2 REFORMATION 500 October 29, 2017 Commemorating the 500 th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation For by grace you have been saved through faith. 3 OCTOBER A TIME TO REMEMBER AND CELEBRATE! The date was October 31, A humble monk and professor from a little university in Germany nailed 95 statements on the church door at Wittenberg for the purpose of discussing what he saw were practices that were not consistent with Biblical teaching. Martin Luther intended his 95 statements (or theses) to be a spark whereby theologians in the Roman Catholic Church could help change some abuses that had arisen in the church. God, however, blew on this spark and started a purifying fire in His Church that would later be termed The Reformation. The Reformation is an event not only close to the hearts of Lutheran Christians but all Protestant Christianity. It is from the Reformation that we clarified four major truths of the Christian Faith Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Scripture Alone and Christ Alone. Grace Alone There is only one way that sinful men and women can be saved and have life with the One True God Father, Son and Holy Spirit and that is by GRACE ALONE! We don t earn it, we certainly don t deserve it, but God in His GRACE (His Underserved Love for Us in His Son, Jesus Christ) freely gives it to us. Faith Alone How does a person receive this new life of GRACE? Only through Faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior! FAITH is the hand that receives all the blessings God the Father longs to give us because of what Jesus Christ has done for us. The amazing thing is that even this FAITH is a gift from God created in our hearts by the power of the Holy Spirit. Scripture Alone We know this is true because as we learned as children the Bible tells me so. Scripture Alone is the basis of all that we as Lutheran Christians teach, preach and confess. While church leaders and councils can err, God s Word Alone is certain and true and will stand firm forever! Christ Alone Jesus said, No one comes to the Father but by me. He also said, I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. It is only through faith in Jesus Christ that we receive the forgiveness of our sins and the gift of eternal life. As we celebrate the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation this month, we will go back to the basics focus on the truths that reformed the Christian Church Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Scripture Alone and Christ Alone. On Reformation Sunday, October 29, we will have two worship services celebrating the 500 Anniversary of the Reformation; one at 8:00 a.m. (in the sanctuary) and one at 10:30 a.m. (in the Family Life Center). It is a time for us to thank God for His faithfulness, praise Him for His goodness and proclaim that after 500 years it still is all about Jesus. Have a Happy Reformation! Pastor Jon 3

4 CHRISTMAS IS COMING! It is going to be another hot day. The weather man said this morning, It feels more like mid August than late September and early Fall. So while it may not feel very Fall-like outside and it certainly doesn t feel very Christmasy outside, the truth is Christmas Eve is 88 days and 15 hours away (as I write these words). For some of you that is the last thing you want to hear. For others (if you are like me) those words cause you to break out into your happy dance. Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday this year which provides a unique opportunity. In the past several years we have seen that more and more people prefer to go to church on Christmas Eve earlier rather than later. At least, that is what the worship numbers indicate as our 4:00 p.m. service has been our biggest for the past few years. Last year as Christmas Eve fell on a Saturday we moved our 4:00 p.m. service to 3:00 p.m. and it grew even larger. With that in mind, please note that on Christmas Eve this year we will offer four services: two early and two a little later. The schedule will be as follows: 10:00 a.m. (in the sanctuary) with children s choir and bells 3:00 p.m. (in the sanctuary) with adult choir 6:00 p.m. (in the AFLC) our contemporary Christmas service 9:00 p.m. (in the sanctuary) with orchestra and Holy Communion Please note that all of these services will include singing Silent Night by candlelight. Have a great day in the Lord! I think I m going to go and listen to a little Christmas music. Pastor Jon MORE FROM PASTOR JON I have mentioned this repeatedly over the past several weeks but it is worth saying again: I have never been more proud to be one of your pastors than I have in light of your response to Hurricane Harvey. I have seen God s people rise up as one and support those who have been hit by the flooding Harvey brought to S.E. Texas. From people helping to tear out flooring and sheet rock, to those who provided meals for victims and volunteers, to those who gave financial and prayer support I have been amazed at your show of love. While I can t thank all of you personally, because I simply don t know everything you have done, I would like to say a collective I thank God for you! Continue to shine your light so that, in the words of Jesus, people may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. In Christ s Love, Pastor Jon 4
