A friend of mine was very fond of using the phrase: Can t tell the players without a scorecard He would often use that line when he didn t understand something at school He seemed to be begging for introductions, explanations And yes, he was very fond of baseball As the baseball playoffs continue, we may have moved on to football or simply tuned out since our favorite teams are no longer in contention for the World Series But if you are a serious baseball fan, you probably know most of the players, maybe they were part of your fantasy roster Because you know the players, I suspect you have a deeper interest and understanding of the road to the World Series Listening to Scripture can have a similar result I ve said it before, but the lectors at St Agnes are just tops in my humble opinion I m happy to say I know our lectors practice and study the Word to be proclaimed What happens when we don t recognize a name being proclaimed or a phrase used in one of the readings we are hearing at mass? Hmmm We may be distracted and that is human nature As my friend would say, if the players have no names on the backs of their uniforms we may not know the players without a scorecard I don t often plug books but Bayard s Living with Christ series has a lectionary edition called Sunday Missal for Young Catholics I thought it might be helpful to lift up their Key Words (p 272) for this Sunday s readings: Jacob was the grandson of Abraham and the father of many children His twelve sons were the first people in the twelve tribes of the Jewish people In this reading, Jacob represents all the people of Israel Ephraim was a son of Joseph (one of Jacob s sons) who was later adopted by Jacob and became the head of one of the twelve tribes of Israel The Bible sometimes uses the name Ephraim to mean the whole people of Israel Aaron Moses older brother, helped him free the Israelites from slavery in Egypt Aaron and Moses were Levites, the priestly tribe of the Hebrew people The chief priests and all other priests were chosen from the tribe of Levi Aaron is considered to be the first high priest of the Israelites Son of David (or descendant of King David) is a name the Hebrew people used to describe the Messiah They were expecting the Messiah to be born of the House of David In today s gospel, Bartimaeus knows in his heart that the person who is passing by is the Messiah, so he calls Jesus son of David Spiritual Blindness is not something described in the book, but may be a message for us in our listening to God We may try to read the bible or pray verses without really knowing the players In a small way, we could be like my friend trying to go to a ballgame in which he doesn t know any of the players He would be the first to tell you how much more fun it became when his father bought him a scorecard Deacon Bill SUNDAY COLLECTION FOR OCTOBER 21: $12,62700 Includes Faith Direct Giving We thank you for your Stewardship 2
