We are now into the Lenten season (seems like we were just celebrating Christmas) and the Fish Fries are in full swing.

1 Knights of Columbus Holy Rosary Council No North Hickory Avenue Arlington Heights, IL (847) March 2016 Charity Unity Fraternity Patriotism GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE Dear Friends, They say that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, let s hope they are right. We are now into the Lenten season (seems like we were just celebrating Christmas) and the Fish Fries are in full swing. A huge expression of gratitude is extended to PGK Mike McMahon and his crew of dedicated volunteers for the efficient running of these important charitable events. If you haven t gotten out to enjoy a delicious fish dinner, please make sure you do. You will not go away hungry. On Saturday, February 13th, 18 very bright area youngsters participated in our annual Spelling Bee (hopefully there are pictures in this newsletter and on the website). I had the pleasure of watching the fierce competition first hand, and I can tell you that these kids are excellent competitors and their parents, schools and teachers should be and are very proud. They are our future. You may remember that last year s State Champion came from Saint James. Speaking of great events. Make sure you reserve Saturday, April 23 rd from 2:00 to 7:00 PM on your social calendar. That is the day we (Holy Rosary Council) is hosting a fundraiser at the Hall for Ashlyn Kiwala. Ashlyn is the wife of Holy Rosary Council 3 rd Degree Knight, Johnathan Kiwala. This brave 25 year old lady is fighting a brain tumor and ever increasing medical bills. The fundraiser being held in conjunction with Ashlyn & John s family and friends will help with the incredible financial burden. The event will be a great time and include entertainment, silent auction and many surprises. Save the date and if you or anybody you know can provide auction items, all donations are appreciated and will help the cause. This is one of those times where we can truly help one of our own. In a few short weeks, Easter will be upon us. We are once again sponsoring 40 Cans for Lent and ask that you contribute to feed the hungry in our own back yard. Once again, Brother Mike Harte is heading up this drive and I want to thank him for his efforts. The collection point is in the Hall office, and feel free to drop off cans and nonperishable food items at any fish fry or meeting. Thank you in advance for your continued generosity. 3 Chaplain s Report As I sat down to gather my thoughts and put pen to paper (actually I m sitting in front of my PC) I looked up to see a copy of Rembrandt s painting Return of the Prodigal Son hanging on my office wall. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, much will be written about this scripture passage from Luke. While many identify with the returning son and his conversion, the true impact of this story and Rembrandt s masterpiece is, the mercy of the father. For those who are unfamiliar with this rendering, it shows the father standing, embracing his returning son who is kneeling in submission in tattered and dirty clothing and with only one sandal. A definite sign of how far he has fallen when left to his own devices and separated from his father loving care. There are others in the picture, maybe family, or friends of the father and one particular figure hidden in the dark recesses of the painting who Fr. Henri Nouwen identified as perhaps the older brother. I first learned of this painting from reading Fr. Nouwen s book. The father s welcome is at the heart of this painting and the parable, but we cannot simply pass over the conversion of the son. His experience, his conversion happens often to each of us when we seek reconciliation. It is hard to seek forgiveness, to return home when we have been away, to seek the mercy of another- especially the mercy of God. God s compassion is described by Jesus not only to show us how our loving God and father feels for us, how His love can heal us, forgive us of our sins and offer us new life; but also to show that God s compassion, God s love and God s mercy are given to invite all of us to become more God-like by having us show His love, His mercy and, His compassion to others. This will be an informative speaker with the economy being so bad. So come on out and join us for this informative meeting. Also, thank you so much for all the well wishes that you sent while I was in the hospital. This was very nice and we appreciated it very much. 4 40 Cans for Lent 40 Cans For Lent Food Drive Please help Holy Rosary Council feed the hungry in our area. If every Knight in our council donates one can of food, or other non-perishable food item, for each day of lent, we will collect over 1,000 pounds of food, and make a difference combating hunger in our area. All donations will be given to local food banks. No donation is too small! If you are not a council member, but reading this at one of our Fish Fries, please consider making a donation on your next visit. Thank you very much!

5 Produce Mobile Could you, a loved one or a friend use free produce and bread stuffs?? The Produce Mobile from the Chicago Food Depository is coning back to St. Thomas of Villanova in Palatine on Thursday, March 10, Rain, snow or shine, our guests will be there. Will you be able to help? Produce and bread stuffs are available to our guests or anyone you may know who could use free food beginning around 9AM and finishing around 11:30AM or so. Again, our guests do not need any form of ID. Volunteers are needed to get carts from the Jewel Store, empty the truck, sort the goods, bag and distribute the goods finally, clean up. Local Middle School Students Compete in 2016 Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee Eighteen 6th thru 8th grade students, representing nine area junior high and middle schools, competed in the 34th Annual Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee held Saturday, February 13, 2016, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Arlington Heights. The first place finisher was Patrick Burns, of St. Emily School in Mt. Prospect. The second place finisher was Emily Seriruk, of Thomas Middle School in Arlington Heights; and the third place finisher was Spencer Sadler, also of Thomas Middle School in Arlington Heights. The Bee used 241 words and lasted a very impressive 32 rounds. Throughout the Bee, spellers correctly spelled words such as pulchritude, force majeure, oubliette, freesia, anemone, and adumbrate. The Bee concluded when Patrick Burns spelled both fissure and periodical correctly to claim first place. All three finalists have qualified to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee on February 27 in Glenview, where the top three finishers of the Regional Bee will qualify for the state tournament in April.
