4 OCTOBER THE MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY Tradition holds that October has been celebrated as the month of the rosary since 1571, and the victory of the Catholic League (an alliance of Spain, Venice, the Papal States, Genoa, Savoy, and Malta) over the forces of the Ottoman Empire who were seeking to take over Italy in an effort to move into the heart of Europe. It was October 7, 1571 when the battle was fought and the Catholic League was able to overcome the Ottoman forces. Prior to the ships sailing off towards battle, Pope Pius V prayed the rosary, asking for Our Lady s intercession in victory, and every man on board carried a rosary. For this reason, as soon as the men returned from the battle, the good pope declared a feast day for Our Lady of Victory. A rosary procession was offered in St. Peter s square after the victory and in time the whole month became associated with the rosary, rather than just one day. Pope Leo XIII officially established October as the Month of the Rosary in the That year, he published Superiore Anno, an encyclical which was focused on recitation of the holy rosary. In it, he called for the entire Church to dedicate the whole of the month to the rosary and pray it daily: Last year, as each of you is aware, We decreed by an Encyclical Letter that, to win the help of Heaven for the Church in her trials, the great Mother of God should be honored by the means of the most holy Rosary during the whole of the month of October. In this We followed both Our own impulse and the example of Our predecessors, who in times of difficulty were wont to have recourse with increased fervor to the Blessed Virgin, and to seek her aid with special prayers We therefore decree and make order that from the 1st of October to the 2nd of November following in all the parish churches, in all public churches dedicated to the Mother of God, or in such as are appointed by the Ordinary, five decades at least of the Rosary be recited, together with the Litany. If in the morning, the Holy Sacrifice will take place during these prayers; if in the evening, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for the adoration of the faithful; after which those present will receive the customary Benediction. We desire that, wherever it be lawful, the local confraternity of the Rosary should make a solemn procession through the streets as a public manifestation of religious devotion. The encyclical referenced churches named for the Blessed Virgin, especially, and was written in response to an illness that was spreading in Europe, emphasizing that Europe s need for intercession was particularly great. Still, the decree was meant for all of the Catholic Church and the practice continued for most of the next century. However, in more recent years devotion to the rosary overall has not been what it once was, and so interest in celebrating October as Month of the Rosary has waned as well. Many churches, whether named for Mary or not, do not have a public rosary throughout the month and there has not been much publicized about reviving this. In part, this seems to have come about due to some misconceptions after the Second Vatican Council concluded. One aim of the council was to ensure that Marian devotion remained balanced. Church documents reiterated the value of Marian devotion, but also reemphasized the truth of her role as an obedient servant to God: Therefore the Blessed Virgin is invoked by the Church under the titles of Advocate, Auxiliatrix, Adjutrix, and Mediatrix. This, however, is to be so understood that it neither takes away from nor adds anything to the dignity and efficaciousness of Christ the one Mediator. For no creature could ever be counted as equal with the Incarnate Word and Redeemer. (Lumen Gentium - Pope Paul VI, 1964) Abolition of the rosary, Mariology, or devotion to Mary was never the intent of the Second Vatican Council. The council in fact recommended fervent devotion to Mary and never said anything against the rosary. However an evening Mass replaced some evening services that had previously included Marian devotions, and the faithful were expected to no longer pray the rosary during Mass (which was not uncommon to see in a Latin Mass in the early 60s and before) but to participate in the Mass by attending to what was taking place at the altar. Many assumed that these things together were implications that Marian devotion should be repressed. This was not true, but there was some decline in devotion to the rosary during those next few decades. Interest in the rosary began to be revived when in 2002, Pope John Paul II gave the world 5 new mysteries on which to meditate, and reiterated the value of the rosary as Christological prayer at its core. The world was in need of someone to speak out and encourage the rosary as a form of devotion again, and Pope John Paul II did this. It seems that devotion to the Blessed Mother through the rosary is increasing again. However, October as Month of the Rosary still does not enjoy the full participation by the faithful it once did. This October would be a great time to work on changing that. Source:

5 11 THINGS THAT HAPPEN when you commit to going to CONFESSION MORE REGULARLY Written By: Ruth Baker via CatholicLink.com As Catholics, we are required to go to Confession once a year, but why stop there? We know Confession can be daunting or difficult, and there might be many reasons why you don t want to go. However, regular Confession, whether it be monthly, every two weeks, or weekly, doesn t have to be scary. In fact, it is life changing and life giving! Here we share 11 amazing things that happen when you go to Confession more often. 1. You Gain a Healthy Knowledge of Your Sin Regular Confession helps you recognize the little sins as well as the big, dramatic ones. You can see patterns, you can identify seams of weakness. You can pinpoint attitudes, not just actions, that are damaging. Rather than Confession being a oncea-year-momentous shot of grace (which we still encourage!), regular Confession truly allows you to dig deep and get to the root of long-standing habits of sin. 2. You Are More Compassionate with Others Shortcomings When you are aware that you commit the same sins again and again, you become far more accepting of other people s failings. The annoying person in the office, the sibling you always argue with, the student you teach that winds you up. All become humanized again. You recognize you have your failings, they have theirs. Like you, they probably have a myriad of different and painful reasons as to why they behave as they do. You are no better than them. They are no better than you. 3. You Can Begin to Forgive Others Especially Deep Wounds I m not suggesting that this one happens immediately, but I have noticed that an increase in regular Confession has helped me begin to find forgiveness for some very painful wounds in my life. When we realize that we ourselves draw comfort and solace from Christ on the Cross, we realize that we don t get to decide who receives the mercy that comes from Jesus sacrifice. When we really love Jesus, we would never wish His sacrifice to be in vain. We can therefore put the act of forgiveness over those we hate into His hands, setting ourselves free in the process. 4. You Get to Experience a Wide Range of the Church s Ministry If possible, it is a really good habit to try and seek out a good priest who you can see regularly for Confession. This way he can get to know you and help you see patterns and attitudes over time. However, making the habit of regular Confession means that you re more likely to feel comfortable popping into a random church that you re passing, or joining the queue at a retreat or Catholic conference, and this way you can experience a wide range of different priests. All priests are different, and though the Sacrament of Confession will be absolutely the same each time, the advice, insight, intuition and penance will be different depending on who you see. This can be really interesting and helpful! Different priests will be able to pinpoint different things, and assure you of God s mercy in ways that you had never thought of before. Don t be afraid of an impromptu Confession with a different priest! 5. You Gain a Working Understanding of God s Mercy Regular Confession is not intended to make you scrupulous. Rather, when you go to Confession and repeat the same sins again and again, you see that God s mercy is ever fresh, ever new, and always abundant. He is always patient with us. 6. You Become More Patient with Yourself A priest once told me, Don t worry about repeating the same sins again and again in Confession be grateful that there are no new sins to add! Confession helps us realize what our failings are, and that often, if it weren t those particular sins, it would be something else. Knowing our sins is always a grace. When we know them, we can ask God to come in and triumph over them. We can be patient, knowing that, in good time, God will heal our wounds. 7. Deep Personal Wounds Start to Heal and Acts of Grace Abound God always honors someone who persistently and patiently offers up their failings to Him and humbly asks for help. Confession is like cleaning and redressing a wound. The wound may not heal immediately, but it is never going to heal at all if it is not regularly cleaned and carefully redressed. Over time, the repeated cleaning and care for the wound eventually heals it. For years, I mentioned my poor drinking habits in Confession nearly every time I went. I was at a loss to know how to fix my addiction. But I knew I had to mention it each time. Eventually, I was given an amazing moment of grace and I haven t touched alcohol again. The next time I went to Confession I was stunned. I didn t need to mention it! Looking back, I could see how God had worked with me and through me, even when I was in despair at ever being healed. 8. Your Personal Relationship with Jesus Grows Only a sinner needs a savior. The more we recognize our sin, the more we realize we need a Savior, and the more we need a Savior, the more personal our relationship with Jesus becomes. Confession is a Sacrament, there are few ways that we can meet Jesus more personally than in Confession and the Eucharist, of course! Christ comes into our soul, sees that we are suffering, acknowledges our humility and sorrow, takes us by the hand, picks us up, dusts us down, and sets us on our feet again with dignity. 9. Your Reception of the Eucharist is Clarified The purer the state of our souls, the more we can see clearly. Regular Confession means we are in a better state of grace to receive the Eucharist and can more lovingly, carefully, and reverently welcome Jesus into our hearts, and be far more receptive to His voice in our lives. In knowing His mercy on a regular basis, we grow in love for Him and gratitude for the Institution of the Eucharist which He left us with. 10. You Start to Seek Integrity in All You Do When you commit to regular Confession, you start to see habits and attitudes which lead to sin. Light gets into the dark places that you d prefer to stay hidden, but that isn t as scary as it sounds. You start to really want to live your life with integrity in all things, and you see that Confession and life isn t about simply not sinning. It is about living alongside Jesus, so that His heart directs your heart, and all your actions orientate themselves to Him. We find peace when our lives are centered on Him, not on ourselves. That doesn t mean thinking less of ourselves, but, rather, thinking of ourselves less, and Him more. 11. You Want to Go Back! When you ve committed to regular Confession, you start to notice if you haven t been in a long time. This may not be in any dramatic way, but you might start to notice a dragging feeling, a heaviness of heart, or a sense that things need putting back to rights. Confession is never easy to go to, it s often not a pleasant prospect until it s over, it is hard to do. But regular Confession does make the process easier. It means we are more likely to run into the loving arms of a forgiving Father when we know we ve messed up, and it takes away the annual fear-factor of going. We realize how precious a sacrament Confession is, and that we should never take it, or our priests, for granted.

6 Why Faith Direct is better than envelopes Currently a portion of our collection is electronic: a simpler, safer and more predictable way for our parish to collect your contribution: It s safer than checks or cash. It s more secure than giving by cash or check, both of which can get lost, stolen or mis-tracked. Online gifts through FaithDirect are secure and sent directly to the parish s bank account. It creates faithful giving: recurring gifts help you make giving a priority. For the parish it makes income more predictable, budget planning an easier process and keeps giving consistent. It reduces the administrative burden of the parish financial team. It eliminates the printing, mailing, processing and recording of donations of the envelope system. Faith Direct allows you to track your donations and access tax statements as any time. ENROLLMENT Creating an account is simple. You can enroll online or by mail, so you can give to your church in a way that works best for you. GIVING OPTIONS Give to any collection offered by your church; choose your credit/debit card or a bank account for payment. Schedule monthly recurring gifts or make a one-time gift anytime. ENROLL ONLINE TODAY AT Parish Code: NJ627 Sharing God s Blessings 2018 Annual Appeal Thanks to all of our parishioners who have made their gift to the 2018 Sharing God s Blessings Annual Appeal towards our goal. If you have not yet made a gift or pledge, please fill out a commitment card located in the pews or in the lobby of the church. Please help support the many programs and ministries that assist so many in our community. Let s pray for our departed loved ones... ALL SOULS DAY Eternal Rest Grant onto them O Lord, and let perpetual Light shine upon them. Amen. Memorial Candles As you know, November is the month that the Church traditionally dedicates to the memory of our beloved dead, beginning with the Memorial Feast of All Souls Day, November 2. The Parish introduces a new way of memorializing your loved ones by offering to burn a (real!) Candle in their name for the entire month of November. To accomplish this, a new Candle stand display will be set up next to the Tabernacle where the Candles will be situated, each labeled with the name of the deceased loved one that you indicate. The requested donation for each month long memorialization is $75 (approximately $2.50/day). If you are interested in this special All Souls Memorial, please obtain a Form from the Church Lobby or Parish Office to provide the following information for each Candle, and return it with your donation: Your name, telephone number, and/or address; Name of deceased person to be memorialized on the Candle. In order that we can prepare and label the Candles, please respond no later than Sunday, October 21. The plan is to have a Candle lighting and placement service within the 7pm Mass on the evening of the Solemnity of All Saints Day, Thursday, November 1, a Holy Day of Obligation. In this way, the Candles will be lit and in place for the Masses on All Souls Day, Friday, November 2. They will remain lit and be replaced with new Candles, labeled with your loved one's name, throughout the Month. GOD BLESS YOU. May the Souls of the Faithful Departed, through the Mercy of God, Rest In Peace. Amen.
