Knights of Columbus Resurrection Council Assembly 3280 Council News Grand Knight s Message Our Lady of Joy Knights Newsletter March/April 2017 Brother Knights, this year has gone by at an amazing speed. We all as Brothers should be very proud of our accomplishments as a Council. Unfortunately we were unable to do our customary Lenten Fish Fries, but that was out of our control. As they say in Sports, "There is always next year". We are very close to making Star Council this year, all we need is to bring in is three new Brothers into the Council by our May 11, 2017 Council Meeting. It's like the fourth quarter in Football with one minute left and we are on the five yard line. Let's all give this effort a big push. We can do it, just reach out to your fellow Parishioners, and tell them why you are proud to be a Knight! It is an opportunity to give back to our Community, and our Parish. At our May 11, 2017 Council we are electing our new Council Officers for the year. If you would like to step up into a position, you will enjoy it. We are in need of a Worthy Recorder for next year, if you would like to take on this responsibility it would be great. Please let me know if you are interested. I want to thank all Brothers for the opportunity to be your Grand Knight in year Vivat Jesus, Randolph Moore Grand Knight 1

Financial Secretary Hans Verhaagen THE FATHER MICHAEL J. MCGIVNEY GUILD Michael J. McGivney was born to Irish immigrants in Waterbury, Connecticut, on August 12, The Eldest of 13 children, he studied for the priesthood and was ordained on December 22, 1877, and was assigned to St. Mary s Church in New Haven, where he founded the Knights of Columbus in By his holy life, exemplary virtue, piety and priestly character, he was recognized by many as a saint in the making. He was also a priest of great vision and foresight who anticipated the Second Vatican s Council proclamation of the Universal Call to Holiness by empowering laypersons to take leadership positions. The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild serves as a source for information about the life, works and spirituality of Father McGivney. The Guild distributes informational materials about him, receives reports of favors granted through his intercession and oversees the distribution of relics. Guild members receive regular updates on the progress of Father McGivney's cause for canonization and are invited to participate in promoting devotion to this Servant of God. Members of the Knights of Columbus are not automatically Guild members and must elect to join the Guild. The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild Newsletter is published bimonthly except July- August, and is sent free to Guild members. To join the Guild, go to fathermcgivney.org and click on Join the Guild. 4 2017 Golf Fore Charity Brother Knights, We had a terrific Golf Fore Charity Event May 1 st at Desert Mountain. The weather was beautiful, the venue was outstanding, and the Golf Fore Charity administrative team performed flawlessly. There were many Council Knights, wives, and family members that made this event possible. Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and brotherhood. I would like to thank all of the committee chairs for a job well done and recognize their contributions: Mike McDaniel-Set up and coordinated all activities with Desert Mountain Dennis Gougion-Public relations and marketing Ted Dimon-Minutes, data input into Greater Giving, and auctioneer Amy Dale-Greater Giving administrator and check out Gerry Dale-Auction items and red hat coordinator Fred Mapp-Auto sponsorships/hole-in-one contest and putting contest Jim McNamara-Finance Steve Stensrud-Audio and visual Jim Trinchitella-Registration I am blessed to have worked with such a fine team of brother Knights. There is a lot of work that goes into pulling off this event, however the hard work is minimized by more Council participation. We have stream lined our process so that it isn t too much work for anyone person. Next year I would like to see four Council members step up and join our committee. We are looking to fill the following positions in the committee: Greater Giving data input, auction item procurement (picking up auction items from other Knights and delivering items to storage unit), afternoon program chair. Please consider joining the Golf Fore Charity team next year so that we can continue funding St Vincent de Paul and the charities that our Council donates to. Vivat Jesus! Cory Schidler, PGK 2017 Golf-Fore-Charity Chairman 4

Blood Drive Chairman Thomas Nitta We received a warm letter from Sylvia Etchamendy After the successful Blood Drive that was held on March 12. Please take the opportunity to offer a special thank to Brothers Mike Dubes, Ted Dimon, Robert Calabrese and John Quinn made a significant contribution towards the effort by sign up these donors the weekend before the Blood Drive. Dear Tom, United Blood Services thanks you for organizing the recent blood drive at Our Lady of Joy Catholic Church. Your drive will help to assure that blood is available for patients in need. At the blood drive, 30 lifesaving donors stepped up to donate, resulting in 27 procedures for our community and reaching 135% of your blood drive goal. Your efforts and the support of Our Lady of Joy Catholic Church are greatly appreciated and will go a long way toward assuring a strong blood supply, and ultimately saving lives. Again, thank you for your contribution and ongoing support of the community blood program. I enjoyed working with you and look forward to our next meeting to plan your upcoming blood drive scheduled for Sunday, July 30, Sincerely, Sylvia Etchamendy Donor Recruitment Representative United Blood Services (602) setchamendy@bloodsystems.org. 5

Resurrection Assembly News Faithful Navigator s Message Brother Sir Knights, The celebration of Easter brings a sense of renewal and optimism for all Catholics but especially for our Knights of Columbus. Councils and Assemblies across the world are integrating into parish life like never before, providing support for pastoral initiatives and reaching out to fellow parishioners in a spirit of discipleship. All Knights are encouraged to seek opportunities to be involved in parish ministries and to make a difference in the lives of fellow Catholics. The Assembly year is ending in June and we are organizing to elect the team of officers who will lead the Assembly beginning July 1. One of the most rewarding activities a Knight or Sir Knight can experience is to hold office and participate on the leadership team of the Council or Assembly. It is not too late to be a candidate, as nominations will again be accepted at the May business meeting followed by the election of officers. If an officer position is not preferred, please consider joining the Communication Committee, Faith Committee or volunteer to chair the Membership Committee. Be an active member of your Assembly. As a reminder, there will be a Patriotic Degree (4 th ) Exemplification on June 10, at the Sheraton Crescent Hotel in Phoenix. All Knighthood (3 rd ) Degree Knights are encouraged to achieve the highest degree of Knighthood. Please contact Faithful Comptroller SK Jim Schuttenberg or me, and we will provide complete information, forms and sponsorship. I also encourage all current members of the Assembly to attend the wonderful exemplification ceremony in support our pastor and brother Knights. Vivat Jesus! SK Gerry Dale Faithful Navigator 7

From the Faith Committee Chairman March/April 2017 The Catholic Men s Conference was presented on Saturday, February 4 th to a sold-out auditorium at Xavier College Preparatory. The Theme was year two (of three) of Bishop Olmsted s Apostolic Exhortation Into the Breach. Year one was all about Catholic men immersed in accepting Jesus invitation of friendship in Him, with Him, and through Him. Knowing about Jesus isn t enough. Knowing Jesus personally is more paramount then what we, as men, did and do to know our wives. The Theme in Year one was; A New Apostolic Moment - The New Evangelization, also known as discipleship. As disciples, we are called to introduce others to Jesus Christ through our good actions and our witness of God in our daily lives. The Second-Year Theme is; A Field Hospital and A Battle College. All of us are sinners and in-need of spiritual healing the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist defined the Field Hospital as in spiritual. Prayer, Scripture reading, and, at least one hour of time spent in the OLOJ Adoration Chapel are basic to Theme s one and two. The Battle College? Bishop Olmsted says; The Church is, and has always been, a school that prepares us for spiritual battle, where Christians are called to fight the good fight of faith (1 Timothy 6), to put on the armor of God, and to be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil (Ephesians 6:11). OLOJ is currently conducting several college level classes as well as a more fundamental class to grow our knowledge of and in Jesus and His Church. Bishop Olmsted adds; With this letter, then, my sons and brothers, I urge you to heed Jesus call and to let Him from your mind and heart with the light of the Gospel for the purpose of being sent. That is why this letter is an Apostolic Exhortation. I am hereby exhorting you to step into the breach to do the work of Christ s soldiers in the world today. These Men they call Knights (KC Booklet 937 7/11) is a little booklet given to me when I went for the 2 nd and 3 rd Degrees and it states on page -2- : A Knight accepts the teaching authority of the Catholic Church on matters of faith and morals and aspires to live in accord with the precepts of the Catholic Church that is he is a practical Catholic. As Knights, we support our parishes, serving as the strong right arm of our priests 9

and bishops, standing in solidarity with them and providing them with whatever spiritual and temporal support they need. This statement more than implies we are called to support Father Jess initiatives to strengthen the OLOJ Family, the Domestic Church per Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson, and Bishop Olmsted s Into the Breach. Do not sit on the sidelines! Be that strong right arm of Father Jess implementing and promoting his initiatives! Vivat Jesus! SK Cliff McGraw, Chairman, Faith Committee From the Communication Committee Chairman We continue to look for opportunities to enhance and promote the American Patriotic spirit as Sir Knights in the Parish and the community. Please be sure to wear your Patriotic Degree Badges to all Parish, and Assembly functions! This will provide you an opportunity to engage with and answer questions for potential future Patriotic Knights. Please call me at and/or me at Mark.Levally@outlook.com if you would have any ideas on how to enhance our Patriotic support to the Knights and their families of the Parish. You may also view our Assembly web page at the following link: SK Mark LeVally, Chairman, Communications Committee Former District Deputy, SK Wes Casaus Worthy Grand Knights & Brothers All, The final days of our Fraternal Year are upon us and we are seeing many updates from our State Council on the progress towards Star Council. The prestigious award given each year for those councils who excel at recruiting new members, completing the charitable service programs, and meeting the required goal of new insurance members in our Order. 10

We work hard as a team to fulfill the requirements of those goals but sometimes the insurance is overlooked by our members as a valued asset of their membership. Why wouldn't a member take advantage of their fraternal benefits of our Order's insurance program? Sometimes it's important to remind ourselves how successful our Order is because of our insurance program. Supreme Knight Carl Anderson calls it "The Catholic Difference". It's who we are, what our core values are, and it's "The Catholic Difference" of our insurance program that works as the financial engine that supports charity around the world. What does a Catholic life insurance company look like? It s an important question to ask. As you consider all the options for your family s life insurance and financial services, you might wonder if any of them are actually unique. After all, every life insurance company sells life insurance. But the Knights of Columbus is, in fact, unlike any other company. We do things differently because both our faith and our members demand it. We call it the Catholic difference. Here are a few of the things that make us unique: We invest morally. The Knights of Columbus screens all of its investments according to guidelines published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. We will not invest in companies that deal in abortions, pornography, embryonic stem cell research, human cloning and related endeavors. We support the Church. Last fraternal year, the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council and local councils together donated $48 million to the Church. The Order gives generously through various programs such as the Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP), which, in partnership with our councils, has provided more than $67 million in scholarships to more than 110,000 men and women pursuing religious vocations since The Knights also helped to restore the facade of St. Peter s Basilica in 1999 for the Millennial Jubilee and purchased satellite equipment that has since broadcasted the recent popes messages to the world. The Order s aid to the Vatican and the pope is ongoing, with an annual donation from the proceeds of the Vicarius Christi fund given to the Holy Father for his personal charities. 11

We put our Catholic families first. We are not a commercial company. We have no stockholders. We answer only to our members. We return a share of our profits through dividends to our participating policyholders, and we donate generously. We have given more than $1.55 billion to charity in the last decade. Most of these funds are generated by proceeds from our insurance business. The proceeds have gone to causes such as pro-life initiatives, disaster relief or aid to persecuted Christians in the Middle East wherever help is needed most. We put ethics first. Our corporate commitment to ethics and our ethical business practices have been applauded by the business community. Recently, the Ethisphere Institute named the Knights of Columbus a World s Most Ethical Company for the third consecutive year. We are currently one of only two companies to have earned the designation in the life insurance category. Our members, their spouses and their dependent children have exclusive access to our insurance program. Working with your brother Knight field agent, you can purchase top-quality products to protect your family s future, all while knowing that you are supporting an organization that shares your faith, your beliefs and your values. More than 130 years after our venerable founder, Father Michael J. McGivney, set our insurance program in motion, we strive to stay true to his mission and our commitment to our members and our Catholic difference. Other companies may come along and try to convince you that they are just like us. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But on closer examination, you will find what you always suspected: There is only one Knights of Columbus. We ll be happy to get to know you better and show you that being Catholic always makes a difference. God Bless, Mr. Wes Casaus PGK, PFN, FDD Field Agent (623) Wes.Casaus@kofc.org My Field Agent Site Member of KofC since

Degree Information The Degrees of the Knights of Columbus Admission Degree Formation Degree Knighthood Degree Patriotic Degree The Patriotic Degree is the most visible arm of the Knights of Columbus and represents the last principal of the order: Patriotism. This includes promoting responsible citizenship and love and loyalty to their country. Members of the Patriotic Degree are asked to participate to join in the Honor Guard, which serves at patriotic and civic functions. All Knighthood Degree members are highly encouraged to further their advancement in to the order by becoming a Patriotic Degree member. Members who wear the emblem of the degree are committed to conduct themselves honorably as Catholic gentlemen in both their private and public life as well as patriotically for the good of the country. The Patriotic Degree sword represents their reverence for the Eucharist and the Pope, Bishops, and hierarchy of the church, and displays publicly their willingness to protect the Church and Priests.
