higher than themselves, be it God or truth or love or some other ideal... in summary, to a greater or lesser degree, all mentally healthy individuals submit themselves to the demands of their own conscience. Not so the evil, however. In the conflict between their guilt and their will, it is the guilt that must go and the will that must win. In this we can see connections to Part I s discussion about such things as obstinacy, falsity and disobedience. The evil refuse to see their own imperfections and acknowledge their own guilt; they A University Parish: School of Prayer and Center for the New Evangelization 3
4 must project imperfection and guilt onto others with a fierce willfulness, attempting always to salvage the lies they choose to live. The energy behind their fierce willfulness is fear; the evil fear that their pretense of perfection will be revealed. Dr. Peck reminds us that the evil hate the light the light of goodness that shows them up, the scrutiny that exposes them, the light of truth that penetrates their deception. No one is born this way; it develops over time, through a long series of decisions and choices. Human evil also exhibits itself in a more passive way: the thrall. In the homily I gave at all masses the weekend of February 14-15, 2015, I recounted Dr. Peck words: the theme of thralldom is not infrequent in fairy tales and myths in which princes and princesses and other beings have become captive to the evil power of some wicked witch or demon. There are those who attach themselves to evil people. This can flow out of co-dependency or a timid passive aggression, as discussed in Part II, as well as other causes. The thrall, however, is not an unwilling victim but a collaborator. Dr. Peck states that, as adults, we are not forced by fate to become trapped by an evil power. We set the trap ourselves. In regard to mission, the aggressive evil person brings direct destruction, while the thrall opens doors for them, enables them, and does their bidding. Aggressively evil people and passively evil thralls are easy to hate, but this should not be our response. They are pitiable people living in hells of their own making. Beyond human evil, demonic evil attempts to be an obstacle to the Church s mission. C.S. Lewis states that there is no neutral ground in the universe: every square inch, every split second is claimed by God and counterclaimed by Satan. In my bulletin column of May 26, 2013, I wrote about evil, quoting the Catechism which says, Satan or the devil and other demons are fallen angels who have freely refused to serve God and His plan. Their choice against God is definitive. They try to associate man in their revolt against God (CCC 414). We must be discerning, realizing that God s Spirit is not the only Spirit at work in our lives. Still we should not give into fear of evil, human or demonic. In Part I we discussed a spirit of discouragement. Pope Francis offers us words of ENcouragment. As I shared in the same column of May 26, 2013, he reminds us that we have a standard bearer, Jesus Christ, who protects us and defends us from the insidiousness of the devil, he defends us from ourselves, from our sins... He always forgives us, he is our advocate... We must never forget this... Let us never yield to pessimism, to that bitterness that the devil offers us every day... a Christian can never be sad. Never give way to discouragement.
