When Martha complains to Jesus that her sister Mary isn t helping to serve, Jesus instead rebukes Martha. While I am certain he was grateful for the hospitality she was providing to him, he was rejecting the anxiety and worry that her work was causing her. He pointed out how Mary had chosen the better option, of sitting down and listening to Jesus and learning from Him. How many times have we been a Martha in our lives? How many times have we ignored our families while going about our everyday existence, making busy-work, when they instead need us to sit down and listen to them? And how many times have you sat through Mass and mentally planned your week ahead, instead of listening to the words of God through the readings or the homily? The Lord has called each of us to be a disciple. He has chosen us to do his work here on earth, whether it is as a spouse, a parent, or a representative of his Church, through calling to religious life or as a member of his various ministries in this community. Are we paying too much attention to making more money, having a nicer home, or impressing our neighbors that we aren t spending the time that Jesus wants us to spend as his disciples? Discipleship requires focus. Now, I am not suggesting that you quit your job or live in a pig sty, but take the time to look into your heart and decide if you need to give more quality time to God or to your family. Perhaps you can you take a few minutes each day for prayer or maybe spend an hour once a week in Eucharistic Adoration. You will be more focused at Mass if you take a more active role, such as being an usher, greeter, lector or Eucharistic Minister. At the end of the workday, instead of turning on the television, spend a few minutes just talking and listening to your spouse, or play a board game with your children while they tell you about their day and you share your experiences and values with them. This also gives you an opportunity to evangelize without preaching. You have often heard the refrain from Ecclesiastes 3, To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven. Make sure you take the time to be a Mary and listen. WATCH YOUR POSTURE Our posture is often a tip-off to our hospitality and reverence for the Lord. Note the actions of Abraham as he greeted the Lord in the presence of three men who appeared near his tent. He ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them. He bowed to the ground as he met them. He and Sarah, his wife, hastened to prepare a meal and bring food and water to their guests. In the Gospel story, Jesus friend Mary sat at his feet in order to listen to him speak. How do we welcome and reverence the Lord? What do our actions show? Do we remember the Lord s presence in the Blessed Sacrament? How do we welcome the Lord in the scripture readings? How do we acknowledge his presence in our brothers and sisters, both at Mass and afterwards? Whether we kneel, stand, or sit in the Lord s presence, may our hearts and minds always be attuned to him. I was able to attend this delightful event and meet many loving supporters and participate in lots of fun events that Gia and her team provided for us. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet many caring parish members and other members of the community who support our mission. The outpouring of gifts and support was astonishing. This also resulted in strengthening the network of other local charities who help support our mission. It was a fun event. I know this took a lot of effort to put together, so I wanted to let you know we deeply appreciate everyone who attended, including those who brought their teen and younger age children to lead the games and also learn about our mission to mothers and families. Together we are all making a difference in the lives of the women and babies we serve. We would not be able to continue with our mission without our wonderful supporters. 6 HAPPY 5 th BIRTHDAY TO THE ST. AGNES COUNCIL OF THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS St. Agnes Council #15344 is only five years old, but it has become a very active and important ministry at St. Agnes Parish. Originally part of Council #6038, which comprised Queen of All Saints, St. Bonaventure, St. Agnes and St. Francis Parishes, our current council has grown to include 65 members and provides numerous charitable fundraisers, service projects and social opportunities that all members of our community can benefit from or enjoy. The Knights of Columbus is an international organization of more than 1.9 million Catholic men whose principal work involves helping others in need. The organization was founded in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney of St. Mary s Church in New Haven, Connecticut, to render financial aid to members and their families, and it has grown to become the world s foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. It has expanded to more than 15,000 councils throughout North America, the Philippines, and numerous other countries. Currently, the cause for sainthood of Father McGivney is being investigated by the Vatican. Bishop Michael Barber is a Knight of Columbus, as well as our Pastor, Father Johnson Abraham, previous pastors Father George, Father Jan and Father Vince, and Deacons Bill and Tony. All of our current council members are also active in other ministries, including Pastoral Council, Stewardship, School Board, CYO, Hospitality, choirs, lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Fil-Am, Share, and St. Vincent de Paul. In the last five years, our council has had many accomplishments, including: Raised money to purchase one of the votive lights stands in the Chapel. Ran a wheelchair program wherein parishioners donated funds through the Knights of Columbus to purchase over 100 wheelchairs for the American Wheelchair Mission. Conducted a Food for Families 40 Cans for Lent program with the parish and school, contributing over 4,000 pounds of food, which was in turn donated to Share. The Council has also supported Share with financial donations of over $2,500. Given $2,500 to help support seminarians in their studies to become priests. Coordinated youth activities such as the Free Throw Contest, Essay contest, Substance Abuse Poster Contest, and Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest. St. Agnes has had a State champion in both the Free Throw Contest and Substance Abuse Poster Contest. Hosted many breakfasts and dinners, including the monthly Parish Pancake Breakfast, First Friday and Lenten Fish Fries, International Dinner, annual Crab Dinner, slicing turkeys for the St. Mary s Christmas Dinner, spaghetti dinners, steak dinners, 4 th of July Barbeque, barbeque for school and youth events, and hosting the bar at other events. Guarding the Statue of Our Lady of Fatima during the weekend Masses and Rosary. Carrying the Canopy at Holy Thursday Mass. Honor Guard at several Masses. Keep Christ in Christmas card program. Supporting other youth events, such as the Mexico Program, Altar Server Recognition Awards Dinner, and preparing meals for Confirmation Retreats. We are so very blessed to have this active organization here at St. Agnes. If you are an active Catholic man, we welcome you to join this ministry.
