WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD Gathering Time Hymn 484 Out of Deep, Unordered Water Hymn 164 Down Galilee s Slow Roadways Greeting, Welcome, and Opportunities for Discipleship Welcome to our guests and visitors! As a church of hospitality we invite you, if you feel comfortable, to introduce yourself at this time. We are glad you are here. We hope you will fill out the welcome pad (found in the pew holder) to help us get acquainted. We also invite you to join us in Westminster Hall for Coffee Hour following worship. Everyone please silence your cell phones. Prelude Chaconne Young Call to Worship God anointed Christ to console the afflicted. Come, let us worship the Lord our Comforter! God anointed Christ to emancipate the enslaved. Come, let us worship the Lord our liberator! God anointed Christ to bind up the wounded. Come, let us worship the Lord our healer! God anointed Christ to deliver the troubled. Come, let us worship the Lord our Savior! Invocation *Hymn 664 *Call to Confession Morning Has Broken (During the singing of the hymn, please pass Joys & Concerns to center aisle.) *Prayer of Confession God of glory, we confess that we have not sought your face. We adore the high and mighty and ignore your humble servant. We act with prejudice and partiality and fail to share your love for all. Forgive us; give us grace. Pour out the power of your Spirit and renew us in our calling: to show the wonder of your love in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. *Silent Confession (A time for personal confession of sin)
*Assurance of Forgiveness Hear the good news! God loves us. God forgives us. Response Service of Renewal of Baptism Sentences of Scripture Renunciation and Affirmation I ask you, therefore, once again to reject sin, to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, and to confess the faith of the church, the faith in which we were baptized. Trusting in the gracious mercy of God, do you turn from the ways of sin and renounce evil and its power in the world? I do. Who is your Lord and Savior? Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. Will you be Christ s faithful disciple, obeying his Word and showing his Love? I will, with God s help. As a sign of our connection to the historic faith of the Church, please stand and join in reciting our ancient creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Church universal, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Remembering Our Baptism Hymn 491 *Passing of the Peace Having received Christ s peace, let us share it by turning to our neighbors and greeting them, saying May the peace of Christ be with you! Prayer for Illumination Scripture Readings Genesis 1:1-5 p. 1 Mark 1:4-11 p. 34 The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. WE HEAR THE WORD OF GOD Sermon A Call and An Invitation The Rev. William T. Hennessy WE RESPOND AND GIVE THANKS TO GOD Anthem Come to the Water Foley Prayers of the People Call to Discipleship BackPack Program Offering Offertory: Chorale Young *Doxology (Hymn 607) Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ, all people here below; Praise Holy Spirit evermore; Praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen. *Prayer of Thanksgiving and The Lord s Prayer The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise. and now we pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. WE DISPERSE TO SERVE GOD IN THE WORLD *Hymn 493 Now There Is No Male or Female *Charge *Benediction *Congregational Amen Hymn 568 *Postlude Finale Busarow *Those who are able, please stand.

Adult Education January 11 and 18, and February 1 Embracing Forgiveness: What Forgiveness Is and What It Isn t/library In this DVD study and discussion, storyteller Barbara Crafton explores what forgiveness is not and then what it is and how to find it in our lives, both in the personal and on the communal levels. Warm, honest, realistic and practical, Embracing Forgiveness offers tonic for troubled souls 9:30 am in the Library Bible Study/Resource Center We will be studying the Acts of the Apostles. All are welcome. No preparation or document purchases are required. Like last year, the leadership of the sessions will rotate, voluntarily, among the attendees. Bible Study on Thursdays: Sustaining Hope Join us for Bible study in the library at 12:30pm on Thursdays, beginning January 15. Come weekly, or when you are able. We will bring our bag lunches and eat together, followed by informal discussion from 1:00 to 2:00 with shared leadership. The first quarter we will be guided by studies from a Presbyterian adult study resource The Present Word titled Sustaining Hope, beginning with Jeremiah, chapters You need not prepare or bring anything but your lunch (and a favorite Bible, if you like, but there are Bibles in the library). Let Laughter Bind Us Together! You ve heard the adage Laughter is the best medicine! Studies show that laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain and conflict. This month after all the stress of the holidays and the cold weather is the perfect time for you and your whole family to come to a free event where all you have to do is LAUGH and PLAY! Whether you ve thought of yourself as creative or not, you are! Come and learn how using improvisation can unlock the happiness that is within you! This free, improv workshop with Drew Ludwig, pastor of Lafayette Ave. Presbyterian Church in Buffalo, will be held on Wednesday, January 21, at 7pm, in Westminster Hall. There will be dessert and beverages.
Rev. Ludwig is also a performer with Buffalo ComedySportz, Buffalo s longest-running improv group. Pastor Ludwig will teach you the fundamentals of improvisational comedy and help you put them to use in living a faithful and happy life. You will be invited to learn through participation in simple, safe activities of your choosing. Entertainers such as Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler cite improv as more than training for acting and writing, but also as a key part of their outlook on life. There are many ways you can register to attend: online at n.church@verizon.net, call the church office at , or sign up in Westminster Hall. Wednesday Book Groups Check out the books at Morning The group meets monthly at 10:00 on Wednesday mornings. All are invited. The book for January 21, 2015, is Helen Smith s Men on Strike: Why Men Are Boycotting Marriage, Fatherhood, and the American Dream and Why It Matters (2013). Dr. Helen Smith, a psychologist, argues that American society has become anti-male. Men are sensing the backlash and are consciously and unconsciously going on strike. They are dropping out of college, leaving the workforce and avoiding marriage and fatherhood at alarming rates. But why should men participate in a system that seems to be increasingly stacked against them? " If we as women allow injustice to men today, who knows what will happen to us tomorrow?. Bill Bryson s narrative nonfiction, titled One Summer: America 1927 (2014), documents what he calls a transitional period in American history--the most extraordinary summer of 1927, when the twentieth century truly became the American century. It includes the world of Capone, Jack Dempsey, Al Jolson, Herbert Hoover, Lindbergh s flight, Babe Ruth s 60, Mickey Mouse, the Mississippi River flood, and bootlegging. This is the reading for February 18. Afternoon The January book is Little Princes by Conor Grennan. For Grennan, It was supposed to be the short stint good deed that would justify his yearlong, footloose, global joyride. Instead, it
turned into a longtime commitment. When 29-year-old Conor began as a temporary volunteer at Nepal's Little Princes Children's Home, he thought that he would be working with orphans. What he discovered was even more heart-wrenching: The youngsters at the Kathmandu home were actually pawns in a cynical child trafficking scheme; supposedly guided to safety during the Nepali civil war by con artists who extracted huge sums from their poor villager parents. Grennan dropped his extended vacation plans and began a dangerous quest to reunite the abandoned children with their parents. The library has several copies so we invite you to read the book and join us for a great discussion in the library at 1 pm on January 28. If you want to get a head start on the February book, it is Once We Were Brothers, by Ronald Balson, the gripping tale about two boys, once as close as brothers, who find themselves on opposite sides of the Holocaust. Once We Were Brothers is Ronald H. Balson's compelling tale of two boys and a family who struggle to survive in war-torn Poland, and a young love that struggles to endure the unspeakable cruelty of the Holocaust. Two lives, two worlds, and 60 years converge in an explosive race to redemption that makes for a moving and powerful tale of love, survival, and ultimately the triumph of the human spirit. It is available in the library or in paperback. Join us on February 25 for our discussion. Learn to Lead How to lead a small group Bible study will be offered January 24, 2015, from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, at Kenmore United Church of Christ, 295 Delaware Rd, Kenmore. The Massachusetts Bible Society has a proven Bible study system that even those who know little about the Bible can learn to lead. In this six-hour workshop, you will learn the basics of leading a small group, build confidence in leading a Bible study, learn how to use as well as receive a free copy of course #1 in Exploring the Bible: The Dickinson Series, receive tips on recruiting your first group.
