WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD Gathering Time Hymn 157 I Danced in the Morning Hymn 633 Praise Ye the Lord (ps. 150) Greeting, Welcome, and Opportunities for Discipleship Welcome to our guests and visitors! We invite you, if you feel comfortable, to introduce yourself at this time. We are glad you are here. We hope you will fill out the friendship pad (in the pew holder) to help us get acquainted. We also invite you to join us in Westminster Hall for coffee hour. Everyone please silence your cell phones. Prelude Cantabile Uehlein Call to Worship Pour out your Spirit, O Lord; We call upon your name. Rain down your mercy, O God; We depend upon your grace. Let us worship God. Invocation *Hymn 402 How Lovely, Lord (During the singing of the hymn, please pass prayer requests to center aisle.) *Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession Merciful God, hope of your people in every age, we confess that we have sinned against you. We have wandered from your pathways, turned toward idols, lived without compassion, and disregarded the well-being of your creation. Do not turn away from us, O Lord, but renew your covenant, for only in you will our lives be healed. Guide us and lead us in your ways, for happy are those who live in your house. Amen. *Silent Confession
*Assurance of Forgiveness Hear the good news! God loves us. God forgives us. *Response Halle, Halle, Halleluja! Halle, Halle, Halleluja! Halleluja! Halleluja! Halleluja! Hymn # 591 (Refrain) *Passing of the Peace Having received Christ s peace, let us share it by turning to our neighbors and greeting them, saying May the peace of Christ be with you! Prayer for Illumination WE HEAR THE WORD OF GOD Scripture Readings Jeremiah 14:7-10, p.715 Anthem Two Men Betook Themselves to Pray in the Temple Schütz-Gore (Luke 18:10-14) Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. Sermon Standing in the Need of Prayer The Rev. Bill Hennessy WE RESPOND AND GIVE THANKS TO GOD *Affirmation of Faith We believe in God whose love is the source of all life and the desire of our lives, whose love was given a human face in Jesus of Nazareth, whose love was crucified by the evil that waits to enslave us all, and whose love, defeating even death, is our glorious promise of freedom. Therefore, though we are sometimes fearful and full of doubt, we trust in God; and, in the name of Jesus Christ we commit ourselves, in the service of others, to seek justice and to live in peace, to care for the earth and to share the commonwealth of God s goodness, to live in the freedom of forgiveness and the power of the Spirit of love, and in the company of the faithful so to be the Church, for the glory of God. Amen.( The Iona Community from The Iona Abbey Worship Book, published by Wild Goose Publications, Iona Community, Fourth Floor, Savoy House, 140 Sauchiehall St., Glasgow G2 3DH, UK)
*Hymn 415 Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy Prayers of the People Call to Discipleship Hurricane Relief Offering Offertory: Allegretto Schmid *Doxology Hymn 607 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise Christ, all people here below; praise Holy Spirit evermore; praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen. *Prayer of Thanksgiving and the Lord s Prayer The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. and now we pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. WE DISPERSE TO SERVE GOD IN THE WORLD *Hymn 848 Trust in God *Charge *Benediction *Congregational Amen Hymn 568 *Postlude Toccata in A Minor Sweelinck *Those who are able, please stand.

Flowers Today The flowers today are given in loving memory of Mary Mohlke by her family. Convocation Today at Kenmore Presbyterian Church Today at 4:00 p.m. you can delight your ears and support more than a few of North s choir members who are singing in the American Guild of Organists (AGO) opening convocation at Kenmore Presbyterian Church, 2771 Delaware Ave. Neighboring churches and AGO members join for a service of installation and worship with bells and choir. A reception will follow. Dress-a-Girl Seamstresses, doll makers, ironers, cutters, and runners: come sew with us! We'll be meeting in Westminster Hall Monday, October 24, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Stay for the whole time or for as long as you can. Please bring a salad ingredient for our build-a-salad supper. Dessert and beverages will be provided. Friends of Night People: Message from Organizer I would like someone else to take over the responsibility for Friends of Night People (FONP). It involves organizing the volunteers for the 4th Tuesday of every month, taking the clothes that have been donated by the North Church family down to Friends at 394 Hudson St., Buffalo, as well as keeping things organized while we are serving. I have been volunteering at FONP for 20 years and organizing the volunteers for more than five years. I can help my replacement by sharing my list and advising where needed. Oct. 25th and Nov. 22nd are the remaining two days for this year. We typically do not cook or serve in December as there are many other donations brought into FONP during the holiday season. Please let me know if you are interested in this very rewarding mission. Thank you, Jane Arnold
Youth Fellowship North Church youth in grades 7 through 12 are invited to spend time with our Shared Youth Director Mack Barker on Sunday, October 30, from 10:45 a.m.-noon, in the north basement. Sunday Morning Adult Education 9:30 a.m., Library Divine Violence: Have you struggled with the seeming disconnect between the God of violence in Judges and Revelation and the God of nonviolence in Psalm 23 and the Gospels? John Dominic Crossan states: The biblical God is, on one hand, a God of nonviolent distributive justice and on the other hand, a God of violent retributive justice. How do we reconcile these two visions? For Crossan s answer and to craft your own, read his new book How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian or come to the DVD discussion series. Sunday Morning Adult Education Bible Study 9:30 a.m., Resource Center We have begun the fall season of the adult education Bible study The Parables of Jesus. The study leaders are volunteers. We are reading and discussing the parables of Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels. Books and study guides are not required. Come join us. Alternative Christmas Marketplace In just two weeks we will be holding our fifteenth annual Alternative Christmas Marketplace. This is an opportunity to give a seriously meaningful gift this holiday season. Come learn about 17 local, national and international non-profit organizations dedicated to helping those in need. Make a donation in the name of a friend or family member, and spread the word with an enclosure card describing your gift. Make this your first holiday party of the season. Alternative Christmas Marketplace Sunday, November 6, 2016 Westminster Hall 9:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. Election Day Bake Sale! We Need You! As you know, North Church is an official polling place. On Primary Day in April we held a very successful bake sale that raised just over $450 to help offset our budget deficit! Since record
voter attendance is predicted for the election on Nov 8, we could do even better! We will need lots of volunteers and lots of goodies to repeat our success. There will be sign-up sheets for baked goods and volunteer shifts in coffee hour and the Information Table in the narthex, or call Sue D'Angelo for more information. Book Groups (meet in library) November 16, 10:00 a.m.: The End of White Christian America by Robert P.
