2 Volume 59 Issue 9 Page 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ! October is the month we celebrate the Reformation. Luther wanted the Church to focus more on the gospel. The church in his day was more focused on works and what you do instead of what God gives. The good news of Jesus life, death and resurrection for us was not what he was hearing in the churches. They preached more Law than gospel or mixed the Law with gospel without any distinction. One of the biggest problems in Luther s day was the selling of indulgences to get out of purgatory. This is similar to TV Evangelists who sell prayer cloths and trinkets for health, wealth, and salvation, which we know is not Christian or scriptural at all. God s grace is a free gift. You do not buy salvation or God s love and favor at all. God is love. God so loved the world that he gave his son for us. There were three slogans that explained the Reformation message and Lutheranism: Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, and Sola Scriptura. Sola Gratia-Grace alone means that a person receives salvation as a gift. Sola Fide-By faith alone means that a person becomes righteous solely through an act of trust in Christ apart from the works of the law. Sola Scriptura-Scripture alone means the Bible is the final standard and norm that church teaching is judged. The scriptures point us to the core Solus Christus- Christ alone that is the basis for our salvation. We focus on the gospel of Jesus Christ when we gather around word and sacraments! Bible Study Don t forget about our couples bible study on Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm All are invited to join in this bible study. If you have any questions, please see Rhonda Klase. THANK YOU, CANDY RUSINOWSKI! Did you know that Candy Rusinowski has been putting our weekly bulletins together for years? Yes...it s true! After the bulletin has been printed, Candy picks them up and puts them together and staples them, and puts inserts in.this takes a considerable amount of time. AND, she does this out of the love of her church and God Just another one of the special volunteers behind the scenes! The Time and Talent Sheet coordinates volunteer work within the congregation. Do not be overwhelmed by the many opportunities to volunteer. We can never have enough volunteers and it is a great way to get to know people within the church. The more volunteers we have the fewer times you may be called upon. If you need a new sheet or need to update your old one they will be available in a future newsletter and in the narthex. The Membership List consists of all members: Active and Inactive. In the weekly bulletin you will see the Bethel Attendance Sheet. Please fill this out. This Attendance Sheet is used for Accurate Attendance which has to be included in the Synod Annual Report. It is also a way to update your information and allow us to see to your concerns. If we don t see you for a while, you may receive a phone call or a letter to see if you are okay. A Membership letter was sent out this summer to folks we have not seen in a while. NEEDED: Volunteers are needed to serve on communion groups to PREPARE communion for church services. We have 4 groups, so you would only serve 3 times a year. Join us for some Fall Fun on Saturday, October 20, 2018! We will be having a picture scavenger hunt, pizza, apple cider, donuts, and we will be painting pumpkins afterward! Meet at the church at 2:00 p.m. where we will be breaking off in teams for our scavenger hunt! Then, back to church for viewing our pictures and doing the rest of our activities! All age groups and parents are welcome to participate and drive to our scavenger hunt destination! See Beth Applegate for flyer and details. 6 Volume 58 Issue 9 P A G E 6 IMPORTANT UPCOMING DATES AND INFORMATION: There is no better time than in this year of celebrating the Reformation to review the catechism. Read it for yourself. Refresh the theology in your mind. Pray the catechism daily. Memorize it. But even more, teach it. If you are a parent, teach it to your children. As you have opportunity, share it with your friends and peers. The catechism teaches the fundamentals of the Christian faith: the Ten Commandments, the Apostles Creed, the Lord s Prayer, the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, Confession and the Office of the Keys, and the Sacrament of the Altar. This small book is well worth your time and study. May this Reformation be a time when we return to Word and Sacrament, and when we turn to Christ and His love. It s Still All About Jesus. Save the Date! The Cookie Walk will be held on Saturday, December 15th. We will be making Clothespin Cookies on Wednesday, December 12th. We will be raising the price of cookies to $7 a dozen because people acted like they were free last year! Cookies will also be used for Shut-Ins and anything the youth or choir have planned. WELCA will be happy to reimburse you for the cost of your ingredients. We could also plan another baking day or night since it is more fun to work together.
