ALL SAINTS KESGRAVE NEWSLETTER ISSUE NO THOUGHT FOR THE DAY At the beginning of January, a well-known designer in the crocheting world released a Crochet Along project! Loved for her ability to put colours and stitch patterns together, hundreds of us, me included, armed with 15 Sweet Pea colours, set out on this new adventure which was designed to remind us of the heady days of Summer and banish any Winter blues! Every Friday, the next part of the pattern is released, and lots of us (according to the photos on Instagram!) settle down with a cup of coffee and their crochet hook, and crochet away for England. I would imagine bedtime in these households may be late on numerous occasions, as it s rather relaxing and therapeutic once you get going! As the days pass and my blanket steadily grows, it has got me thinking how like life this blanket actually is. I had a couple of failed attempts at the start (212 foundation chains is an awful lot to count!) which caused me much frustration. Having sorted that problem out I sped ahead, congratulating myself on learning the stitch repeat so quickly, and the colours are truly wonderful Violet, Pomegranate,
Pistachio, Blush.all together they are such a pretty sight. It made me thankful for all the beautiful things in this world. My blanket was going so well, but then I suddenly realised that early on I had made a couple of very slight mistakes. They were virtually impossible to see really, but I knew they were there. A difficult decision needed to be made did I pull it undone and re-do it and get behind? Or leave it as it was and just live with it, knowing that each stitch had been created with love and I would be more careful in the future? Sometimes life is going along well and steadily, and then suddenly out of the blue there s something that knocks us off course or rocks us. What do we do when we don t understand the pattern? When there s a big messy knot in the wool that we just can t seem to untangle? Sometimes it feels as if there are too many mistakes in our lives, and too many loose ends to weave in and finish things off neatly. We wish we could see the bigger picture what will the blanket look like when it s finished as opposed to only a couple of completed rows? At times life can seem wonderful and colourful and just right. At other times we can feel lost and as if everything is unravelling before our very eyes. During all these times I believe it s important to remember who has written the pattern for our lives. Our Father in Heaven. God knows every twist, turn, stitch, colour and row that makes up your life and mine, and He already knows what the finished article will look like. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11) Whilst God doesn t promise us that life will be easy,
he does promise to be with us every step of the way; we are precious in his sight, and he loves us, knows us and cares for us so much so that the bible tells us Why, even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not be afraid (Luke 12:7) We as humans are a work in progress, just like my blanket, and God knows this and loves us just the same. God is in charge, shaping us and weaving everything together. One day we will see the overall effect until then, let us all try to place every stitch of our lives into His hands. 6 SILVER SCREEN Come along and join us for our next Silver Screen on 18 th February from 2.00pm 4.00pm showing Delivery Man. An affable underachiever finds out he's fathered 533 children through anonymous donations to a fertility clinic 20 years ago. Now he must decide whether or not to come forward when 142 of them file a lawsuit to reveal his identity. If you are able to RSVP it would be very helpful. Contact Charlotte on cha.markham@btinternet.com THE ASK JOURNAL In September of last year, we welcomed Ollie Scase to the position of Youth worker at All Saints. During the past few months he has been busy at college and within church and the local community, developing his new role, and so for this issue I decided to catch up with Ollie and ask him to tell us a bit more about himself and what he s been up to! Beyond youth work (!) my passions include camping, walking, photography and Software Development. I used to be a full-time software developer before I worked at All Saints. I also love pets and have two family cats Max and Pippin. Something you probably don t know about me I got first place in a (wheel) gymnastics competition in the Netherlands, out of 2 people in my category! Within church you ll find me helping set up for services, leading FIG/Breakfast Special services every now and then, or just sitting in the congregation as part of the church family. I hope to expand what I do within the church as I get more settled and am always looking at new ways in which the
church can aid, and be as accommodating as possible, for young people. In terms of youth groups, I run a weekly high school lunchtime club on Tuesdays. It is very relaxed, and we socialise, play games and have a short talk on a chosen theme. Oh, and there s doughnuts!! Also at the high school is Black Dog. Every Wednesday lunchtime we walk around the school grounds with one of two dogs well known to us, which enables us to establish a presence within the school and build up a good rapport with students. Stroking a dog can have very calming benefits for many, and our hope is that students can benefit from this too. It has been well received by students and teachers, and it is great to see how it puts a smile on people s faces when they see us with the dog. Then finally, there s House Group which is a fortnightly meeting. We alternate between two homes and enjoy a meal with each other before having a bible-study discussion based on a topic for the evening. It runs from 7-9pm; an hour for the meal and an hour for the discussion. This Summer we are organising a trip to the Newday Generation festival a 6-night camp that features live worship music, seminars, games, activities, cafes, competitions and more! This is available for all young people who are of high school age. In terms of my training, I attend Ridley Hall in Cambridge. It s structured to have week blocks two times a term. In September we looked at Theological Reflections; October, Pastoral Care, and at the beginning of January, Christian Doctrine. After each week block, I have an assignment to complete based on the topic and am currently really enjoying
researching the incarnation doctrine and models of atonement.
