2 Dove NEWS Musings -1- Bless you my friends! This will be my last Dove. News as your pastor, because your diligent search committee is making plans for pastoral leadership after Easter. Along with you, I am eager to see you thrive with your own shepherd. Your gifts, strengths and talents are many and under your own shepherd, I expect these to bud, blossom and bloom in a multicolored way! It is certain to be an amazing springtime in Avondale. It s been an amazing year. I ve certainly enjoyed preaching for you, leading worship, exploring some new ways of session meetings and even going live on Facebook. I ve made new friends, learned a bunch along the way and have been richly blessed through our time together. West Grove Presbyterian Church, too, has enjoyed the closer relationship and I expect for that to continue. We re not going anywhere and we re only two miles down the road. Don t hesitate to invite us, call us and include us in your community events and outreaches. For, I do believe that we re better together than we are all by ourselves. My biggest hope for us all is that we fall more passionately and more madly in love with Jesus Christ and carry His love and His grace into our daily lives. When Christ increases in our lives, when Christ s love flows through our every thought, every word, every action and every interaction, we are then spreading the aroma of God s kingdom wherever we go. May that be our daily prayer and our daily challenge. Find a fresh new way to share Christ s love, Christ s welcoming, Christ s warmth with someone in weekly worship, someone in your daily walk or someone in your daily work. When that ignites, catches on and spreads, the community will look at one another and say, you can tell they are Christians by their love. Session Highlights No March Session notes this month as the majority of our time was spent in discussing the Pastoral needs for APC and the work necessary to call a new Pastor to APC. The Search Committee will be updating the Congregation soon. With Love, Pastor Charlie
3 Follow Me One Step at a Time From: Jesus Calling, by Sarah Young I am taking care of you. Trust Me at all times. Trust Me in all circumstances. Trust Me with all your heart. When you are weary and everything seems to be going wrong, you can still utter these four words: I trust You, Jesus. By doing so, you release matters into My control, and you fall back into the security of My everlasting arms. Before you arise from your bed in the morning, I have already arranged the events of your day. Every day provides many opportunities for you to learn My ways and grow closer to Me. Signs of My Presence brighten even the dullest day When you have eyes that really see. Search for Me as for hidden Treasure. I will be Found by you. -2- Proverbs 3:5 Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding ; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will make your Paths straight. Sunday School Praying for: JACKIE BARTO: as she heals from her broken arm. AMY MCLOUGHLIN: as she deals with high blood pressure. DON WILSON: as he recouperates from a second heart attack. Continues in Room 103 each Sunday following the 9:15 AM Worship Service. Will Wallace leads the lesson with open discussion. Healing Prayer Ministry The Healing prayer ministry meets at APC on the first Saturday of each month at 10:00AM unless a special request for prayer is needed. Contact Joan or Marge with any prayer needs. Joan Bolton: Marge Pickel
4 Prayer Ministry by Marge Pickel -3- NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER Thursday, May 4, 2017 SAVE THIS DATE! On May 4, 2017 at 6:30 pm at Penn Township Park, West Grove several churches from all faiths in the community will be part of The National Day of Prayer, Avondale Presbyterian Church is one of the churches participating in this national event. We will be at the PAVILION for prayer time and live music by the Community Choir from New London United Methodist Church. National Day of Prayer calls on all people of different socio-economic, political and ethnic backgrounds in the United States to pray for the nation and its leaders. It is a time for all people to pray TOGETHER. Through the efforts of The National Day of Prayer Task Force, more than 35,000 prayer gatherings will be conducted by about 40,000 volunteers across the United States. Several million people are expected to participate in this call to Prayer. Won t you join us? Did you know? In 1775 the Continental Congress allocated a time for prayer in forming a new nation. Over the years, there have been calls for a day of prayer, including from President Abraham Lincoln in On April 17, 1952, President Harry Truman signed a bill proclaiming The National Day of Prayer into law in the United States. President Reagan amended the law in 1988, designating the first Thursday of May each year as The National Day of Prayer. The National Prayer Committee was formed in the United States in It went on to create The National Day of Prayer Task Force, with the intended purpose of coordinating events each year. According to the Legal Information Institute, the President shall issue each year a proclamation designating the first Thursday in May as a National Day of Prayer on which the people of the United States may turn to God in prayer and meditation at churches, in groups, and as individuals. 7 -6- Fun Facts 1. There have been 144 national calls to prayer, fasting and thanksgiving by the President of the United States ( ). 2. There have been 67 Presidential Proclamations for a National Day of Prayer ( ). Gerald R. Ford (1976), George H. Bush ( ) and Barack H. Obama (2012) are the only U.S. Presidents to sign multiple National Day of Prayer Proclamations in the same year. 3. Every President since 1952 has signed a National Day of Prayer proclamation of the 44 U.S. Presidents have signed proclamations for National Prayer. Three of the Presidents who did not sign a proclamation died while serving in office. Two Presidents, not included in the count William Howard Taft and Warren Gamaliel Harding, signed proclamations for Thanksgiving and Prayer. 5. Records indicate there have been 1,419 state and federal calls for national prayer since 1775 and counting. THIS MAY 4th SOUTHERN CHESTER COUNTY will be observing National Day of Prayer at Penn Township Park Picnic Pavilion on Thursday, May 4th beginning at 6:30 PM. Contact Marge Pickel for more information. Our very own Tim Rupard and Min Pusey are scheduled to participate in leading prayers. SAVE THIS DATE and plan to come out to pray for our Nation, our Leaders, our Communities. Significance of the National Day of Prayer The National Day of Prayer has great significance for us as a nation as it enables us to recall and to teach the way in which our founding fathers sought the wisdom of God when faced with critical decisions. It stands as a call for us to humbly come before God, seeking His guidance for our leaders and His grace upon us as a people. The unanimous passage of the bill establishing the National Day of Prayer as an annual event, signifies that prayer is as important to our nation today as it was in the beginning. Like Thanksgiving or Christmas, this day has become a national observance placed on all Hallmark calendars and observed annually across the nation and in Washington, D.C. Every year, local, state, and federal observances were held from sunrise in Maine to sunset in Hawaii, uniting Americans from all socio-economic, political and ethnic backgrounds in prayer for our nation. It is estimated that over two million people attended more than 30,000 observances organized by approximately 40,000 volunteers. At state capitols, county court houses, on the steps of city halls, and in schools, businesses, churches and homes, people stopped their activities and gathered for prayer.
