Secret of Sanctity I am going to reveal to you the secret of sanctity and happiness. Every day for five minutes control your imagination and close your eyes to the things of sense and your ears to all the noises of the world, in order to enter into yourself. Then, in the sanctity of your baptized soul (which is the temple of the Holy Spirit) speak to that Divine Spirit, saying to Him: Oh, Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul. I adore you. Enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me, console me. Tell me what I should do. Give me Your orders. I promise to submit myself to all that You desire of me and to accept all that You permit to happen to me. Let me only know Your will. If you do this, your life will flow along happily, serenely and full of consolation, even in the midst of trials. Grace will be proportioned to the trial, giving you the strength to carry it and you will arrive at the gate of Paradise, laden with merit. This submission to the Holy Spirit is the secret of sanctity. 4 Youth & Young Adult Ministry **JR High Youth Ministry Change** After much consideration and discussion with staff, I have decided to move the time of JR High Ministry from 12-2pm to 10:30am-11:45am beginning in the fall in line with the elementary formation program. The JR High Ministry will remain similar to this year s program with the exception of lunch being provided. The hope with this change is to allow more family time on Sunday, considering some families have students in each level of ministry. It will also open the door to more individuals who would like to volunteer for the JR High program (fyi, we could use some helpers who feel a call to assist with the ministry). If you have any comments or questions about this change, please contact me but I believe this will be in the best interest of the program as a whole. Confirmation Info Meeting May 20th 10:30am Room 8 This meeting is for students and their parents who are anticipating the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation in the Spring of This is a mandatory informational meeting that will provide students and parents with diocesan requirements, a schedule for formation classes, and help answer any questions concerning the process of Confirmation. Students entering high school in the fall are encouraged to attend which is different from previous years. We have decided to lower the age minimum to freshmen year in high school, but will still be confirming every other year as a parish. Please contact Katie if you have any questions or concerns. May Mother Mary and our Lord continue to bless you. Baby Bottles for Birthright Please have your baby bottles returned by May 20th. If writing a check, please make it out to Birthright of Peru. Thank you Sunday Stewardship Reflection The Ascension of the Lord We often cite Jesus quote from today s Gospel of Mark: Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. This was not a suggestion from the Lord. It was quite frankly a command, and it is one which still holds for each of us. Being an evangelist, being a disciple, being a steward is not a matter of choice for those of us who are Catholic and Christian. It is something the Lord expects of us. Often we may like to spend time debating how to do that, but that does not lessen the fact that it is something we are supposed to do. We need to acknowledge that even the original Apostles and followers of Jesus did not do that immediately. We learn that they stayed in Jerusalem for some time, and it seemed to be only when the Church and its followers were persecuted that they began to reach out and truly share the Good News. Once Christians accepted that charge from the Lord, they did indeed take the Word of God to all corners of the earth. Look at the Church today. It is incredible how this Church has grown from one Man/God and a small group into what it is today. That does not, however, get us off the hook. As much as we may argue about how to carry out this command from Jesus, the fact remains that our very lives need to stand as a representation of what it means to be a Christian, what it means to love one another, what it means to live and to work as a disciple of Christ.

5 Pardon Our Dust Beginning on Monday (5/14), we will be working to replace the dilapidated sidewalks to the South and West of our school building (parish offices). Demolition of the existing sidewalks should only take a couple days, and then hopefully within a week the concrete will be poured. During construction, please use the East entrance (parking lot between the church and school) to our offices in our school. The following week (5/21), work will then begin on the sidewalks to the South of our beautiful church. After reviewing a number of smaller projects with our buildings and grounds committee, along with our parish finance council, it was agreed that it was time for the yellow paint to go (that is how we ve been marking the many hazards for years)! During the replacement of the church sidewalks, please use the West vestibule to enter/exit the church. Thank you in advance to the City of Peru who will be taking care of demolition, and to Terry Brooks who will be forming, pouring, and finishing our new sidewalks. The most dramatic improvement will be made at the corner of 5th Street and Cass Street, where handicapped accessible ramps will be installed for the safety and accessibility of our visitors, neighbors and community. Fruitful Harvest 2016 As we come to a close in the current diocesan appeal, Fruitful Harvest 2016 Stewards of Christ Sharing Our Gifts, please remember if you have a current pledge balance that all gifts must be received and posted no later than September 1, 2018 in the Fruitful Harvest Office. St. Charles Goal: $111, Pledged: $126, Paid: $114, As we published last weekend, we have fortunately exceeded our diocesan goal and have also already received a rebate check from the diocese. Thank you for your continued stewardship and prayers to your parish and the Local Church. God bless, Fr. Adam Thanks to Our Advertiser of the Week Jay V. Lewis, DDS Ask the Apologist Dear Apologist, Mary is the mother of Jesus, but how is Mary our mother? The role of Mary in our spiritual life is often a sticking point between Catholics and non-catholic Christians. It is important to remember that Mary s motherhood is a Biblical fact. One place to look is John s Gospel. Throughout his Gospel, John uses the title the disciple whom Jesus loved to refer to himself. This moniker invites us to enter the Gospel as a participant in the events which are recorded. In John s Passion account, he recalls Jesus seeing Mary and himself from the cross and saying to Mary, Behold, your son. Then He says to the beloved disciple, Behold, your mother [John 19:26]. This was not simply to assure us that Mary would be well taken care of as if Jesus had forgotten to make this arrangement beforehand. Rather, Jesus statement describes the new relationship we have with His mother. A second place is the twelfth chapter of Revelation, in which John reflects on the role of Mary. He sees her give birth to Jesus, flee into the wilderness, and receive special protection against the efforts of the devil. At the end of that chapter, John observes the devil becoming frustrated at his inability to reach the woman. Instead, Satan resolves to make war on the rest of the woman s children, whom John identifies as all Christians. [Rev 12:17] The motherhood of Mary is important because it shows an aspect of the Gospel that goes beyond the salvation of our souls. Both Paul and John tell us that Christ brings us into the family of God [Eph 1:5, 1John 3:1]. Through Christ, we become adopted sons and daughter of God, Jesus becomes our older brother, and Mary becomes our blessed mother.
