Our people are our greatest asset (That s why we are downsizing them to increase the value of our company.) Our children are our future (That s why we underfund education and burden young people with debt.) And on it goes. There are many other examples where the messages we receive each day, don t square with the reality we experience. On a regular basis, we encounter mendacity or untruthfulness. Well, that s life you might say. Yes, sort of, but where does that leave us? But wait, there s more. The society in which we live and indeed our culture, aided by modern technology, is making us less equipped to deal with this somewhat distorted reality. We are bombarded with messages, often from quite an early age, that says you re special, you re entitled, you deserve it, don t settle for second best. And while I m a big fan of affirmation and encouragement, my sense is that our egos are being inflated, in large part so that we will be more susceptible and easier marks for the various commercial products and services on offer. Also, our political leaders are no slouches too at playing up our importance. How often have we heard a politician begin with: the American people are entitled to (you fill in the blanks). It usually turns out that we are entitled to whatever position they are promoting. Unfortunately, with all of this pumping up of our egos, there can be a tendency to expect everything our way regardless of circumstance. And when our expectations are not met, such as in the scenarios outlined up front, our egos are affronted and often we respond with disappointment, frustration, even anger and if we re not careful, cynicism. So what s the answer: are we to settle for second best; not challenge an untruth; be a door mat for whatever is sent our way? Definitely not! So what then? To perhaps oversimplify, we must become adult Christians (or adults in whatever faith you practice). That is, we cannot let our egos, our emotions, rule us. Living in the affluent society we do, this is no small feat. Everything mitigates against humility, graciousness, and the greater good. There s a brilliant example of how we might think of this in the movie Gandhi. As he tries to lead the people of India to independence from the British, Gandhi accumulates tremendous power. His response is not to move into a palace, recruit an army or emphasize his importance to the cause. Instead, he fasts more, prays more, tries to live a more humble and virtuous existence, so that he neither gets caught up in his power, nor succumbs to the anger and violence gripping India. Perhaps closer to home as it were, we see Jesus provide a similar example in the Gospels. To let go of everything that separates us from God. While letting go and loving your neighbor make sense, they are certainly easier said than done, especially when faced with the many irritants we encounter daily. Often our response to the frustrations of our lives is to have a drink, eat comfort food, get a massage, and so on. And while none of these are bad, and they may give us temporary respite, there s an underlying challenge here to grow as a person, and in our relationship with God. So when the tensions in our lives mount, we might want to think about a little more time in prayer, perhaps reading the bible or a good uplifting book and maybe even volunteering some of our time. Our egos (that got us into this state in the first place) would probably prefer comfort food, etc. but we are called to be more. And while most of us may not be up for becoming Gandhis, to paraphrase the rock group Coldplay, we can ensure we are part of the cure (for societies ailments) rather than part of the disease.

The Lower Rectory NEXT MEETING: MARCH 5 For more information please contact Michael Duffy swcoffee1@gmail.com was riding in a car with my son, Simon, recently I and we started trading jokes. He s 12. What do you call a deer with no eyes? he asked. No-eye-deer. What do you get when you cross an elephant with a rhino? I responded. Ell if I know. What do you call a fish with no eyes? he came back. Fsh. A good joke sticks with you. That eleph-ino joke has been rattling around in my brain for decades. And now, the chuckle it sparked in my son has planted that same chain of words somewhere deep in the folds of the grey-pink machine churning under his skull. Someday he ll bring it out and hand it on to someone else. Just like I m passing along his noeye-deer to you. We receive and pass along more of ourselves than we know. Some things, like a good joke, we hold on to and share with intent they are little crowbars that we wedge under each other s feet to lift them up an inch or two. After my grandpa died, whenever my grandma felt down or low or sorry for her life, she d make cookies and lemonade and go visit someone. Knowing that she did that makes me want to be more generous and resilient. And in the desiring of those good things I find them. It doesn t take much living to know that we hand on ugly things, too. Our scars skew our vision and hobble our steps, and we usually don t realize we ve stepped on someone s toes until it s too late. It s impossible to underestimate how often this happens when you are raising children. They are experts at exposing hidden values and vulnerabilities raw, tender places in your heart you carried around with blissful ignorance until they poke at them in their innocence and it feels like they are stirring up an anthill inside you. Anger gushes out, then shame, then regret that you are tracing your same scars in them. We Hand On That Which Marks Us It s the old therapy adage: hurt people hurt people. We tend to inflict the same kind of pain we ve received. But the opposite can be true, too, right? We love others in the way we ve been loved, don t we? The words and experiences that speak to us leave a mark. When we encounter other people, isn t that what we re looking for? We re trying to read the shape and color of each other s interior life not in a skeptical or accusatory way, but with curiosity. We re always asking, Who is this person? What are they about? Having bumped into one another, we walk away with smudges. As a parent, underneath all the day-to-day tasks of getting kids to and from practices and games and homework and dinner and laundry, my deepest hope is that we mark them with faith and hope and love. That usually has very little to do with what we say. It usually is something that is communicated and received by what we do and, more fundamentally, how we do it. So what would happen if we paid attention to those invisible things we give away to our kids? And what if we began looking for ways to be marked by them, in turn? St. Teresa of Avila said that if you are feeling indifferent about your interior life, seek out people who are better than you and spend time with them. Goodness is sticky it rubs off on us. Something deep inside us recognizes goodness in others we can smell it just as surely as we can smell good food, and it awakens a desire in us. Our hearts are hungry and they want to grow what if we fed them with rich, robust examples? What if we searched for goodness in one another and feasted together? We organize our day around food for our bodies we plan our meals, we shop for groceries, we eat our vegetables. Shouldn t we give at least as much thought to how we nourish our spirits? We live on more than bread alone isn t that true? Source: by Josh Noem

5 WHY WE WORSHIP Ash Wednesday Wednesday March 6 Schedule of Liturgies T here is a Latin maxim that addresses the centrality of worship in the life, identity and mission of the Catholic Church; Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi. The phrase in Latin literally means the law of prayer ( the way we worship ) is the law of belief ( what we believe ). It is sometimes expanded to lex orandi, lex credendi, lex vivendi, further deepening the implications of this truth how we worship reflects what we believe and determines how we will live our lives. The Catholic Church has long understood the importance of formal worship when Christians gather together. The early Church took their times of formal worship quite seriously. Any study of our tradition shows formal worship present in the writings of the first few centuries such as the Didache (the teaching of the twelve). Liturgy was not a later addition, but was at the very heart of the early church and her worship. How we worship reveals and guards what we believe and guides us living our Christian life. We were made to worship and as we worship we are transformed. Worship helps us comprehend and fulfill our Christian mission in the world by manifesting the continuing presence of the Risen Jesus Christ in the heart of the Church, which is His Body. Liturgical worship is not an add on for a Catholic Christian. It is the foundation of Catholic identity; expressing our highest purpose. The word liturgy actually means the work of the faithful. Worship reveals what we truly believe and how we view ourselves in relationship to God, one another and the world into which we are sent to carry forward the redemptive mission of Jesus Christ. When we read the last book of the Bible, the Book of Revelation, we are presented with a vision of worship in heaven, it is profoundly liturgical. None of this is meant to say that informal worship is not important. There are many ways to worship the Lord privately and in groups. However, how the Church worships when she gathers for formal Liturgy is a prophetic witness to the truth of what she professes. Good worship becomes a dynamic means of drawing the entire human community into the fullness of life in Jesus Christ. It attracts through beauty to Beauty. Liturgical worship informs and transforms the person and the worshipping community which participates in it. There is reciprocity between worship and life. It is hoped that in every parish, the faithful experience vibrant, symbolic, faithful, richly liturgical, devout fullness of Catholic worship, faith and life. The Sunday Experience is the most important thing a parish does every week everything else is extra. Pope Benedict XVI once wrote, Worship cannot come from our imagination: that would be a cry in the darkness or mere selfaffirmation. True liturgy supposes that God responds and shows us how we can adore Him. The Church lives in His presence and its reason for being and existing is to expand His presence in the world. Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi. Lex Vivendi. As we worship, so we will believe and so we will live our lives in the Lord for the sake of the world.
