1 IN THIS ISSUE Pope Francis Corner Upcoming Events Insurance Corner District Deputy s Corner Assembly Information Birthdays Anniversaries Did You Know Upcoming Degrees Parish Upcoming Events Council Calendar Officers GRAND KNIGHT CORNER Dear Brother Knights, We started Columbian Year with a barbeque celebrating our Nation s birthday on July 4th, followed by the past Grand Knight s dinner on July 15, a celebration of our Council s 5th birthday on July 17 with free hot dog barbeque, cake and cookies for our fellow parishioners, and finally the installation of the new Council officers on July 18. During this first month of this Fraternal Year we welcomed 2 new Knights who received their First Degrees on July 24, Brothers Neil Cuffy and Tom Grewis. We also welcomed 2 Brothers who transferred into our Council, Deacons Tony Reyes and Bill Drobick. It is great to see our Council grow. One area where we need to grow is the 4th Degree. I encourage our Brothers who have completed their 3rd Degree to do their 4th Degree. Exemplification for the 4th Degree will be in April 2017 in Sacramento. Our Council s 4th Degree Knights belongs to the Todos Santos Assembly. Installation of the new assembly officers for the Todos Santos Assembly and certification of the color corps is scheduled for Saturday, September 24 at Zio Fraedo s in Pleasant Hill. Brother David Wood will be installed as the new Faithful Purser replacing Brother George Conlow who was an Assembly Chapter member and held that position of Faithful Purser for the last several years. All Brother Knights and their wives are invited to attend the event and dinner. Cost is $30 per person and attire is formal. With your support, for this new Columbian Year, I plan to accomplish: 1. Having at least four 4th Degree Brothers become new members of the color corps. This will ensure color corps participation at all St Agnes special Masses such as Christmas Eve, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Vigil, and other events requested by Fr Johnson. The only color corps member in our Council is Brother Jeffrey Aquino. It is recommended that at least 5 color corps members be present at these Masses to lead the Processional and Recessional, and perform other duties requested by the parish leadership. I will be joining the color corps and encourage other 4th Degree Knights in our Council to join Brother Jeffrey and me. 2. Increasing the number of charities that our Council annually supports both through our State and Supreme Councils, and through our own fund raising. For the past years we have been supporting Share, a worthy charity. I would like to add 1 or 2 more charities that could use our annual support. 3. Increasing attendance to our monthly business meetings and participation in our Council events, and finally 4. Increasing recruitment of new Knights for our Council. The arena counted 10,000 volunteers from Poland and 2,000 from other parts of the world, who came together to celebrate their hard work and to rejoice in the presence of the Holy Father. Many of the volunteers had been working for months to plan World Youth Day, which drew approximately two million young people to Kraków. Pope Francis, who was accompanied by Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz of Kraków and Auxiliary Bishop Damian Muskus, O.F.M., the coordinator-general of WYD Kraków, arrived at the Mercy Centre around 5:00 p.m. CET. The Holy Father was privately greeted and welcomed by Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore. When the Holy Father arrived on stage, he paused in prayer before the WYD cross and the image of Our Lady of Kalwaria, a 17th-century Polish painting of Our Lady of Calvary. The presence of the miraculous image was especially significant as it was only the third time it traveled out of the Church of the Angelic Mother of God adjacent to the Franciscan Monastery in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Poland. It was also before this painting that young Karol Wojtyła s father had entrusted his son to the protection of the Blessed Mother following the death of his wife, Karol s mother. Young Wojtyła is today s St. John Paul II, who as pope had an unshakeable devotion to the Blessed Mother. Read more at: September 2016 Issue

Like most awareness-raising campaigns, Life Insurance Awareness Month was created because there is an overwhelming lack of understanding of life insurance, its uses, its benefits, and its variations among the general public. Each year, the Life Insurance Market Research Association (LIMRA) puts out the results from a recent survey, and unfortunately, the numbers they report continue to be discouraging. A recent survey found that more than 75 percent of people polled did not have a personal financial advisor, even though 68 percent of them said their opinion of the current economic conditions was somewhat unfavorable or very unfavorable. In other words, a majority of those surveyed were uncomfortable with the economy and the uncertainty it brings, yet they did not seek professional assistance. Maybe they spoke with their friends and family. Maybe they hoped the instability would go away on its own. Maybe they did not know to whom to turn. If you fall into this category, please remember that as a member of the Knights of Columbus, you have a full-time, professional agent you can call your own. My primary responsibility is the care and service of your family s life insurance, retirement, and long-term care needs. I ll answer your questions because I want your decisions to be informed ones. I want to help. Another LIMRA statistic said 43 percent of people did not buy life insurance because they worry about making the wrong decision. Big Thank you to the following Brothers: Mike McDermott, Cheng-Feng Tsai, Ed McGuirk, Jeff Aquino, Gary Downs, Linus Farias, Frank Mazzuca and my son Andrew Wood for installing a pathway to our container. 6 ASSEMBLY EVENTS TODOS SANTOS CORNER 4 th of July Parade, BBQ at Queen of All Saints Sept 24: Installation of Officers and Color Corps Nov 18: Veteran s & Christmas Dinner Zio Fraedo s Restaurant Assembly Meetings are the 2nd Wednesday of each month in the Pope John Paul II room at St Francis of Assisi Church 860 Oak Grove Road, Concord, CA. This is to invite you and your ladies to the 1st of our Assembly's important formal event this Columbian Year Please mark your calendar for Saturday, September 24, 2016 starting at 4pm. We will be having our Annual Certification of the Color Corps at 4pm, followed by the Installation of Assembly Officers at 5pm and finally the New Knights' Dinner at 6pm. The event will be officiated by our soon to be Former Master, SK JC Greco, assisted by the Senior District Marshal, SK Tim Fukuda. The event will be held at Zio Fraedo's Restaurant, one of the upscale Italian eatery in the East Bay, located in Pleasant Hill CA. The price per person is $30. You have a choice of New York Steak, Salmon or Chicken for dinner. The dinner is regularly priced at $50. However to entice as many Sir Knights and Council members to attend, our Worthy Faithful Captain, SK Jim Francis and our Worthy Faithful Pilot, SK Bill O'Connell, have offered to subsidize the affair resulting in the dinner to cost a very affordable $30 per person. This is a wonderful and great opportunity to attend an Assembly event and get to wear your tuxedo and social baldric to rekindle camaraderie among your Brethren in the 4th degree.
