The Archbishop regularly visit parishes and celebrates one of the Sunday Masses. Parish Council: The Parish Council will meet this Wednesday, January 13, at 7:00 PM in the Lower Church Hall. The meeting is open to all registered parishioners of St. Mary's Parish. A Schedule Change: Except for those Fridays when there is a 9:00 AM School Mass, daily Mass will be celebrated Monday through Thursday at 8:00 AM. There will be no Friday or Saturday morning Mass. A Generous Bequest: I am pleased to announce that the late Deacon Joseph Gabriele has left a bequest of five thousand dollars in his will to St. Mary s Church. On behalf of the entire parish, I express my gratitude to him and his wife Marilyn, both of whom died last year. Mr. & Mrs. Gabriele were faithful and devoted members of St. Mary s Church for many years. We will place their bequest in our reserved fund with the McGowan Estate and use it to help fund the St. Mary s Parish Connection Project. Fr. 3 The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Today we commemorate the baptism of the Lord: that moment when Jesus entered the waters of the Jordan to be baptized by John the Baptist. This feast in which we celebrate the manifestation of Christ to the world also marks the end of the Christmas season. The Feast of the Lord s Baptism, however, raises a puzzling question: If Jesus is the sinless Son of God, why did he submit to John s baptism for the repentance of sins? What need was there for Jesus to be baptized if he did not commit sin? The writers of the New Testament were aware of this problem. For example, when Jesus presents himself for baptism, John the Baptist objects: I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me? In response to John s objection, Jesus replies, Allow it for now, for thus is it fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness (Matt 3:14-15). By the word righteousness Jesus means God s plan for salvation. And so Jesus tells John: It is God s plan for the salvation of the world that you baptize me; therefore, let it be. By submitting to John s baptism, Jesus affirms John s ministry whereby John calls Israel to repentance. By humbling himself to be baptized, the sinless Son of God provides his contemporaries with an example to follow. He says, Be baptized by John and repent because the kingdom of God is at hand. Jesus baptism marked the beginning of his ministry. For it was at that moment that the powerful Spirit of God descended upon him, empowering him to proclaim that the kingdom of God was making its appearance in his ministry. Our baptism is similar to and different from Jesus baptism. On the one hand, our baptism is similar to Jesus baptism inasmuch as it is part of God s redemptive plan for our salvation. By being baptized, we enter into God s plan of salvation. We join a multitude of Christians who have been baptized into God s redemptive plan. On the other hand, our baptism is different from Jesus baptism inasmuch as we are baptized into the name of Jesus Christ. By our baptism, we enter into the mystery of Christ s death and resurrection. With Christ we die to the power of sin over our lives, and we enter into a new life made possible by Christ s resurrection. St. Paul reminds us of this when he writes, Are you not aware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? (Rom 6:3). Baptism, then, is more than a washing away of sins, it is a participation in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. When we enter the waters of baptism, we are buried with Christ. And when we rise from the waters of baptism, we rise with Christ into new and eternal life. The result is that we are a new creation in Christ; we are sons and daughters of our heavenly Father. But if this is the new situation in which we find ourselves, we ought to live accordingly. This is why Saint Paul writes, If then you were raised with Christ, see what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth (Col 3:1-2). The Baptism of Jesus marked a new phase in his life: the beginning of his preaching about the kingdom of God. Our own baptism marks a new phase in our lives as well: a life lived in accordance with our new dignity as sons and daughters of God, brothers and sisters of our elder brother, Jesus Christ. We seek to grow in that love, to be guided by the Holy Spirit and to share an atmosphere of warmth and hospitality with all.

4 January 10, 2016 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION ADULT ENRICHMENT Grade level Mass: Grades 1-3 will be featured at the 9:30 Mass next Sunday, January 17 th. 2 nd Grade St. Mary s School and Religious Education Parents: Fr. Matera will discuss the Sacrament of the Eucharist. This talk will be held on Tuesday, January 26 th at 7:00 PM in the lower Church. We ask that at least one parent of each child attend this session. Youth Mass: Our next Sunday night Mass will take place on January 31 at 5:00 PM. Please mark February 21, March 6, April 24, and May 15 on your calendars. Middle and high school students are encouraged to attend with family and friends! Small groups meet afterwards from 6:00-7:30 PM at St. Mary s School. High School Confirmation Prep: Confirmation, check out our page on the parish website under the Faith Formation tab. Documents such as our Confirmation packet, service log, volunteer form, and program calendar are now ready to be downloaded. Our next small group session will take place on January 17. Middle School Religious Ed: Our next small group session will take place this Sunday, January 10. YOUTH MINISTRY Jubilee Year of Mercy: A total of 100 sandwiches were donated to the Cathedral of Saint Joseph sandwich ministry to be distributed on the streets of Hartford. Archbishop Blair even retweeted our post about it on Twitter. What a way to start the Year of Mercy! Our next meeting will take place on January 10 from 7:45-9:00 PM in the Parish Center Youth Worship Band: Do you play keyboard? Join our band! Come learn contemporary Christian music to lead worship at Sunday night youth Masses and Adoration during IGNITE Youth Ministry meetings. Lenten Series: Father Matera will give a four week series on the Book of Exodus, entitled The God Who Frees and Redeems Us: Reading the Book of Exodus Today, on the following Thursdays of Lent: February 18, 25, and March 3, 10. Sunday Morning Adult Enrichment Program: Happy New Year! Please join us before or after the 9:30 AM. Mass for coffee and a few moments to catch up with friends. Next Week, we begin the first half of 2016 by focusing on the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Deacon Art will discuss the Corporal Works of Mercy. Tuesday Evening Bible Study: It's not too late to get 2016 off to great start by attending Bible Study with Deacon Art Miller on January 19th and the following Tuesday evenings: February 9 & 23; March 8 & 22; April 12 & 19; May 3, 17, & 31; June 14 & 28. All classes are scheduled for the Parish Center beginning at 7:00 PM. Prior to Bible Study join us at 6:10 PM for Lectio Divina in the portable classrooms and/or 6:45 PM in the Parish Center for prayers for healing and special intentions.
