LAWSON BRYAN SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23 10:55 A.M. SERVICE Sunday, we have the great privilege of welcoming to St. Luke the new resident bishop of the South Georgia Episcopal Area, Bishop Lawson Bryan and his wife Sherrill. Bishop Bryan was elected to the episcopal office on July 13 of this year during the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference at Lake Junaluska, NC. Bishops are charged by our church s Book of Discipline to lead and oversee the spiritual and temporal affairs of the church and to guard, transmit, teach and proclaim, corporately and individually, the apostolic faith as it is expressed in Scripture and tradition, and as they are endowed by the Spirit, to interpret that faith evangelically and prophetically. After his assignment to the South Georgia Annual Conference on September 1, Bishop Bryan said, I thank God for the opportunity to serve alongside the faithful laity and clergy of the South Georgia Annual Conference. My connections to the conference go all the way back to childhood. And it is not lost on me that South Georgia includes the area where John and Charles Wesley landed in America and where they worked for several years. Sherrill and I thank the conference for the radical hospitality that has already been extended to us. Thank you for your prayers as we make an exciting transition to the wonderful South Georgia Conference. Before his election, Bishop Bryan served at every level of leadership in the United Methodist Church. In the Alabama West Florida Annual Conference, he served as the pastor of churches in Opelika, Panama City, Brewton, Mobile, and Dothan. For the nine years immediately prior to being elected to the episcopacy, he served as the Senior Pastor of First United Methodist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.
