3 Easter 2016 Faith and Doubt Today s Gospel is about doubting Thomas, and it affords us an opportunity to reflect about faith and doubt. What does it mean to believe? What does it mean to doubt? Faith and doubt are a part of our everyday life. For example, we believe and trust in our friends or our spouse. We believe and trust in the promises that others make to us. Or, we doubt that they will do what they promise. Faith requires us to do something we find difficult to do. It requires us to trust in someone. Faith requires me to trust that another loves me and will be faithful to me. Faith requires me to accept the word or promise of another. Faith is a kind of leap into the dark. But once we have made the leap of faith we are free because we have committed ourselves to someone. Doubt, on the other hand, comes rather easily to us. It is easy to doubt because we can always think of so many reasons why we should not believe and commit ourselves to someone else. And so, instead of committing ourselves to someone in faith, we raise all kinds of doubts about those who invite us to believe in them. For, example, we say that the person cannot be trusted. We say that the person will not fulfill the promises he or she has made. The end result is that we are paralyzed because we do not commit ourselves to anyone or anything. The difference between doubt and faith can be stated in this way: Faith leads to freedom; doubt paralyzes us. For once I believe in another, I commit myself to that person. But when I doubt, I am paralyzed because I refuse to make a commitment to someone. Let s look at doubting Thomas once more. There were many reasons for Thomas to doubt. He could say to himself that he had not seen Jesus, that the dead do not rise, that the other apostles were deceived. After all, if Jesus had risen from the dead, why didn t he appear to him? Thomas could spend his whole life raising doubts about what the other apostles told him. Doubting paralyzed Thomas. Refusing to believe that God had raised Jesus from the dead, he could not commit himself to anyone or anything. Doubt is not wrong. It can even be healthy. And there are times when we must doubt so that we can test the evidence. But if our life is merely a life of doubt, then we are paralyzed. We will never be able to entrust ourselves to each other or to the Lord if our life is filled with doubt. Faith is a risk, a willingness to take a chance. It requires a profound trust in the one who seeks our faith. It requires us to trust that the other is trustworthy and worthy of our faith. On this Sunday, when we hear the Gospel of doubting Thomas, the Lord reminds us that those who believe in his resurrection, even though they have not seen him, are more blessed than those who have seen and believe. Faith requires trust and confidence in God: confidence that God will not deceive us, and trust in the utter reliability of God. Such faith frees us to give ourselves entirely to the Lord. Such faith enables us to be what God created us to be. Father Matera
