Service of Renewal of Baptism Sentences of Scripture Renunciation and Affirmation I ask you, therefore, once again to reject sin, to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, and to confess the faith of the church, the faith in which we were baptized. Trusting in the gracious mercy of God, do you turn from the ways of sin and renounce evil and its power in the world? I do. Who is your Lord and Savior? Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. Will you be Christ s faithful disciple, obeying his Word and showing his Love? I will, with God s help. As a sign of our connection to the historic faith of the Church, please stand and join in reciting our ancient creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by

4 the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Church universal, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 7 THANK YOU! Thank you to everyone who gave so generously in 2018! Specifically, thank you for sharing your heart with us through the Christmas Offering and the Special Appeal. You gave nearly $7,000 to the Christmas Offering, which assisted those children in tent cities and families who have been separated on our southern border. We selected two established agencies that are fighting family separation and detention with humanitarian aid and essential support. The services provided include shelter, transportation, basic needs, and legal aid. You gave just over $5,000 to the Special Appeal, which helped offset the church deficit. Thank you for expressing that you appreciate how vital the presence of North Presbyterian Church is for our community and for your personal growth as a Christian disciple. MEMBERSHIP: YOUNG ADULT GATHERING The Membership Committee is sponsoring social gatherings to promote our community. The first event will be geared toward young, busy adults, and will be held at the home of Jim and Mary Atwood, on Feb. 8, from 7-10 p.m. with appetizers and drinks provided. SPECIAL SCHEDULE: SUNDAY, JAN. 27 ANNUAL BREAKFAST MEETING Everyone is invited to attend the annual meeting on Sunday, January 27, beginning at 8:15 a.m. in Westminster Hall. This meeting, which begins with breakfast hosted by the Deacons, is for the purpose of electing elders and deacons, electing at-large members of the Nominating Committee, reviewing the budget and conducting other business appropriate for a congregational meeting. We'll be meeting in Westminster Hall on Monday, January 28, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Stay for the whole time or for as long as you can. Please bring a salad ingredient for our build-a-salad supper. Dessert and beverages will be provided. Dress-a-Girl meets the fourth Monday of each month. FRIENDS OF NIGHT PEOPLE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We serve a meal at Friends of Night People at 394 Hudson St., Buffalo, the fourth Tuesday of every month. We need volunteers on Tuesday, January 22. At 8:00 a.m. that day, volunteers prepare the meal in the kitchen at North Church. If you can help one time or regularly, please contact Ann Eisenlord at or anneisenlord@roadrunner.com. That evening from about 4:30-7:00, volunteers help serve the meal. 9 YOUTH GROUP CHILI COOK-OFF Sunday, February 10, at 11:30 a.m. The youth group is hosting a chili cook-off to raise funds for the building fund of Iglesia Presbyterian en Lares in Puerto Rico. This is a partner church that was badly damaged during Hurricane Maria. You may enter your chili in the competition or just come and enjoy a variety of chilis and vote on your favorite. There will be prizes for the winners. Admission is a suggested donation of $7 to enjoy the chili, or $3 if you also enter a pot of chili. CANTORIAL CONCERT HONORING SUSAN WEHLE AND FLIGHT #3407 Saturday, February 9, at 7:00 p.m. Please plan to come to Sing a New Song Unto God tribute at Congregation Shir Shalom. The North Church library has one copy. The book can be bought online or borrowed from your local library. CONGREGATIONAL WORK MORNING It s a new year, so what better time than to come out to church for just three hours and lend a helping hand? If you re a rock star or handyperson of all things, that s marvelous: we can use you! If you re not, we need you as well! There s something for everyone to do around the church, so come out on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 9:00 a.m., and we ll be North together.

10 ADULT ED.: A RESPONSE TO DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. S LETTER FROM A BIRMINGHAM JAIL January 6, 13, and 20 at 9:00 a.m. in the church library You are invited to join in this three-part, relevant discussion of Dr. King s open letter, his response to the religious leaders in As people of faith today, we are compelled to respond to the themes of his Letter from a Birmingham Jail. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Dr. King In preparation for MLK day, you might want to read King's letter written in 1963, available at and come to one or more of the discussions. UNUSED OFFICES AVAILABLE FOR LEASING North Church has several unused offices that are available for leasing by suitable tenants. The rooms have been cleaned, freshly painted, and are ideal work spaces. Successfully leasing these rooms will generate additional revenue for the church and offset the expense borne by heating and otherwise maintaining these unused areas in the building. Not-for-profit organizations are ideal candidates, but other entities or individuals certainly will be considered. The vetting process includes a review of any potential tenant and approval by Session prior to the signing of a lease. If you know of an individual or organization looking for reasonably priced space, please contact the Church Office at or n.church@verizon.net with the information and someone will follow-up on the lead. ADULT BIBLE STUDY Adult Bible Study meets each Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Currently, we are studying themes from the Bible. Facilitators are volunteers. No books, study guides, or other preparations are required.
