3 NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ST. MARY S A PLACE TO BELONG, BELIEVE, BECOME Finishing the Journey There are moments in life when we feel that we no longer have the energy to go forward. Our work puts us under more stress than we can endure. Problems at home become overwhelming. It is precisely at such moments that we say, I can t go on, I can t do it anymore. Elijah, one of the greatest and most powerful prophets of the OT, had such an experience. Living at a time when most of his compatriots had abandoned their faith in the God of Israel and now fleeing from Queen Jezebel who had sworn to take his life the prophet found himself in the desert: alone, weary, hungry, convinced that he could not go on. It was precisely at that moment when Elijah felt most alone and vulnerable, however, that the Angel of God came to him. Providing Elijah with food from heaven, the angel commanded the prophet, Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you! Strengthened by that food, Elijah walked forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God where the Lord appeared to him. The Christian life is a journey and, as in all journeys, there are moments when the journey is longer and more difficult than we anticipated. We encounter obstacles that we had not foreseen. We confront unexpected problems. Most importantly, we must deal with the temptation to return to an easier and more comfortable way of life. But in the Christian life, we make this journey together. In the Christian life, we make this journey with fellow believers. In the Christian life, we make this journey in and with the church. We make this journey as a community of believers who are strengthened by the living bread that comes down from heaven: the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Week after week, we gather around the altar in order to be strengthened for the journey that lies ahead. Week after week, we gather around the altar to be nourished by God s Word so that we will not be discouraged by the journey we must make. Week after week, we gather around the altar to share in the Eucharist so that we can complete the journey we have begun. O, yes, there are moments in life when we feel we no longer have the energy to go forward. There are moments in life when the journey seems too arduous, too difficult to complete. But we do not make this journey alone. Nor do we make it without the help that comes from God. As we celebrate this Eucharist in which we eat the bread that comes down from heaven, we ask for the grace to be strengthened for the journey that lies ahead. We ask for the grace to support each other in this journey that is our Christian life. Father Matera
