To Protect All Life! Commitment to Life, Charity, & Justice The Beatitudes Reflect on the Beatitudes (on handout) Share with one other person how this may fit in your life. Our Parish How am I being called? What are the needs: In our parish In our community In our world ( If time allows) How should our parish respond: 1. ( Ponder for future discussion.) 2. Where God is calling me? - 3 -

Rules: Oppression vs Freedom Modern Culture and Rules Restrict personal autonomy Exercise of oppressive power Sovereignty of Christ Jesus as Lord St. Paul and Christian Freedom Freedom from Freedom for THE TEN COMMANDMENTS - 5 -
Rebuilt: Awakening the Faithful, Reaching the Lost, Making Church Matter Fr. Robert Barron It s All About the Weekend Experience (youtube.com/watch?v=2m6ymoskq7a) Idolatry: A Commentary (youtube.com/watch?v=fwieozhyrqc) - 6 -
The 10 Commandments 1 st Commandment: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them. (Ex 20:2-5a) God alone is worthy of our worship. What is God jealous of in my life? 2 nd Commandment: You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. (Ex 20:7) How we speak affects how we think. How has my speech negatively impacted my orientation to the holy? 3 rd Commandment: Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work. (Ex 20:8-10) We must practice the 1st Commandment in order to maintain it. What is keeping me from fully participating in the Church s worship of God? - 7 -
The Precepts of the Church The precepts of the Church are set in the context of a moral life bound to and nourished by liturgical life. The obligatory character of these positive laws decreed by the pastoral authorities is meant to guarantee to the faithful the very necessary minimum in the spirit of prayer and moral effort, in the growth in love of God and neighbor. (CCC n. 2041) 1. You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor. (CCC n. 2042) 2. You shall confess your sins at least once a year. (CCC n. 2042) 3. You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season. (CCC n. 2042) 4. You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church. (CCC n. 2043) 5. You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church. (CCC n. 2043) Christ Pentocrator, Cathedral of Cefalù (Sicily); photo by Gun Powder Ma - 8 -
Personal Reflection What precept(s) do I find easy to follow? Have I struggled with any precepts in the past? How did I overcome that obstacle? Which precepts do I currently struggle with? Why? - 9 -
Rebuilt: Awakening the Faithful, Reaching the Lost, Making Church Matter Fr. Robert Barron It s All About the Weekend Experience (youtube.com/watch?v=2m6ymoskq7a) Idolatry: A Commentary (youtube.com/watch?v=fwieozhyrqc)

Table Reflection If we expect others to fulfill their obligation to worship the Lord on Sundays and holy days of obligations, are we creating and environment and experience in which people feel welcomed? What obstacles might discourage visitors and seekers from attending Mass at your parish? How can these obstacles be overcome?
