2 June 17, From the Pastor THAT CHRIST MAY DWELL IN YOUR HEARTS BY FAITH CHRISTIAN FRIENDSHIP AND BASEBALL By the me you read this, it is a story that is sure to have been seen by many already. It is a story of friendship between two local high school athletes and long me friends, who recently competed against each other for a berth in the Minnesota State High School Baseball Tournament. The story has made na onal news and is definitely one of those that hits us in the feels as the saying goes. The reason I like it enough to share here is more than the fact that it happened on a baseball diamond. The story points to something deeply important: that friendship, when prac ced well, creates a bond deeper than any passing thing of this world. I do not know if the friendship of the two young men here is rooted at all in the things of God, but if not, they cannot be far from the Kingdom of Heaven. It is this sort of friendship that we need at St. Michael s. Cul va ng friendships like this must be one of our most conscious priori es, for I fear that they are severely lacking in the life of our community. Let us increasingly come together in Christ and the sacramental life of His Holy Catholic Church in the context of loyal and self-sacrificing friendships! It ought to be the case for every soul that comes through our doors to worship here, that they would have friendships of this quality within our walls and because of Jesus Christ. A fan captured the moment in a video posted to Twitter that shows Koehn pushing past his catcher -- who appears to try and congratulate him to console his friend while teammates stormed the mound and threw their gloves in the air to revel in the moment. Koehn and Kocon reportedly played youth baseball together before going their separate ways in high school, but maintained a close relationship, according to the outlet. Mounds View defeated Totino-Grace Minnesota HS pitcher consoles friend after striking him out to reach state championship By Benjamin Brown Fox News Sportsmanship was on full display over the weekend in Minnesota when a high school baseball player comforted his friend right after striking him out in playoff game to advance to the state championship. Instead of celebrating with teammates on the field, Mounds View pitcher Ty Koehn jogged off the mound after delivering the gamewinning strikeout and embraced Totino-Grace batter Jack Kocon because friendship is more important than just the silly outcome of a game, Bring Me The News reported. I knew the game was going to keep going or it was going to end right there, Koehn told the Minnesota sports site. I knew I had to say something. Our friendship is more important than just the silly outcome of a game. I had to make sure he knew that before we celebrated. Next weekend, please welcome Rev. Dennis Mar n who will be with us to celebrate Masses and tell us about the work of Unbound, a lay Catholic sponsorship ministry that helps children and elderly in 18 developing countries. For more Informa on about Unbound visit Working with Unbound gives me an outlet to answer the pope s call to solidarity with the poor. I feel personally involved by not only calling on sponsors but sponsoring myself. As a priest of the Diocese of Davenport, Iowa, Father Dennis Mar n served as a teacher in Catholic schools, pastor and associate pastor of parishes. As a director of pastoral care at a Catholic hospital and chaplain at a V.A. hospital, Father Mar n ministered to the spiritual needs of people. For 20 years he enfolded the Spanish ministry into two parishes. Father Mar n con nues to serve the diocese of Davenport in Hispanic Ministry. He enjoys celebra ng Mass in Spanish because he believes the communi es posi ve vibes upli the human spirit. In his free me, he bikes, golfs and travels.
3 11TH Sunday in Ordinary Time 3 Formed Adult Faith Forma on This week s Pick of the Week is Pure Fatherhood by Devin Schadt. Every father has been entrusted with a lo y voca on-to serve as a visible reflec on of God the Father. In this inspiring talk, Devin draws upon the example of Saint Joseph to encourage fathers to understand and embrace their privileged role in the family and Church today. Listen to this talk on God s Mighty Servant was produced by Igna us Press Studios. This is the amazing story of Sister Pascalina Lehnert ( ), who was the personal confidant and secretary to Pope Pius XII for forty years, when he was the papal nuncio in Germany, and then for his whole pon ficate. The Pope had great confidence in her wisdom, energy, and loyalty, and she became known as the most powerful woman in the history of the Va can. In 1918, the young nun Pascalina was sent to Munich to be the housekeeper of the new papal nuncio, Eugenio Pacelli. Though they seem to have li le in common, Pacelli became impressed by Pascalina s directness, zeal, and alertness. During his delicate nego a ons on the Concordat with Bavaria and Prussia, he benefited from Pascalina s per nent comments and clear-headed views. He is sad to leave her behind when his appointed Cardinal Secretary of State in 1929 and moves to Va can City- where women are forbidden to live. But Pascalina s loyalty and strong support are missed, and she is invited to work in the Va can - the first woman ever to do so. As part of Pacelli s Va can household, she contends with the intrigues and rivalries of men who resent the privileges she enjoys and the power she wields. But all the in-figh ng soon pales before the horrors of the war, which begins the same year that Pacelli is elected Pope and becomes Pius XII. As the war tears Europe apart, the Pope puts his life, and the papacy itself, on the line by opposing the Nazis and Facists. Visi ng the injured and steering through plots and conspiracies, he relies heavily on Sister Pascalina, his most important link to the world of the suffering and the persecuted. Thanks to the fearlessness of Rome s clergy and the relessness of Pascalina, he manages to save the lives of many Roman Jews. As head of the private papal charity, Pascalina uses her organiza onal skills to help thousands. She remains at Pacelli s side un l his death in 1958, as his most important confidante, valued advisor, and friend God s mighty servant to the end.
