WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD Gathering Time 728 Somebody s Knocking at Your Door 456 Listen, God Is Calling Greeting, Welcome, and Opportunities for Discipleship Welcome to our guests and visitors! As a church of hospitality we invite you, if you feel comfortable, to introduce yourself at this time. We are glad you are here. We hope you will fill out the welcome pad (found in the pew holder) to help us get acquainted. We also invite you to join us in Westminster Hall for Coffee Hour following worship. Everyone please silence your cell phones. Prelude Prelude on Arnsberg (Hymn 412) Peeters Call to Worship Our hearts are ready, O Lord, our hearts are ready! We will sing and make melody! We will awaken the dawn! We will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples, we will sing praises to you among the nations. For your steadfast love is great above the heavens, and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Invocation *Hymn 410 God Is Calling through the Whisper (During the singing of the hymn, please pass Joys & Concerns to center aisle.) *Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession Awesome and compassionate God, you have loved us with unfailing, self-giving mercy, but we have not loved you. You constantly call us, but we do not listen. You ask us to love, but we walk away from neighbors in need, wrapped in our own concerns. We condone evil, prejudice, warfare, and greed. God of grace, as you come to us in mercy, we repent in spirit and in truth, admit our sin, and gratefully receive your forgiveness through Jesus Christ, our Redeemer. Amen. *Silent Confession (A time for personal confession of sin)

*Assurance of Forgiveness Hear the good news! God loves us. God forgives us. *Response 1995 Hal H. Hopson, as found in Holy Is the Lord (Louisville, KY: Geneva Press, 2002). Used by permission. *Passing of the Peace Having received Christ s peace, let us share it by turning to our neighbors and greeting them, saying May the peace of Christ be with you! Children s Time Sacrament of Baptism Scriptural Warrant Elder: Chris Gunther Explanation of the Sacrament Presentation of the Candidate for Baptism Emerson Alber Miller, child of Travis Alber & Aaron Miller Question to the congregation: Do you as members of the universal church of Jesus Christ, promise to guide and nurture all those who, like Emerson, are baptized into Christ, and by word and deed, with love and prayer, encourage all to know and follow Christ and to be faithful members of Christ s church? We do. Profession of Faith Questions to the parents

*The Apostles Creed Do you believe in God, the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayer of Thanksgiving over the Water The Baptism Welcome and Congregational Response Emerson has been received into the one holy catholic and apostolic church through baptism. God has made him a member of the household of God, to share with us in the priesthood of Christ. Let us welcome the newly baptized. With joy and thanksgiving we welcome you into Christ s church to share with us in his ministry, for we are all one in Christ. Baptismal Response Hymn 482 v.1 Baptized in Water Prayer for Illumination Scripture Readings I Samuel 3:1-10 p.247 John 1:43-51 p. 92 The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. WE HEAR THE WORD OF GOD Sermon Who s Calling? The Rev. William T. Hennessy

WE RESPOND AND GIVE THANKS TO GOD *Affirmation of Faith We believe that God is present in the darkness before dawn; in the waiting and uncertainty where fear and courage join hands, conflict and caring link arms, and the sun rises over barbed wire. We believe in a with-us God who sits down in our midst to share our humanity. We affirm a faith that takes us beyond the safe place: into action, into vulnerability, and into the streets. We commit ourselves to work for change and put ourselves on the line; to bear responsibility, take risks, live powerfully and face humiliation; to stand with those on the edge; to choose life and be used by the Spirit for God s new community of hope. Amen. ( The Iona Community from The Iona Abbey Worship Book, published by Wild Goose Publications, Iona Community, Fourth Floor, Savoy House, 140 Sauchiehall St., Glasgow G2 3DH, UK) *Hymn 720 Jesus Calls Us Prayers of the People Offering Offertory Anthem: The Summons Bell *Doxology (Hymn 607) Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ, all people here below; Praise Holy Spirit evermore; Praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen. *Prayer of Thanksgiving and The Lord s Prayer The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. and now we pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

WE DISPERSE TO SERVE GOD IN THE WORLD *Hymn 69 I, the Lord of Sea and Sky *Charge *Benediction Congregational Amen (Hymn 568) *Postlude Rigaudon Campra *Those who are able, please stand.

You will be invited to learn through participation in simple, safe activities of your choosing. There are many ways you can register to attend: online at call the church office at , or sign up in Westminster Hall. Wednesday Book Groups Morning Check out the books at The group meets monthly at 10:00 on Wednesday mornings. All are invited. The book for January 21 is Helen Smith s Men on Strike: Why Men Are Boycotting Marriage, Fatherhood, and the American Dream and Why It Matters (2013). Bill Bryson s narrative nonfiction, titled One Summer: America 1927 (2014), documents what he calls a transitional period in American history--the most extraordinary summer of 1927, when the twentieth century truly became the American century. It includes the world of Capone, Jack Dempsey, Al Jolson, Herbert Hoover, Lindbergh s flight, Babe Ruth s 60, Mickey Mouse, the Mississippi River flood, and bootlegging. This is the reading for February 18. Afternoon The January book is Little Princes by Conor Grennan. For Grennan, It was supposed to be the short stint good deed that would justify his yearlong, footloose, global joyride. Instead, it turned into a longtime commitment. When 29-year-old Conor began as a temporary volunteer at Nepal's Little Princes Children's Home, he thought that he would be working with orphans. What he discovered was even more heart-wrenching: The youngsters at the Kathmandu home were actually pawns in a cynical child trafficking scheme; supposedly guided to safety during the Nepali civil war by con artists who extracted huge sums from

their poor villager parents. Grennan dropped his extended vacation plans and began a dangerous quest to reunite the abandoned children with their parents. The library has several copies so we invite you to read the book and join us for a great discussion in the library at 1 pm on January 28. If you want to get a head start on the February book, it is Once We Were Brothers, by Ronald Balson, the gripping tale about two boys, once as close as brothers, who find themselves on opposite sides of the Holocaust. Once We Were Brothers is Ronald H. Balson's compelling tale of two boys and a family who struggle to survive in war-torn Poland, and a young love that struggles to endure the unspeakable cruelty of the Holocaust. Two lives, two worlds, and 60 years converge in an explosive race to redemption that makes for a moving and powerful tale of love, survival, and ultimately the triumph of the human spirit. It is available in the library or in paperback. Join us on February 25 for our discussion. Learn to Lead How to lead a small group Bible study will be offered January 24, 2015, from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, at Kenmore United Church of Christ, 295 Delaware Rd, Kenmore. The Massachusetts Bible Society has a proven Bible study system that even those who know little about the Bible can learn to lead. In this six-hour workshop, you will learn the basics of leading a small group, build confidence in leading a Bible study, learn how to use as well as receive a free copy of course #1 in Exploring the Bible: The Dickinson Series, receive tips on recruiting your first group. Registration fee is $25 including lunch, payable to The Bible Society of WNY, 2561 Main St., Buffalo, NY Registration deadline is Jan. 20. Resources for Aging in Place Pastoral Care has put together a resource notebook with information for Aging in Place. It is in the Dickinson Room and available for all to view. We ask that you do not remove the book from the area. You will find many pamphlets and brochures providing information to help you or loved ones stay at home as you or they age. The committee will keep the notebook current as more information becomes available. If you have questions or concerns, please call a member of the committee, which is listed in the notebook.
