This newsletter is a combined July and August newsletter, and contains all the information you ll need about GA events for the rest of the summer! Be sure to hang onto your copy so you don t miss anything! Glad you Asked For the month of August, Pastor John and Pastor Amanda will be preaching a sermon series called Glad You Asked. It will be time addressing questions of faith that you have been wondering about, but haven t had a chance to ask. You are invited to submit questions to Pastor John or Pastor Amanda. Have a question about the Bible, God, the life of faith or the church or any other aspect of faith? When you do submit a question, please be sure to include your name and contact information so we can contact you if needed. Please understand we will not be able to address all submitted questions. All questions need to be submitted by Sunday, July 17. Congregational Meeting to Call Pastor Amanda Simons Three years ago, when Pastor Amanda began her ministry at Gustavus Adolphus, she was called with a co-terminous call. What this means is her call is tied to the senior pastor at the time she was called to Gustavus. When the senior pastor resigns and a new senior pastor begins one of two things need to happen within six months of the new senior pastor beginning. Either Pastor Amanda needs to resign from her position and move onto a new call, or the congregation of Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church needs to vote to call her so she can continue to serve as associate pastor at Gustavus Adolphus. After conversations between Pastors John and Amanda, the Personnel Committee and Church Council, the obvious decision is to offer a new call to Pastor Amanda and invite the congregational members to vote on this new call. We ask you to join us on Sunday, July 24 to celebrate and give thanks to God for the ministry Amanda has done. We will also, with excitement, pray for God s guidance as we move forward in faith and to live out all that God will do through our church with Pastor Amanda and her leadership leading us. Please watch for a more information regarding this congregational meeting as the date gets closer.

2 Page 2 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Chur ch From the Senior Pastor What does a hospitable church look like? Jesus commanded, Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, Peace to this house! 6 7Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide. (from Luke ) The story of Jesus sending the 70 out into the communities where he intended to visit later is a compelling one for many reasons. As indicated above, Jesus provided some specific instructions to those who were sent and one of the things that Jesus expected for those who were to be visitors, was to be received with hospitality. To be welcomed upon their arrival and to be provided things they needed, while they were creating community among new friends. On Sunday, July 3 rd, we will be reflecting further on Luke 10 in worship, please join us! One thing you may consider is using your FRIST FIVE minutes to connect with someone you don t know. What I mean by this is using the first five minutes after worship to introduce yourself to someone you don t know, and welcome them to GA. The conversation can be very light, but when we all participate in the first five, we help to move our church in a direction that is working on building a stronger community as well as welcoming those who are visiting. Your friends will be there after the first five and you will have time to connect with them then. Can you imagine with me what the sanctuary and narthex would look like if we all did our part of being hospitable and welcoming? It is my opinion that Jesus has expectations for those who are being sent to GA similar to the disciples that Jesus sent. The expectation is that we are inviting to all that may come through the doors of this church, and that we all do our part in building a strong community with both the visitor and those that have been here for a long time! Will you join me in using your FIRST FIVE as we strive to be a hospitable church? Just as Jesus anticipated, those sent returned with their reports, and Luke s gospel says they returned with JOY! (Luke 10.17) I would hope those who visit Gustavus Adolphus would return to their homes with JOY. Filled with JOY because of the worship they were welcomed into, the power of God s word that they experienced and the sense of the Holy Spirit among those that gather at GA to worship our living God! What role do you have in making GA a welcoming place for those who are visiting or even those that have been here for 40 years that you may not know? If Gustavus Adolphus is going to be a place that is welcoming, friendly and concerned about building a stronger community, and live out being a Gateway of FAITH with our city, neighborhood and each other, all of us have to be willing to participate in being hospitable! Pastor John Hierlinger WEEKLY BIBLE STUDY Thursdays, 10:00 am Learn more about the Bible readings for the coming Sunday Newsletter Submission Deadlines GA Newsletter submission deadline is the 1st Monday of the month for the upcoming month newsletter: 1st Monday in August for September s newsletter If you are responsible for a monthly article, please put these dates in your personal calendar. 3 J uly/august 2016 Page 3 Thoughts from Pastor Amanda Therefore, since it is by God s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. - 2 Cor. 4:1 So we do not lose heart. These are the words that Bishop Lull invited the members of the Synod Council and the voting delegates for the Churchwide Assembly to hear, reflect upon, and memorize at our most recent meeting. For the Synod Council, for which I now serve as Secretary, these words will be a part of our meeting devotions for the next year as we gather in prayer, discernment, conversation and strategy around the present and future of the ELCA and the St. Paul Area Synod. The conversations that we have been having within our own congregation around mission, God s call for now and the future for GA, of the changes in society and the church, of a desire for the church as a whole and for our congregation in particular to be relevant and active in and for the world, are all conversations occurring at the synod-wide and church-wide too. Each member was asked to contribute two ideas and dreams for the future of our church. With a whole room of lay leaders and clergy, lots of ideas and dreams were shared, many overlapping. I share with you two of my dreams for the ELCA: One, that we focus on branding and identity. Many people do not know who the ELCA is or what it means to be an ELCA Lutheran (hint: huge emphasis on God s grace). Many people, including even your pastors sometimes, do not know all of the good actions that our church is taking within our communities, for growth of the ministries of the church, for faith formation and worship that connects with people at a spiritual level. Individual congregations lack communication departments to highlight all of the amazing ministries and mission that they have and share. I think that we need to change this so that our internal and external communications, so that the news and social media, so that our neighbors know who we are as the ELCA and who we are as Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church. My second idea aligns closely to the first one and is very simple. I yearn for people to know me as a Christian in a positive light. I yearn for people beyond the walls of our sanctuary and my meetings with other ELCA members to know that when I say that I am a Christian that I am associated with the values and ethics of Christianity that I uphold and embody as best as I can. The values of love, of grace, of inclusivity, of repentance and forgiveness, of hospitality and welcome, of freedom from sin and freedom to be neighbor, of hopefulness and joyfulness, of compassion, of advocacy and community outreach. One of the sadnesses of my generational age and the public sphere is that many of my friends and peers and the people whom I met in the grocery store when I m wearing the collar have an assumption that Christian is equated with hostility, inhospitality, hypocrite, exclusivity, selfcenteredness and focus on individual salvation, and lack true love and compassion for the neighbor. In my opinion and the opinion of my peers, the fundamentalist Christian denominations dominate the message of what it means to be a Christian in our day and age. I yearn for the ELCA and its brother and sister congregations of the mainline Protestant denominations to be known again as the prototype of Christian in our church, society and culture. As the hymn sings, they will know us by our love. #Reformation As we prepare to celebrate and honor the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation during the Renaissance age, let us remember that the church is always being reformed (ecclesia semper reformanda, in the words of Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon). What are your yearnings for God s universal church, for the ELCA, and for GA as we prepare for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation? Where is God calling us to remember that the church is always in need of reformation? My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, as we go about the work of God in our daily living and vocational callings, hear again the words of the apostle Paul through his letter to the Corinthians: Therefore, since it is by God s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. So do not lose heart. God s church is in good hands - God s hands - and God calls each and every one of us to be engaged in God s ministry in a variety of ways, with the primary mission to be love of our neighbor. Do not lose heart, our God is not only a God of resurrection, but a God of reformation also. Pastor Amanda Simons

Sunday, September 25 Sunday School Classes begin for Preschool through Grade 5 at the Tree House SPARK!! Is coming back to the Tree House this fall! Designed to get kids ages 2-grade 5 opening the Bible and exploring God s Word in each and every lesson. Children will study Bible stories through many different types of learning such as Art, Drama, Storytelling, Games and more. Students will hear and experience the same Bible story in all of the workshops for three weeks rotating to a different workshop each week. Educators have long realized that it is necessary to repeat information in order to retain it. When children hear the same story through several different lessons, they remember it better. They are also able to go deeper into the story and have a better chance of personally reflecting on the importance of the lessons. For more information about Sunday School and Confirmation programs, contact Sherrie Nordquist by calling the Church office (direct line) or sherrie@gachurch.org

6 Page 6 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Chur ch Global Mission: Student Scholarships Recently I attended a meeting of the Bega Kwa Bega Cluster to meet with representatives of other churches in this redefined Synod group. While not well attended on a Saturday morning, there was much to discuss as we hear about our work in the Iringa Diocese of Tanzania. You ve read before in this column about change a word that is ever present and evolving. With relatively new leadership at the Synod level, new additions to the Task Force, new systems that help the many affiliate groups work more closely together and how to best keep all communications open and flexible. Secondary educational scholarships have been at the core of our partnership with Kiponzelo and Igangidungu u. Two years ago they switched to a block grant funding model, but in reality it is still about $400 per scholarship. The parish pastor and team allocate the amount that goes to students based upon need; some receive full scholarship and some partial when families are able to assist. This year we are asked to make our commitment by September 1 st and have the money into the Synod by November 1 st. This change is because their school year starts January 1 st and additional time is needed to match available funds with student applications. I am thanking you on behalf of the students for the scholarship dollars you have provided over many years and ask that you continue to support these students this coming year by letting me know of your willingness to commitment and to have your money into the office by November 1. While we are looking at calendar dates, how about adding a few others to your calendar? This is an early alert for the annual Bites for event with a Tanzanian project the focus, scheduled for September 18 th. Always a great response of wonderful food samplings, so start your planning early! Our church library has a copy of the book You Have the Watches We Have the Time by Ross Benbow. This is a well-documented book of interviews with Minnesotans and Tanzanians as the Bega Kwa Bega partnership was formed and the impact it has had on both the St. Paul Area Synod and Iringa Diocese. Ross will be the speaker at the St. Paul Partner (Tanzanian water projects) fundraiser dinner on October 29 at GA church. And one last date that is always an energetic time November 12 for the Fall Mission Festival. I do not know the location yet, but I will make you aware closer to the date. By the time you read this, the Bishop of the Iringa Diocese will have spent time in Minnesota visiting with many that have been involved in this strong global mission partnership, and thanking them for their dedication. He is scheduled to retire in October, so this is a farewell visit also. Thank you for your interest and commitment to our friends in Tanzania. We can serve in many ways as we work together and support GA s commitment to missions. Blessings, Jean Schwartz Global Missions Chair MONTHLY MISSION EMPHASIS The Church Council has re-set our Mission Emphases to support ministries beyond our church. 7 J uly/august 2016 Community Caring GA Craft Sale, Bake Sale, and Kaffestuga In the January 2016 GA newsletter, Karen Landkamer wrote a wonderful article thanking all the individuals who volunteered to help her make the 2015 Craft Show another huge success. I feel it appropriate to expand on Karen s article and also add some history of the Craft Show. Most importantly, I want to extend on behalf of every member of Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church a very big thank you to Carol Ann Sideen and Karen Landkamer. To Carol Ann for her 22 years of dedication and leadership of the Craft Show and to Karen for stepping forward to lead the 2015 Craft Show. When Carol Ann and her late husband, Wes, first envisioned GA hosting a craft show, it was to be as an evangelistic tool for our church. This continues to be the goal today as well. It was immediately expanded to include a bake sale and Kaffestuga. It is hard to estimate how many hundreds and perhaps thousands of people have entered our beautiful facilities because of attending our craft show. Most of our members perhaps only associate the craft show with fundraising. It is true that our church does benefit from the show s proceeds. There are numerous examples of improvements around our church as a result of the Craft Show profits. The most obvious example is the replacement of the large, heavy, rectangular tables in Luther Hall with the very lightweight, round tables. It is important to note that in a congregation such as GA, you can find people to serve on the Craft Show Committee or to volunteer for Friday set-up, or volunteer to help as a monitor during the show on Saturday, or volunteer for clean-up duty late Saturday after the sale. All the people just mentioned serve very important functions, but none of this would happen without the leadership and direction of our Chairperson. The Chairperson serves with what I call ALL-IN ATTITUDE. This type of dedication is what Carol Ann showed all these 22 Page 7 years and what Karen exhibited when she stepped forward with GUSTO to allow our Craft Show to continue without interruption. Over the last several years, Carol Ann had been under much stress wondering if someone in our congregation would be found to take over as Chairperson, so the Craft Show could continue. Over the years, some people have suggested that it would be easier if we held the sale every two years or perhaps every third year. The Craft Show Committee has continued to reject these ideas. There are several reasons why the show must be held annually, but the main reason is that these crafters have their handiwork to sell every year. If one year, our show wasn t available on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, crafters would find a different show on that day in our region. These crafters would probably not return to our show again. By the evaluations of the crafters themselves, we have one of the best, if not the best, show in the entire area. We have consistently had a waiting list to get into our show. Thus I would like to suggest that if anyone reading this article has an interest in working on our GA Craft Show, please contact Karen Landkamer directly or leave your name in the church office. It is always nice to get more people involved to continue the long-standing tradition of hosting our GA Craft Show. Once again a HUGE THANK YOU to Carol Ann SIdeen and Karen Landkamer. Thank you, Bob Barduson
