We conducted successful membership drives at, OLQP and St. Christopher s/smm where our members shared their experiences with gentlemen interested in learning about the Knights of Columbus. Please contact Bob Bauer regarding our next drive at St. Charles the weekend of November7 th and 8 th. We can use as many volunteers to help us reach more and more Catholic men and ladies. We welcomed three new Knights in October: Dennis Stephens, Rodolfo Clarke and John Moore, we are honored that these men have decided to join us on their journey into Knighthood. We look forward to their new ideas and their contagious enthusiasm. Please extend a hand and welcome them at our next meeting. October 24 th we hosted a successful Halloween Party, approx. 60 Ghouls, Goblins, Witches and Scarecrows spent the night drinking, dancing, eating and having a lot of fun. I would like to thank the following for all their help in making this a fun night; John Czirr, Frank Alessio, Jim Neese, Ed Thatcher, James DeFrancesco and Angelo Fusaro, MaryAnne Alessio and my wife Cathy Gonzalez. Special thanks go out to Annette Fusaro for her remarkable basket creations that were the talk of the evening. On the 3 rd Anniversary of Sandy we helped our neighbors from the NDB Civic Association Light up the Beach at a service to remember all those that were lost during that terrible storm. We continue to partner with our neighbors and improve our area. October saw Manresa lose two men who were a part of our culture for a very long time. John Tiplady a member for over 40 years and our former Youth Coordinator lost a valiant battle to cancer. John was a true Knight in every sense of the word and he will be missed. Msgr. James Dorney, our former Chaplain and co-vicar of Staten Island Catholics passed as well in October. His bright smile and quick wit came along with a deep appreciation for all people from all walks of life. He was a true leader and a man of faith, he will surely be missed. The month of November brings us The Ralph Valente/ Carl Demant Blood Drive on Nov 7 th from 8:30 to 2:30; please contact PGK Jim Neese for more details. The Blood Drive was important to Ralph and Carl; let s honor them by supporting the drive. November is the month of All Souls and we will honor our members who have passed with a Memorial Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes, Tuesday, November 17th at 7:30 pm, please make every effort to attend to pray for our departed Brothers and Sisters. November also brings our Annual ND Gamewatch Nov 14 th 2:30 pm. Come on down and support St. Peter-St. Paul School while having lots of fun in the process (see flyer). Continued on Page 2
2 Continued from Page 1 November 21, we will conduct our Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, what better way to help our community than to provide delicious, nutritious food for those in need. Please contact DGK Ed Thatcher to sign up. This drive provides much needed food for St. Margaret Mary s Jim Regan Food Pantry. Jim was a driving force in establishing this food pantry and was an active friend of Manresa Council. Looking ahead to December see the flyer for our Adult Christmas Party on December 12 at 8pm and our Children s Christmas Party on Sunday December 13 at 1 pm. With Santa, gifts, food and entertainment! PGK Bob Bauer is selling Christmas themed magnets and lawn signs. Please contact him to purchase these simple signs that convey a powerful message about the true meaning of Christmas. We are currently developing an interactive Council website that will provide a wealth of information to our members. I m excited about it and we will be able to get our message out to our members and potential members like never before, so stay tuned. Winter time we will do our best to get you out of hibernation with Trivia Night and Game Night. Finally, on behalf of my wife Cathy and me, we would like to wish all of you a happy and healthy Thanksgiving. While you are surrounded by family and love, please keep those less fortunate in mind. 3 COLUMBIETTES PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dear Sister Columbiettes, Wow! November is here already, and before we know it the holidays will be upon us and with that comes treasured moments with family and friends. How appropriate then that November begins with All Soul s Day, which gives us a special day to remember those who have passed on. In addition to our loved ones, I would like to ask that you please also remember Joan Youngberg, NYS Past President and Monsignor James Dorney, co-vicar of Staten Island and Pastor Emeritus of St. Peter s Church. Both of these very special people touched many lives and were shining examples of how our faith can shape us and the lives of those we encounter. Please remember their families in your prayers as well. It was announced at our October meeting that I recently received notice from our Financial Secretary, Maria Cannella, that she would be resigning from her position. In light of that, there will be a special election at our November 11 meeting. Annette Fusaro's name has been entered for the position, and nominations will be accepted from the floor. I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Maria for all of her work as Financial Secretary over the past several years. We all truly appreciate your dedication and everything you've done for our auxiliary! At our last meeting we also hosted a 1 st Degree, and we welcomed two new members Maureen Roe and Melissa Timmins We also welcomed Joyce Treglia who transferred from Madonna Auxiliary. Maureen, Melissa and Joyce, we are all very happy to have you become a part of the Manresa family and look forward to working with you! During the next two weekends, we will be joining Manresa Knights at Membership Drives being held at several of our local parishes. This weekend (October 31 & Nov 1) we will be at the Masses at both St. Christopher s Church and St. Margaret Mary s Church. The weekend of November 7 & 8 will be at St. Charles Church. All of the Mass details are in the I sent earlier this week. PLEASE volunteer for 1 or 2 Masses. Growing our membership is key to the continued success of our auxiliary and will help us continue to do the good work we ve always done. Please or call me to let me know what Mass you will be able to join us for. As of this writing, I have 3 volunteers for St. Christopher s. Our first social night/fundraiser will be a Swap Bingo on Friday, November 6 at 7pm. Admission is $5 and includes coffee, cake and 1 BINGO card. To play, you MUST bring a $15 gift card of your choice. The bar will be open and serving food, so please join us for a fun night! Come for a casual dinner & drinks & stay for BINGO & dessert! Please keep selling those C&B books, and be sure to return them to the Annette Fusaro and Jean Gray, C&B Committee Chairladies PRIOR to the start of our November meeting! Reminder that SI Chapter Columbiettes Comedy Night is just around the corner, on Friday, November 20 at the Looney Bin, $20 per person. Contact Pattie for reservations (BattlinBat2@aol.com or ). This is the main fundraiser of the year for Chapter and it would be great to see a nice turnout from Manresa. All are welcome, so consider putting together a table of friends! It is very important for us to support our Chapter Columbiettes, as they support us. Manresa Knights will be holding a Christmas Party on Saturday, December 12. Additional details can be found in the flyer also found in this month s Revue. On behalf of my husband, Jim and our family, I would like to wish each of you a very Happy Thanksgiving and I hope that you are all surrounded by the love of family and friends. Thank you all for your support and great suggestions and ideas! I look forward to seeing you at Swap Bingo!!! Warm regards, Cathy Gonzalez President cathygonz9565@aol.com
4 Only Having Insurance Through Work Doesn t Work Do you know anyone whose life or career has drastically changed during these years of economic downturn? It s very likely that someone in your immediate or extended family or group of friends is facing financial uncertainty. Maybe there s a possibility that you (or your spouse) could lose your job or change employers. Too many people have often relied on group term life insurance as their only safety net. Often, this insurance is an employee benefit provided at low or no cost. The existence of this coverage might convince someone that personally-owned life insurance is not necessary. But only having through work insurance can leave you and your family vulnerable. Most group life insurance policies are limited in amount, which may be tied to salary or some other benchmark. These numbers are often capped, and this cap may be dangerously low when compared to your family s actual needs. In fact, a detailed needs analysis that evaluates your specific situation, will likely show that any employer-provided coverage falls short. In addition, the amount of group insurance offered is almost always reduced, sometimes dramatically, when you retire. You could one day find yourself without coverage, and if your health has changed (which it will as you age), you might also find yourself unable to secure individual protection. At the very least, it will definitely be more expensive. While group life insurance can help, it does not replace the need for individually owned life insurance. I ll be happy to meet with you and provide a no-cost needs analysis, so you ll know exactly where you stand. John A.
