3 From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers This weekend I am joining with two brother priests who are celebrating significant milestones. Fr. Michael Davis, the pastor of Little Flower Church here in Coral Gables, is celebrating his silver jubilee twenty-five years of service in the priesthood of Jesus Christ. Fr. Jacob Monteleone, in whose rectory I lived during the first month of my sabbatical last year, is celebrating forty years since his ordination to the priesthood, as well as his retirement. In light of these celebrations, I am sharing with you words from my homily for the Mass of the Lord s Supper, this past Holy Thursday. We cannot speak of the priesthood of Jesus Christ without also speaking of the victimhood of Jesus Christ, for he is both priest and victim. In pagan religions and in the Levitical priesthood of the Old Testament, the priest and the victim were separate. Priests offered bulls, goats, and sheep. It was a vicarious sacrifice, with the animal representing the guilty humans seeking expiation of their sins. The Venerable Fulton Sheen teaches us that when the Son of God became man, he introduced something entirely new to the priesthood. Our Lord differed from the priests of the Old Testament not simply because he came from a lineage other than that of Aaron but also because, unlike others, He united in Himself both priesthood and victimhood. The consequences for all priests are tremendous, for if He did offer Himself for our sins, then we must offer ourselves as victims. The conclusion is inescapable. The man called to the ministerial priesthood is priest and victim in his life of prayer. Pope Benedict XVI shares with us that the essential foundation of priestly ministry is a deep bond to Jesus Christ. Everything hinges on this bond, and the heart of all preparation for the priesthood and of all continuing priestly formation must be an introduction to it. The priest must be a man who knows Jesus intimately, who has encountered him, and learned to love him... The man called to the ministerial priesthood is priest and victim in his life of simplicity. While diocesan priests make no vow of poverty, the evangelical council of simplicity of life should be close to our hearts. Our only prize possession is Jesus Christ His spiritual poverty, and if He should call us to it, actual poverty; His experience of contumely and contempt; His humility. A man who is both priest and victim ought not to be a hired hand who has sense of a smell for money, but a shepherd who has the odor of the sheep, as Pope Francis exhorts us (Francis, 2013). The man called to the ministerial priesthood is priest and victim in his life of chastity in the celibate state. The priest is not a bachelor. He stands in the person of Christ as the bridegroom of the Church. He is answerable to and responsible for his beloved. This spousal reality is not experienced in simply a broad and generic sense, but in the very specific primary mission entrusted to the individual priest s care. He is to give to that community a spousal heart. Like any husband, he is to guard his heart in chastity not only physical chastity but emotional chastity as well. There may be other settings that desire his ministerial gifts, even lesser assignments given by the Church - but the priest must know where he lives and must give an undivided heart to the primary community entrusted to his care. The man called to the ministerial priesthood is priest and victim in his life of obedience. In obedience there is freedom. In obedience there is life. In obedience there is the surest path toward holiness. We cannot fathom the graces that flow for us when we enter the school of obedience, accepting ourselves as humbly and wholly under the authority of another in the midst of the Church, Catholic and Hierarchical. Pope Francis says to us obedience to the Church in the hierarchy which gives us, as it were, not simply the external framework of our obedience: the parish to which I am sent, my ministerial assignments, my particular work... but union with God the Father, the source of all fatherhood.
