2 Pastor s Moment By Pastor Jim This month I m going to continue talking about worship and more specifically, what the terminology we use really means. I find that the better informed about structure and methodology I am, the more meaningful things are for me. Last month, I talked about what worship is and why it falls during the week on Sunday. This is not to say worshipping corporately on another day is wrong, because it s not. What I am referring to is Sunday morning worship because that s the most common time for Protestant denominations to gather. Outside of our worship time is announcements on the screen that run until 10:25. At that point, we start a 5 minute countdown so that everyone can prepare to worship. As you read this, remember everything in worship points toward God. The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. (Matthew 13:44) Prelude- is the start of worship. It s a time of silence, where talking ceases and we let the music draw us into the presence of God. We use it as a noun and means a piece that precedes a greater movement. Call To Worship - worship is not about inspiring or motivating us (although we may be inspired and motivated) but is about loving God for God s sake. The call to worship, then, grabs our attention and beckons us to focus on God. It reminds us why God is praiseworthy and deserving of our worship. This is done in the form of a litany where there is a leader and respondents (congregation). Opening Hymn - is song of praise. We have started with a congregational responsive reading and now move to acknowledge God in a song of praise. Opening Prayer - is part invocation (prayer which calls upon God to provide aid, protection or inspiration) and part praise. It also can have words that express our sinful nature. Scripture Reading - reading of God s word to remind us that the Bible is for all of us to read and interpret. Children s Moment - a time with the children to talk about the scripture reading in a way that they would understand. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3...
3 PASTOR S MOMENT CONTINUED... Time of Prayer - is a time for the congregation to lift up joys and concerns. Following the joys and concerns, the pastor will pray and sometimes conclude with the Lord s Prayer. Apostles Creed or Nicene Creed - is a creed that is recited that acknowledges God as Trinity (three in one); Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Lord s Prayer - is modeled after the prayer that Jesus taught the disciples when they asked him how to pray. (Luke 11:1-4) Choir or Special Music - music sung or performed that doesn t point to those singing or playing an instrument but again points us toward God as a person or persons use their gift of music. Offering - a time where we give our tithe (the church uses the Old Testament example of 10% of your income). In the Old Testament, the first 10% of your harvest would be given to God. It is also a time where we can also present an offering which is above and beyond the normal tithe. Doxology - a hymn glorifying God, usually starting with Glory be to the Father. Centering Song - much like the prelude that draws you into God s presence, the Centering Song draws you into a place that readies your heart to receive the Message. Message - centered on the scripture that was read in the early part of the service, the message points to God s work among his people and ends with a word of hope. Closing Hymn - using the essence of the message and our time of corporate worship, the closing hymn is a song that sends you out into the world to do God s work. Benediction - much like the closing hymn is a song that sends you out, the benediction is a blessing on those in worship as they go into the world to do God s work. Postlude - is music played to close our time of worship. Congregants remain seated until the postlude is completed. During this time the pastor or pastors would depart and prepare to greet those leaving the sanctuary. The acolytes bring the light of Christ into the worship service to remind us that Jesus is the light of the world. The candles on the altar or table are then lit. At the end of the service they return the light of Christ to their candlelighters, extinguish the light of Christ on the candles, and then process out, symbolizing that we are to take the light out into the world. Please feel free to come talk to me about any questions or thoughts you might have about our worship time.

5 Administrative Position After some discussion at the SPRC meeting on May 28 th, it was decided to postpone filling the administrative position that Cassandra has held for the past few years. Currently, the church is behind in paying bills that are due. SPRC will revisit the position at some later date. What that means for now, though, is that the church needs volunteers to help with the areas of the administrative assistant position that have been deemed priorities. The areas are: Bulletin: Typing, copying, folding weekly worship bulletin including inserts. Newsletter: (The Flame) Typing, copying, addressing monthly newsletter. Calendar: Monthly calendar that lists all the activities for the upcoming month (currently in MS Word but could be in MS Publisher) Office Staff: Be physically present in the office 15 hours per week. Answering the telephone, directing calls, taking messages, assisting callers with needs to the extent possible. Acting as receptionist, receiving those who come into the church office and assisting them to the extent possible. Electronic media: Maintain electronic media (Facebook and ). None of these times or tasks need be handled by one person. All of the tasks can be handled by multiple people (especially office hours). Please talk to or call Pat Griffith at if God is calling you to use your gifts in this area of service in the church. Dear Families,. We are so grateful for the love and dedication from our Sunday morning children/youth discipleship leaders this past school year. In order to continue to ensure that they are able to give their all during the school year, they will be taking a break for the summer. The last day of discipleship group for the 2017/18 school year for our prek-12 th grade students will be Sunday May 27 th. Please encourage your kids to give their leaders a BIG THANK YOU for all they taught them about God s love for them this past school year. We hope and pray that your children will join us for Vacation Bible School, check out a week of summer camp and be with us in the pews on Sunday mornings. If your kids are participating in any summer reading programs, encourage them to spend some of that time reading the bible/bible story books. Check out the choice of books in our church library! ~Pastor Becky~

Summer weekend dates: Girls Flight 129 Thursday June 21-Sunday June 24 Boys Flight 130 Thursday July 19-Sunday July 22 What is Chrysalis? Chrysalis is a weekend experience of Christian spiritual renewal and formation that begins with a three-day short course in Christianity. It is an opportunity to meet Jesus Christ in a new way as God s grace and love is revealed to you through other believers. Who should go to Chrysalis? Chrysalis is open to members of any Christian denomination. Chrysalis is for the development of Christian leaders who: Have a desire to strengthen their spiritual lives; May have unanswered questions about faith; Understand that being a Christian involves responsibility; Are willing to dedicate their everyday lives to God in an ongoing manner. What happens on a Chrysalis weekend? You will enjoy three days of singing, learning, laughing, worshiping, reflecting, praying and participating in small groups. Discussions center around 15 talks given by youth, adults and clergy. These talks present the theme of God s grace, how that grace comes alive in the Christian community and how it is expressed in the world. You ll also discover how grace is real in your life, how you live a life of grace and how you bring that grace to others.
