2 OUR MISSION South Carolina United Methodist Camps and Retreat Ministries joins with the church to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by seeking, welcoming, and gathering persons into the community of the body of Christ through outdoor camping experiences at a place set apart with nurturing people in the Christian living by providing HOPE! Our mission with Asbury Hills Camp & Retreat Center, Sewee Coastal Retreat Center and Camp Providence is to serve all people for Christian birth, growth, and renewal. Hospitality Opportunity Purpose Engagement By showing hospitality, we reach out to all people eager to serve. We offer opportunity by showing Christ in all of our efforts to serve and provide. By nurturing all people in Christian living, we give them purpose and quality of life. We make ourselves present during our guest s stay. We engage with our visitors by showing our love for Christ preparing to send them out to live out their faith. TOUCHING LIVES A camper was sitting at worship at the Mountain Chapel one evening & while everyone was turning in their Bibles to follow along with the camp pastor, a counselor noticed this camper didn t have a Bible. The counselor looked over, saw the look in this campers eyes and gave the camper his Bible to keep for himself. That week of camp passed, along with others. A few weeks later, a package came in the mail for that counselor. That young camper told his parents what his counselor had done so they took him to purchase a new Bible for his counselor. Not only did they purchase a new Bible for that counselor but the little camper decided that each summer, he wanted to give a Bible to someone who doesn t have their own. Nestled between Table Rock & Caesar s Head, Asbury Hills completed and celebrates 55 years of camping! In 2016 we served more than 4,000 guests and campers in this beautiful setting where creation formation leads to faith formation, building relationships with trust & confidence. The ministry s emphasis is to be more intentional about creating and practicing Christian Community. We continue to practice play and build relationships in a way that generates leadership development. This past year, our very own Executive Director was asked to lead the national camping initiative on Expanding Ethnic Community and Leadership in Camping. As the ministry continues YEAR IN REVIEW to grow strong from the inside out, the past year was filled with many experiences for which we are thankful. In April of 2016 Asbury Hills was named the Coolest Camp in South Carolina by Go Banking Rate. In June of 2016, The Center for Faith & Service listed Asbury Hills as a Summer Camp that is Changing the World. Also in June, Camps and Retreats added staff member Paige Railey, replacing Sarah Kelley as the new Director of Marketing & Communications. Towards the end of the year, Camps and Retreat Ministries secured a $40K grant through the Conservation Bank to protect newly purchased Burgess property at Sky Ranche, & a new Master Plan for Asbury Hills was completed by DP3 Architects in Greenville. As many continue to pray for God s discernment over the Sewee property, the contract for the sale of Sewee passed at Annual Conference last year fell through. The board is working diligently towards a new sale or best use of the property. Camps and Retreat Ministries is pleased to place Camp Providence under its wing. Many hours with community leaders have taken place, along with future programming ideas for the property. Camps and Retreat Ministries would like to thank the entire Conference for their continued support of the ministry as we look forward to all God has in Store for 2017.

Guests have been able to gather in God s creation, escape from the hustle & bustle of their everyday life, and grow in their relationship with Christ. Our guests have ranged from Sunday school classes, to school groups, to confirmation classes, to knitting clubs and to church leadership groups. We have developed a team of retreat hosts that specialize in removing distractions & barriers so our guests can focus on their goals. Another integral part of our ministry is our food service staff. Our food service staff has begun to expand and diversify our menus. Meals continue to be one of the staples at Asbury Hills. Our food service staff is also in the process of developing a banquet menu for groups. Survey feedback from our group has shown that over 90% of guests feeling they have grown in their relationship with God and feel renewed and refreshed as they traveled home. As we continue to grow and serve more people, we have begun to feel growing pains associated with our indoor meeting spaces. We are beginning to look into ways to expand our meeting spaces so that groups will have even more comfortable spaces to gather, fellowship, and worship. 4 SUMMER 2016 Campers and staff spent the summer unpacking the meaning of following Christ, abiding in & serving Christ and ultimately what it means to fully trust Him. In reference to 1 John 2:6, campers really explored what it meant to be on a trek with Christ and truly abide in Him. Working at Asbury Hills is a huge blessing because of the amount of spiritual growth you experience & the people you encounter. --Ashley O. Working as a counselor has made me realize the importance of love in the life of a Christian. Everything we do here is motivated by a love for the kids because we want them to see Jesus in us. --Dillon D. Working at Asbury was an unbelievable experience. The fact that I was a camper, a CIT & now summer staff made it all worth it. You get to see every angle & how God moves. -Trevor B. We experienced growth in our summer camp season, in our retreat season, & in our staff. Summer 2016 was our biggest summer to date with 1,128 campers served, as well as wrapping up our biggest year with retreats. We also welcomed a new Facilities Director, Kevin Owen, to the team. Chris Hulme moved into a new role as the Retreats & Recreation Director. It is exciting to think about all that is yet to come as we carry on our mission of serving all people for Christian birth, growth, & renewal! --David Rouse

Players gathered from around the state the day before Annual Conference to play golf and raise funds towards camper scholarships. With the possibility of winning a 2016 GMC Terrain, 15 Passenger Bus or a full Golf Club set, players went to the green to benefit Asbury Hills. A huge thank you is extended to all sponsors and participants. The golf tournament raised $7, in funds to go towards camper scholarships at Asbury Hills!
