The Church began with Jesus and 12 apostles, and now it has grown to 1.2 billion members all over the world, the biggest single faith community. The Church has been involved in missionary work right from the very beginning when Jesus commissioned his apostles to go and baptize in the name of the Trinity. Missionary work is a natural consequence of our love for God and neighbor. Once we have received the gift of faith and salvation, with the peace and hope it brings, it is logical to want to share it with others. We can participate in the missionary action of the Church through our prayers. St. Therese of Lisieux is a great example of this. Even though she never left her convent in France, she was a spiritual sister for two missionary priests, supporting them through her letters and prayers, and she had great missionary zeal for all people to know Christ. As a result, she is one of the patrons of all missions, together with St. Francis Xavier. We can also do a great deal of missionary work by the way we live our faith. We are surrounded by good people who do not know Christ, or who know Him only superficially. When we let the peace, joy and hope that our faith brings transform our lives, and when we strive to live Christian love generously, people take notice. Many converts have come to the Church because their lives have been touched by the goodness of Catholic men and women who live Christ s teachings in their ordinary daily lives. I take this opportunity to thank you for your support for the missions. May God help each of us to remember that we are all called to be missionaries in one way or another, at home or abroad. Let us join our prayers to those of St. Therese, Patroness of the missions, interceding for our missionaries all over the world, that God will give them courage, strength, patience, and ever-greater love. Through our collaboration with the Holy Spirit, may all nations come to know, love, and serve the one true God, and to love each other as sisters and brothers in Christ. Fr. Johnson SUNDAY COLLECTION FOR OCTOBER 16: $10, Includes Faith Direct Giving We thank you for your Stewardship. 2

6 Build a Civilization of TRUTH Americans will participate in another major election in few weeks. Sadly, we have witnessed the dark reality that politics in contemporary America is often a contest of powerful interests, partisan attacks, personal accusations, sound bites, and media hype. Unfortunately this has left many Catholic Americans confused, angered, and even disenfranchised about participating in this year s election. Yet we must rise above the fray and still participate in a more noble way. As Catholics and responsible citizens, we engage this election year with integrity. Our faith teaches that citizenship is a virtue and our individual participation in political life is a moral obligation. Thus our faith is not private, but publically lived out with great courage and conviction. Ultimately this obligation comes from Jesus who commanded us, Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to all creation (Mk 16:15). In this election season, let us go forward armed with the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Our Catholic Faith contributes profound answers to the political questions of our times. We do not proclaim just one opinion among many. We proclaim the TRUTH! Like Jesus, we have the words of eternal life. The Catholic Faith presents to American society a consistent moral framework inspired by Sacred Scripture and the teaching of Christ and the Church -- that upholds the life and dignity of every human being, most especially the weak and vulnerable. Catholics participate in political life because we seek to advance the common good of all humanity. Thus, to not participate in this election means to hide the Catholic TRUTH under a bushel basket. So, therefore, as Catholics it is our duty to participate in the election in order to advance the Catholic vision of society, where the dignity of every human life is cherished and respected. We must discern which candidates and ballot propositions will best advance this vision of the common good, the good of human life, the good of the family, the respect for religious freedom and conscience, and the care of the poor and vulnerable. My friends, as you prepare to vote, I strongly urge you to embrace your Catholic values. Be bold in your faith. Study your faith. Learn about the issues and the Catholic responses to them. Thoroughly study the positions of both candidates and do not be disturbed by emotions or burdened by the personality of the candidates. Above all, allow the voice of God to resound in your heart, asking him to assist your discernment. May the Holy Spirit guide you and may he bless you in building a civilization of truth and love. Fr. Brandon Macadaeg NO COMPARISONS How many times have we read or heard about someone who s gotten into trouble maybe even fired from a job because of a brush with the law? While our Christian minds tell us to be sorry and even pray for the person, a little voice inside our heads may also be saying, I m glad I would never do anything like that. And perhaps we wouldn t. But are there some things we do that are still not pleasing in God s eyes? Today s readings caution us not to look so intently at someone else s wrongdoing that we overlook our own weaknesses and shortcomings. When we measure ourselves against the worst people we can think of, we come out looking pretty good. There is a danger, however, in using someone else s behavior as a way of reflecting our own goodness. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
