I write to thank all of you who took part in our Advent & Christmas preparations and celebrations, in so many ways - Adults, Children, Benefactors (both within and outside of the Parish), and our Parish Staff. Whether it was through the offering of your time, talent, treasure, and/or presence at our Liturgies and social activities, the beauty that was experienced all around us would not have been so without you. I think you will all agree that our Children's participation in the Christmas Pageant and Family Masses, are particularly heartwarming and thrilling to experience. For those of you who are reading this who may not worship with us regularly, our Children and Young Adults bless us with that same pure and excited expression of our Catholic Faith every Sunday at our 9am Mass. They are an encouragement to us all that our Faith, brought to us in the Birth of the Baby Jesus, will continue on. On behalf of the Parish, my sincere thanks for your very generous contributions towards our Christmas Giving Tree, Christmas Flowers & Decorations, and our Christmas Collection. You allow the Church to continue to show its beauty both exteriorly - in the powerful Christmas symbols of decorations, and response to charitable outreaches; and interiorly - by allowing our ministries and the day-to-day life of the Parish to continue on, each day, week, and month of the year, until next Christmas! Yes, without a doubt, Jesus lives and remains in His Church always and forever - Emmanuel: God is with Us. But, beyond the 'physical structure' of the Church building, which you also so generously support - most recently, through your continuing contributions to the HVAC project - we must remember that we make up the Body of Christ, continuing His physical Presence in the World. Without us remaining a part of that Body - all of its parts being necessary - the Life of any Church or Parish would be very different. So, thank you for being a part of the lifeblood of this Parish, whether through your participation in one or another of the ministries of the Parish: Choir, Usher, Lector, Altar Server, Eucharistic Minister, etc., and/or as a worshipping and praying member of the congregation. Throughout this New Year, may you always know the gentle and peaceful Presence of the Baby Jesus whose Birth we just celebrated again, until we celebrate it anew with Him and one another. Thank you, again, for your generosity. Know that you are remembered daily in my Masses, Prayers, and evening reflections of thanksgiving. Please remember me in your Prayers. Gratefully in Christ, Monsignor Andreano Requiescat In Pace We were saddened to learn of the recent death of Deacon Primitivo Cruz, who served as a Permanent Deacon at the Parish for quite some years in the past. May he Rest In Peace. Please pray for the peaceful repose of his Soul, and the consolation of his family.

3 The Feast of The Baptism of Our Lord The mystery of Christ s baptism in the Jordan by St John, the Precursor, proposes the contemplation of an already adult Jesus. This mystery is infinitely linked to the Solemnities of the Lord s birth and the Epiphany that we have just celebrated, as in some ways it takes up and represents their significance to us. At Christmas we have contemplated the human birth of the Word incarnate by the Virgin Mary. In the 4th century, the Fathers of the Church deepened the understanding of the faith with regard to the Christmas mystery in the light of Jesus Humanity. They spoke of the Incarnation of the Word already working like the Christification of that humanity that he had assumed from His mother. Or put in simpler terms: Jesus is the Christ from the first instant of conception in Mary s spotless womb because He Himself, with His Divine Power, consecrated, anointed and Christified that human nature with which He became incarnate. In the mystery of the Epiphany, we then meditated on Christ s manifestation to all nations that was represented by the Magi, the wise men from the East, who came to adore the Child. Now, in the mystery of Christ s Baptism in the Jordan River, we again encounter and represent the truth of the Lord s incarnation and His manifestation as the Christ. Jesus Baptism is in fact His definitive manifestation as the Messiah or Christ to Israel, and as the Son of the Father to the entire world. Here we find the dimension of the Epiphany which was His manifestation to all nations. The Father s voice from heaven shows that Jesus of Nazareth is the eternal Son and the descent of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove shows the Trinitarian nature of the Christian God. The true and unique God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, shows Himself in Christ, through Him, with Him and in Him. The Baptism in the Jordan returns to the great Christmas theme of Christification, Jesus of Nazareth's spiritual anointing, His presentation as the Anointed One par excellence, the Messiah or the One sent by the Father for the salvation of mankind. The Spirit that descended on Jesus shows and seals in an incontrovertible way the Christification of Jesus humanity that the Word had already fulfilled from the first moment of His miraculous conception by Mary. Jesus, from the very beginning, was always the Lord s Christ, He was always God. Yet, His one, true humanity, that which is perfect in every way, as the Gospel records, constantly grew in natural and supernatural perfection. And Jesus increased in wisdom, in stature, and in favour with God and with men (Lk2:52). In Israel at 30 years of age, one reached full maturity and therefore could become a master. Jesus came of age and the Spirit, descending and remaining on Him, definitively consecrated His whole being as the Christ. The same Spirit, that descended on the water of the River Jordan wafted over the waters during the first creation (Gen 1:2). Therefore, the Baptism in the Jordan presents yet another truth: that Jesus has started a new creation. He is the second man (1 Cor 15:47) or the last Adam (1 Cor 15:45), that comes to repair the first Adam s guilt. He does this as the Lamb of God that takes away our sins. Looking at the events in light of the Cross and Resurrection, the Christian people realised what happened: Jesus loaded the burden of all mankind s guilt upon His shoulders; he bore it down into the depths of the Jordan. He inaugurated his public activity by stepping into the place of sinners (Joseph Ratzinger, Jesus of Nazareth, Bloomsbury 2007, p 18). 4 A Closer Look at our 7 Newest Saints THIS PAST OCTOBER, Pope Francis canonized seven new saints St. Pope Paul VI Giovanni Battista Montini was born in northern Italy in He was a student of literature, philosophy, and Canon Law. He worked for the Vatican for much of his life, then was named archbishop of Milan. He was named a cardinal in 1958 by Pope St. John XXIII, and five years later was elected as his successor to the papacy. Pope Paul VI continued and then concluded the Second Vatican Council; this was his greatest accomplishment. He was one of the first popes in many years to leave Rome. He visited the Holy Land in 1964 and later made eight more international trips. He was a hardworking diplomat across the world and wrote many encyclical letters. His two most important encyclicals were on the prohibition of birth control (Humanae Vitae) and evangelization in the modern world (Evangelii Nuntiandi). Both of these works, and a biography, are linked below. In humble obedience then to her voice, let Christian husbands and wives be mindful of their vocation to the Christian life, a vocation which, deriving from their Baptism, has been confirmed anew and made more explicit by the Sacrament of Matrimony. For by this sacrament they are strengthened and, one might almost say, consecrated to the faithful fulfillment of their duties. Thus will they realize to the full their calling and bear witness as becomes them, to Christ before the world. [See GS, no. 48] For the Lord has entrusted to them the task of making visible to men and women the holiness and joy of the law which united inseparably their love for one another and the cooperation they give to God s love, God who is the Author of human life. Saint Pope Paul VI St. Oscar Romero From 1977 until his death, Oscar Romero was archbishop of San Salvador, El Salvador. In a time of political unrest and injustice in his country, Romero was an outspoken opponent. He was not, however, a proponent of liberation theology, which was condemned by Pope St. John Paul II. On March 24, 1980, while saying Mass, Oscar Romero was shot and killed by assassins. Pope Francis declared him a martyr in 2015 and beatified him in the same year in El Salvador in front of a crowd of over 250,000 people. The violence we preach is not the violence of the sword, the violence of hatred. It is the violence of love, of brotherhood, the violence that wills to beat weapons into sickles for work. Saint Oscar Romero St. Vincenzo Romano Father Romano was a parish priest near Naples, Italy. He became a priest in He was given the nickname The Worker Priest because of his efforts for his people, especially the poor. In 1794, Mount Vesuvius destroyed most of his hometown, Torre del Greco, which he himself helped to rebuild. He was known for his simplistic manner of life and for his love and care of his people. St. Nazaria Ignacia March Mesa Nazaria Ignacia was born in Madrid, Spain and joined the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Abandoned Elderly at the age of 19 in Mexico. However, she was called to the religious life at the early age of 9. She later went to Bolivia to care for the elderly. She founded the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Pontifical Crusade later in her life which took her to Spain, Uruguay, and Argentina. This congregation sought to proclaim the Gospel and promote the dignity of the human person. St. Francesco Spinelli Father Spinelli was born in Milan, Italy. He helped to establish the Congregation of the Sacramentine Sisters of Bergamo with St. Geltrude Comensoli devoted to the Eucharistic and especially Eucharistic devotion. In Cremona, Italy he later founded the Sisters Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament which now have houses in South America and Africa. St. Maria Katharina Kasper Maria Kasper was born in Dernbach, Germany in She wanted to join religious life but was unable to join for many years because of her family s economic situation. However, in 1851, she was finally able to establish the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ to care for the poor, especially children and those suffering illness. The sisters made their way to the United States in 1868 and came to Indiana. There are now congregation houses in the United States, Europe, Mexico, India, Brazil, Kenya, and Nigeria. St. Nunzio Sulprizio Nunzio was born in 1817 and died in 1836 at the age of 19. He became an apprentice blacksmith. However, he was tragically crippled in one leg by his physically abusive uncle. With another uncle, he moved to Naples and had to have his leg amputated because of bone cancer. The people of Naples loved the boy because of his care for the poor and sick. He offered his intense suffering in patience and love to Christ. SOURCE: Written By Will Wright via Catholic Link

5 NEW MEN'S GROUP! FAITH FORMATION Ss. Peter & Paul Men's Group Do you have an interest in deepening your faith? Perhaps you would like to enrich your prayer life. Or maybe have a forum to discuss Scripture and its relevance in today s world. Here at SPP we are considering launching a Men s Group that will meet monthly, and provide an environment to address these areas while also enabling you to get to know some of your fellow parishioners. The core focus of the meetings will be: Centering Prayer (you may know it as contemplative prayer or meditation). The second element will be Lectio Divina, where we will prayerfully read a short passage from the Bible, and then discuss it as a group. A more detailed explanation will be provided at the first meeting. And a brief summary will be given each month before we begin in case of new attendees, etc. The format of the meetings will be to gather around 6:30, for some social time, with Centering Prayer and then later Lectio Divina to begin at 7. We will conclude at 8. All men over 21 of the Parish are welcome, whether or not you are Catholic. The group would meet on the first Thursday of each month here at SPP, with the first meeting tentatively planned for February 7. To help us gauge interest, please contact Michael Duffy at swcoffee1@gmail.com, to let us know if you would be interested in participating. As you know, we already have a Women's Group - Women of Faith - which has developed wonderfully and meets weekly. Please consider taking advantage of this Adult Faith Formation opportunity for Men of the Parish, which will start off by meeting monthly, as interest allows. VOLUNTEER NEEDED! RESPECT LIFE COORDINATOR The Parish is in need of a Respect Life Coordinator to lead the 20/20 Campaign as directed by the Archdiocese. The 20/20 Campaign is an approved postcard campaign designed to ask our NJ State Senators and Assembly Members to support legislation that would ban abortions after 20 weeks (5 months) by passing the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (A-1686/S-537) by the year All materials have been supplied and prepared by the Respect Life Office in the Archdiocese. Please contact Elizabeth at the Parish Office if you are interested in being a Respect Life Coordinator for Saints Peter and Paul. elizabeth.ertel@spphoboken.com Adult Faith Formation Opportunites Women of Faith When do we meet? It s more secure than giving by cash or check, both of which can get lost, stolen or mis-tracked. Online gifts through FaithDirect are secure and sent directly to the parish s bank account. It creates faithful giving: recurring gifts help you make giving a priority. For the parish it makes income more predictable, budget planning an easier process and keeps giving consistent. It reduces the administrative burden of the parish financial team. It eliminates the printing, mailing, processing and recording of donations of the envelope system. Faith Direct allows you to track your donations and access tax statements as any time. ENROLLMENT Creating an account is simple.
