Bill Hennessy WE RESPOND AND GIVE THANKS TO GOD *Affirmation of Faith We believe in God whose love is the source of all life and the desire of our lives, whose love was given a human face in Jesus of Nazareth, whose love was crucified by the evil that waits to enslave us all, and whose love, defeating even death, is our glorious promise of freedom. Therefore, though we are sometimes fearful and full of doubt, we trust in God; and, in the name of Jesus Christ we commit ourselves, in the service of others, to seek justice and to live in peace, to care for the earth and to share the commonwealth of God s goodness, to live in the freedom of forgiveness and the power of the Spirit of love, and in the company of the faithful so to be the Church, for the glory of God. 6 Flowers Today The flowers today are given in loving memory of Mary Mohlke by her family. Convocation Today at Kenmore Presbyterian Church Today at 4:00 p.m. you can delight your ears and support more than a few of North s choir members who are singing in the American Guild of Organists (AGO) opening convocation at Kenmore Presbyterian Church, 2771 Delaware Ave. Neighboring churches and AGO members join for a service of installation and worship with bells and choir. A reception will follow. Dress-a-Girl Seamstresses, doll makers, ironers, cutters, and runners: come sew with us! We'll be meeting in Westminster Hall Monday, October 24, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Stay for the whole time or for as long as you can. Please bring a salad ingredient for our build-a-salad supper. Dessert and beverages will be provided. Friends of Night People: Message from Organizer I would like someone else to take over the responsibility for Friends of Night People (FONP). It involves organizing the volunteers for the 4th Tuesday of every month, taking the clothes that have been donated by the North Church family down to Friends at 394 Hudson St., Buffalo, as well as keeping things organized while we are serving. I have been volunteering at FONP for 20 years and organizing the volunteers for more than five years. I can help my replacement by sharing my list and advising where needed. Oct. 25th and Nov. 22nd are the remaining two days for this year. We typically do not cook or serve in December as there are many other donations brought into FONP during the holiday season. 7 Youth Fellowship North Church youth in grades 7 through 12 are invited to spend time with our Shared Youth Director Mack Barker on Sunday, October 30, from 10:45 a.m.-noon, in the north basement. Sunday Morning Adult Education 9:30 a.m., Library Divine Violence: Have you struggled with the seeming disconnect between the God of violence in Judges and Revelation and the God of nonviolence in Psalm 23 and the Gospels? John Dominic Crossan states: The biblical God is, on one hand, a God of nonviolent distributive justice and on the other hand, a God of violent retributive justice. How do we reconcile these two visions? For Crossan s answer and to craft your own, read his new book How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian or come to the DVD discussion series. Sunday Morning Adult Education Bible Study 9:30 a.m., Resource Center We have begun the fall season of the adult education Bible study The Parables of Jesus. The study leaders are volunteers. We are reading and discussing the parables of Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels. Books and study guides are not required. Come join us. Alternative Christmas Marketplace In just two weeks we will be holding our fifteenth annual Alternative Christmas Marketplace. This is an opportunity to give a seriously meaningful gift this holiday season. Come learn about 17 local, national and international non-profit organizations dedicated to helping those in need. Make a donation in the name of a friend or family member, and spread the word with an enclosure card describing your gift. Make this your first holiday party of the season. On Primary Day in April we held a very successful bake sale that raised just over $450 to help offset our budget deficit! Since record

8 voter attendance is predicted for the election on Nov 8, we could do even better! We will need lots of volunteers and lots of goodies to repeat our success. There will be sign-up sheets for baked goods and volunteer shifts in coffee hour and the Information Table in the narthex, or call Sue D'Angelo for more information. Men s Fellowship November Event: Author and Speaker in Lockport Noted author, speaker and independent scholar of American religion and culture Diana Butler Bass is the Kenan Speaker Series guest on Saturday, November 5 at 3:00 p.m. at the Kenan Center Taylor Theater in Lockport. She is the author of Grounded: Finding God in the World: A Spiritual Revolution, and Christianity after Religion. The Men s Fellowship are planning to attend this lecture as their November event. Panel on Opioid Epidemic Medaille College is hosting a panel on the Opioid epidemic, on Wednesday, October 26, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The panel includes representatives from law enforcement, treatment facilities, the health field, counselors, and others. The event is free and open to the public.
