3 HAVE AN EXTRAORDINARY CHRISTMAS! It was an ordinary sleepy night. The sheep were huddled together for the evening. The shepherds were doing what shepherds do in the middle of the night while the sheep were sleeping the night away and then boom! An explosion, a bright light and the ordinary became extraordinary. In the midst of the routine life of these shepherds from Bethlehem the glory of the Lord was revealed and it changed the shepherd s lives. To these terrified shepherds, an angel of the Lord brought good news of great joy that was meant for all people. That good news, of course, was the birth of the King of kings and Lord of lords, Jesus Christ our Savior. For over two thousand years the good news has transformed the ordinary into the extraordinary. This good news has changed the eternity of all who come to know Jesus as their Savior. It brings life from death, joy from sorrow, hope from despair, and delivers from sin, death and the power of the Devil. No wonder it is called good news! In fact, it is the very best news and it continues to change lives today. Sadly, we often miss out on the joy of this good news because we lose focus. Our lives become filled with so many other things this time of year that we become overwhelmed, frustrated, exhausted and burned out. I invite you to slow down this Christmas Season (No I m not kidding!) and take time to spend time with Jesus. Wednesday services at 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. are great midweek spiritual pick-me-ups. And, of course, being the in the Lord s House on Sunday is the best way to start the week. Whether you are new to our church family, have been around since the beginning or may have slipped into the unhealthy habit of not worshiping the Lord, this good news of great joy is meant for you. Join us as we focus on the good news of great joy so that in our ordinary routines, in our ordinary lives, the love of God might work the extraordinary. In Christ s Love, Pastor Jon SPEAKING OF GOOD NEWS! This will be our 25 st Christmas together at Epiphany. Time does fly when you are having fun and I have had lots of fun over the years. I pray that you have had some too. More than that I pray that we have all been changed as we have experienced the love of our Lord Jesus! Thank you for the memories we ve made together and the ones we are yet to make by the grace of God! Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Your servants and fellow co-workers in Christ, Pastor Jon, Pastor David, Pastor Dan, Debbie, Cindy, Dorian, Beth, Chase, Larry, Patsy and Fred 3
4 THE GIVING TREE It s time to support Epiphany s Annual Giving Tree. You can choose your tag from two different trees - one in the narthex and one in the AFLC. Each tag will have a gift idea for a child, an adult or a basic need for one of our organizations this year. We are partnering with Friendly Grounds in Oyster Creek, which is a volunteerled ministry in the Angleton area that gives the underprivileged community a place to meet for Bible Study. We are also partnering with Pearland ISD to support their Angel Tree. Finally, we will be providing a few comfort items for residents at Windsong Village Nursing Home in Pearland. The trees are up and lit with gift tags. Gifts will be due on Sunday morning, December 13 so the organizations can disperse gifts. Please consider supporting this important outreach opportunity. DIRECTIONS: 1. Select at least one tag from the trees located in the narthex or the AFLC gym. 2. Purchase the gift or gifts suggested on the tag. 3. PLEASE DO NOT WRAP THE GIFTS! 4. Please return all gifts by Sunday, December 13. If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Ward. 4

Todd and Pam Van Maaren are the parade organizers for Epiphany and are planning a "candy-coated gingerbread house" and musically festive float. They will need plenty of help. If you are interested in helping or walking with the float or riding on it, please contact Todd or Pam at ToddVM@att.net or as soon as possible. Thanks for your help! 10 USE YOUR BILL PAY FOR YOUR SUNDAY OFFERING Ever show up on Sunday and realize you forgot your offering? We found a simple solution that might be more convenient for your family. Consider going through your bank s bill pay. Call the church office and we can assign you a contribution number to enter as an account number. Then you can do a one time, monthly or even weekly payment. You can be sure that your contributions will be properly recorded and quarterly statements are generated so that you can verify that your donations are correct. We have many members who are doing this with great success. There are no charges to you or to the church when you go through your own bank. Call Debbie at for help setting this up OFFERING ENVELOPES - THERE WILL BE CHANGES We are going to be reassigning some envelope numbers in 2016 in order to fill in the gaps that have occurred from members transferring and those who are using bill pay. If you never used your 2015 envelopes, call Debbie in the church office at by Friday, December 18 so she can assign you a contribution record number that you can write on your loose check. This will help us assess how many envelope sets we will need to order in 2017 and reduce waste. LOOK FOR YOUR 2016 OFFERING ENVELOPES IN YOUR MAILBOX LATER THIS MONTH! 1. Please do not use these until January If you like giving your check without using the envelope, just return the box and we will assign you a new offering number for White envelopes are for the general fund only. 4. If you are giving for a fund other than offerings, please write two checks. Every fund must be counted separately. 5. Please put your envelope number or assigned offering number on your check. 6. When using your envelope, please write the amount on the envelope. 7. Your counters thank you. CONTRIBUTIONS Year End Contributions: Donors must deliver or mail (and postmark) checks on or by December 31, 2015 in order to claim a charitable contribution deduction for Checks that are placed in the church offering during the first worship service in 2016 will not qualify for a charitable contribution deduction in 2015, even if the check is backdated to 2015 or was actually written in Deducting church contributions: To ensure the deductibility of your church contributions, please do not file your 2015 income tax return until you have received a written acknowledgment of your contributions from the church. Some of your contributions may not be tax-deductible if you file your tax return before receiving a written acknowledgement of your contributions from the church. 10

16 Reach, Inspire, Support, Empower Epiphany is supporting Pearland ISD s RISE Mentoring Program. RISE Mentoring brings together caring, committed adults from across the community to serve as another support for our students as they work to rise to success in school and in life. Several Epiphany members and staff are already serving as RISE Mentors. It is a wonderful opportunity to make a positive impact in the life of a child. You can even request the age and/or school of the child. PISD currently has over 70 children who are waiting to be matched with a mentor. Can you help? What are the qualifications? You don t need special skills just a willingness to listen and show you care. Volunteer 30 minutes per week to meet with a student at his/her campus. Complete a volunteer background check and mentor application. Attend an orientation/training session. Upcoming orientation dates: Wednesday, December 2 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 10 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 5 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Be a good listener and encourage your mentee. Be dependable, providing stability and inspiring trust. For more information or to register, go to the RISE link at Epiphany would also like to connect all of our RISE mentors with a prayer partner. Please contact Beth Milbrath at beth@epiphanypearland.org or Chase Drake at chase@epiphanypearland.org if you would like to be a mentor or prayer partner. 16
