Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. May we strive together to work for justice, And show respect to every person we meet. May we freely share in your desire for fullness of life for all. Amen. 5 The Peace Blessed are those who make peace, they shall be called children of God. We meet in God s name and share God s peace. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be always with you. Lord our God We give you thanks and praise James 2:14-24 Equality in Christ What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill, and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. But someone will say, You have faith and I have works. Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe and shudder. Do you want to be shown, you senseless person, that faith without works is barren? Was not our ancestor Abraham justified by works when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was brought to completion by the works. Thus the scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness, and he was called the friend of God. You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. Hear the Word of the Lord Thanks be to God Gradual Hymn The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke, reading from chapter 4, commencing a the 16th verse Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ When Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord s favour. And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 6 Affirmation of Faith We believe in God, in whom there is power and compassion. We believe in the Creator who gave birth to the universe, set the solar systems dancing in space, shaped molecules and mountains, and conceived beauty beyond our imagining. God s power topples tyrants, and brings down the walls of separation; God s love embodies the tenderness of a mother and a father, encouraging and caring for each of us. We believe in Jesus, born in obscurity in an occupied land; a human being, vulnerable to hunger, thirst, persecution and grief. He understood the power of love and confronted the powers of evil, spoke the truth with courage and clarity, forgave his enemies and changed lives. In his living, dying and rising again he showed love strong enough to save the world. We believe in the Holy Spirit who sustains, comforts and empowers us, opens the scriptures, opens our minds, and illuminates earth s darkness. Amen. We thank you, God, for trusting us to share in the mission of your Church. Bless us with wisdom to do our work well. We thank you for the pioneers and benefactors of Anglicare who began the ministries that are carried on to day. Make all the Church faithful in keeping their vision alive. We thank you for the skills and experience of the Anglicare board members and leadership team. Bless them with insight and energy as they work together. We thank you for the dedication and compassion of Anglicare staff who work closely with clients. Bless them with gentleness, resilience and love. We thank you for the volunteers who work with Anglicare, and for the time and care and skills they offer. Bless them with strength and refreshment in their labours. We thank you for everything that is received and learnt from the people Anglicare serves. Bless the Church with grace to see Christ s face in all your children. We thank you for the shared work of parishes and Anglicare, addressing the needs and hopes of local communities. Bless them with a common sense of your love for all people.
