7 PEACE OFFERING The Peace Offering will be received today. This year North Church is not participating in the PC(USA) church-wide Peacemaking Offering, which allows us, on the local level, to determine the use of 25% of the offering. Instead, this year we have determined the use of 100% of the Offering and changed the date of the Offering. The North Church Peace Offering will be evenly divided between the Family Justice Center of Erie County and famine relief in the South Sudan of Africa through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. The Family Justice Center works with victims of domestic violence and their children. It is a one-stop shop, where victims are linked to supporting agencies from a secure, comfortable location. The Northtowns satellite of the FJC is located in the former NPC manse, next door to the church. Nationwide famine and widespread violence with ethnic targeting is killing the people of South Sudan, the world s youngest country. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is partnering with other relief agencies to provide both emergency and long-term food and refugee relief to both those still in the South Sudan and those who have fled for safety. Please give prayerful consideration to your gift and as you always have give generously. OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH: A SIMPLE REQUEST We need you to help let our community know of the existence of the Family Justice Center at 330 North Forest Road next to our church. Three hundred clients experiencing domestic abuse/violence have been served since our opening in February of We know that there are many others who have not come in for services, and we want to get the word out to them that help is available right here. All we need you to do is to take some written materials to the places that you frequent here in the suburbs your doctor s office, your hair salon or barber shop, your school, your dentist s office. It doesn t require money, doesn t require any special skills or training, doesn t require you to travel any distance to help. Please stop by the table in the Dickinson Room throughout October so we can talk to you about this simple thing that can make a huge difference in the life of someone who desperately needs our assistance. 8 Family Justice Center Needs Your Help The Family Justice Center (FJC) satellite is celebrating its 4th anniversary in February. We have seen more than 300 clients in the three years since we opened our doors. The community coalition of churches is an ongoing vital link to the satellite s year-round operation. These groups partner with us in so many ways: cleaning, making donations of time and goods, by doing outreach in the community, and through financial support. For the past two years, the FJC satellite has also sponsored a food pantry for the clients who come to us for assistance. We stock food items, paper products, personal care items, soap, and detergent. Right now the following items are needed: Peanut Butter Hamburger Helper Cereal Macaroni and Cheese Rice Paper Towels Beans Diapers Spaghetti Sauce Baby Wipes Please bring these items to church during the Sundays in October so that we can stock our shelves once again. Thank you so much for your ongoing support. NEW MINDFULNESS COURSES STARTING AT NORTH The Buffalo Mindfulness Center will be starting two new courses at North Church next week: Those who are new to this practice--and those who aren't--are invited. Please check out the information and register online for the courses: Autumn 2017 Mindfulness Course begins Monday, Oct. 23, from 7-8:30 p.m. and lasts for four weeks; AND The Joy of Mindfulness, beginning Friday, Oct. 27, from 7-8:30 p.m., and lasts for four weeks. Information on these courses is on the church website at Donations are welcome. DRESS-A-GIRL Seamstresses, doll makers, ironers, cutters, and runners: come sew with us! We'll be meeting in Westminster Hall on Monday, October 23, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Stay for the whole time or for as long as you can. Please bring a salad ingredient for our build-a-salad supper. Dessert and beverages will be provided. Dress-a-Girl meets the fourth Monday of each month.

9 FRIENDS OF NIGHT PEOPLE We serve a meal at Friends of Night People at 394 Hudson St., Buffalo, the fourth Tuesday of every month. We need volunteers on Tuesday, October 24. At 8:00 a.m. that day, volunteers prepare the meal in the kitchen at North Church. That evening at 5:00 volunteers help serve the meal. If you would like to become involved in this ministry, contact Barb Beall at beaschwa87@yahoo.com or call BIBLE STUDY IN THE RESOURCE CENTER This study resumes today at 9:15 a.m.. We will study the Sunday lectionary. The study leaders are volunteers. ADULT EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES IN OCTOBER Dates: October 22 Time: 11:00 a.m. (immediately after 10:00 worship service) Where: library What: Marcus Borg video series Embracing an Adult Faith We will discuss the concern 21st Century Christians have for four key faith issues: God, Jesus, Salvation, and Practice. Marcus Borg, Canon Theologian, was a biblical and Jesus scholar. He will give his input on these topics and then we will have opportunity to dig deeply into our own understanding in our lives as Christians in today's world. Each session gives us time to reflect on what our childhood faith was teaching us and how we feel today about our faith. How has it changed? Has it changed? Reformation Sunday, October 29, 11:00 a.m., Party in Westminster Hall Celebrate the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation with Martin Luther fastening his theses to the Wittenberg Church Door. This will be an intergenerational event with food, fellowship, learning, and good humor! North Church offers a wide variety of times and opportunities for adult learning and faith formation from choirs to women s (and men s) circles. With the tryout of a new Sunday worship schedule this fall, the Adult Education Committee is experimenting with many times

10 and topics. These offerings are planned for October; November planning will take into account the results of the congregational survey, so look for new times and topics then! You gave $2,300 to One America Appeal, recently formed by the five living former presidents. We have sent a check for $2,800 (which includes $500 from Mission) to One America Appeal. If you have not contributed but you would like to, please feel free to drop your check into the collection plate today and we will see that it gets to One America Appeal. Our favorite instructor, Olivia Ebsary, will lead us. No experience necessary. We provide the chairs! COMMON GROUND: FROM BURMA TO BUFFALO You re invited to hear award-winning journalist Jerry Zremski of the Buffalo News Washington Bureau and news chief/photographer Derek Gee present The Journey to Freedom: How Thousands of Burmese Refugees Are Energizing the West Side, on Sunday, October 29 at noon at Calvary Episcopal Church, 20 Milton St. at S. Cayuga Rd., Williamsville. From Burma to Buffalo was a 20 month period of reporting and concluded with a series that details Buffalo's largest ethnic influx in decades: the arrival of more than 8,000 refugees from Burma TURKEY BASKET DRIVE (see insert) Next month we will partner with area churches, synagogues, and organizations to feed families at Thanksgiving. We are counting on you to help us purchase and assemble food baskets.
