3 From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers As we continue our conversation discussing practical ways to live our baptismal vocation to be Priests, Prophets, and Kings Disciples and Missionaries of Jesus Christ, I wish to offer three more words for reflection: Stillness, Beauty, and Trust. In our fast paced world it is difficult for us to stop. We race and race and race externally and interiorly. Often times it seems that our lives are rolling uncontrollably down a hill. Even if we deeply desire to stop, it seems that our breaks do not work. In the midst of such racing, we can lose sight of the overall journey and of our own authentic identity. In light of that, let us begin with Stillness. A key ingredient causing this constant racing is our culture s relationship to work. Work is an important aspect of the life of humanity, but we are taught to overvalue it. Joseph Pieper states that this exhibits itself in three ways. 1. We wrongly value activity for its own sake. This implies that we must be in control and therefore lose the ability to just let things happen, to simply allow them to unfold before us. In this activity for its own sake, my identity becomes wrapped up in what I do. I am what I do which is simply not true. 2. We believe that we are supposed to have a sense of exertion and drudgery with regard to our lives and our work. We are taught that nothing has value unless it is hard and complicated. How many people are unhappy with their work but simply resign themselves to thinking that it is just supposed to be that way? 3. We create a deification of utility and function. We are formed to gauge the worth of something based on its usefulness including people. How many friends are really just looking to see what they can get out of the relationship? How many parents pressure their kids for material success rather than for happiness and deep fulfilment? How many kids believe that if I don t get straight A s mommy and daddy won t love me? The implications of overvaluing work are alarming. We are taught that to sit and do nothing is lazy, unproductive, and useless. This is a lie. The Lord rested on the seventh day and taught us that we must have time for stillness or, to include a more philosophical term, leisure. We have lost sight of the true meaning of stillness, of leisure. What is leisure? Leisure is non-activity. It is a form of silence a way of being silent that is the prerequisite for listening. In work we are the active ones. We are giving. How many people entering into conversation do not really listen to the other person, but just wait for their next chance to speak? They do not receive the other. Leisure is a type of silence that prepares us to receive. It implies an attitude of total receptivity toward reality, an openness of the soul, through which alone can come about those great insights that no amount of mental labor can ever achieve (Joseph Pieper). Leisure helps us to see and to love. It stops us from activity and allows us to behold, to take the time to hold what is before us and consider, ponder, and wonder. The Venerable Fulton J. Sheen tells us that Leisure is a form of silence, not noiselessness. It is the silence of contemplation such as occurs when we let our minds rest on a rosebud, a child at play, a Divine mystery, or a waterfall. Leisure is an attitude of celebration. It is good for us to be joyful! The United States averages far more hours of work each year than Europe, and yet gets far less vacation time. Europeans work to live; we live to work. We do not live in a culture of celebration. Pope Francis has said: together with a culture of work, there must be a culture of leisure as gratification. To put it another way: people who work must take the time to relax, to be with their families, to enjoy themselves, read, listen to music, play a sport. Leisure is freedom from function and utility. Leisure is not simply a break. A break is designed to provide respite so that I can get back to work. A break has its value in relationship to work. Leisure is a value in and of itself and it is a higher value than work, for it allows us time to ponder deeper and higher realities. Joseph Pieper teaches us: In leisure man celebrates the end of his work, allowing his inner eye to dwell for a while upon the reality of Creation. He looks and affirms: it is good. My identity does not come from what I do or from how useful I am. My identity is found in the Heavenly Father s love for me. My life is not meant to be drudgery. Jesus came that I might have life and to have it to the full. Practicing stillness is an important tool in helping me rediscover who I am, and WHOSE I am. In silence, stillness, and leisure, I can rest from the weariness of racing and be comforted by the arms of a loving Father. In A University Parish: School of Prayer and Center for the New Evangelization 3
4 His arms I am able to gain perspective, to see the whole, to enter more deeply into the experience of reality, and to therefore be all-the-more enriched by it. Pope Benedict XVI exhorts us: Do not become utterly absorbed in activism! There would be so much to do that one could be working on it constantly. And that is precisely the wrong thing. Not becoming totally absorbed in activism means maintaining consideratio -- discretion, deeper examination, contemplation, time for interior pondering, vision, and dealing with things, remaining with God and meditating about God. "One should not feel obliged to work ceaselessly; this in itself is important for everyone, too, for instance, every manager, too, and even more so for a Pope. He has to leave many things to others so as to maintain his inner view of the whole, his interior recollection, from which the view of what is essential can proceed. 8 Together, We Change Lives A heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who made a commitment to the 2016 Archbishop s Charities and Development Drive (ABCD). To date, 105 families and individuals have responded generously, contributing $94,740. That is 19 percent to the goal. However, we need the support of all members of St. Augustine Church and Catholic Student Center if we are to be successful in reaching our parish combined goal of $476,456. Now is the time to make a return to the Lord for all He has given us. Even a small gift can make a big difference in the lives of those in need. Whether your gift is $50, $365, $1,000 or even $5,000, it is truly impactful and appreciated. If you have not yet responded to the 2016 ABCD, please consider making a gift a gift from the heart by using the pledge envelopes available in the pews or by making a gift online at Thank you for all that you do and the spirit in which you do it! God bless you! Miller Road, Coral Gables, FL
