Possible Summer Reading Group at St. Augusne s We have heard from our Scriptures read recently at Mass that we are called always to love one another and that each of us is a child of God. These are powerful phrases. God wants to be so close to us! And yet, we do not always demonstrate with our feelings, thoughts and acons that we are all sisters and brothers in Christ. Some in our community connue to be looked upon and treated with disrespect. For the past two summers, people from our parish have come together to discuss two books that get at our American challenge of race. How oen do we as individuals think about race? It seems clear from many people of color that they think about race many mes each day and that as much as we may think race relaons are improving, there seems to be a lot of recent happenings that do not bear that to be the case. This summer, we are considering reading a third book, this one wrien by an AfricanAmerican minister, Rev. Michael Eric Dyson, addressed to people of European dissent. The book is tled, Tears We Cannot Stop, A Sermon to White America and it was published in This book will likely be a challenge, but its words are presented based on love and trying to implement God s command to love one another. Would you like to read this book this Summer and, while doing so, get together for perhaps four weekly early evening sessions in the Gathering Room to share our thoughts? We miss you when you are not here with us please come home. Lakeside Thoughts Kind words maer. Last evening, I witnessed this firsthand when my daughter and I were sing by the lake eang ice cream, taking in the last few moments of a sunny Sunday evening before sunset. A family was sing at a picnic table nearby, and I could hear a young child crying. As the child clearly expressed some sort of discontent, one of the adults, possibly a grandparent, kept making sarcasc remarks to the child, which only appeared to make the child more upset. This went on for what seemed like a long me unl another adult from the family approached the table (maybe the granddad?) and spoke kindly to the child. This man asked the child if the next me they went to McDonalds, would he want a Happy Meal or a Sad Meal? The child stopped crying and proceeded to get into a conversa- on with this person about wanng to be happy and it seemed to all end rather peacefully. Not knowing the situa- on that preceded the crying, I cannot sit in judgment, but it was evident that this kinder, quieter approach yielded beer results than a piling on of sarcasm. It s good old summerme, and while we have waited a long me in Central New York for the temperatures to rise and for me outdoors, let s remember to keep our cool both by drinking plenty of water but also by keeping our tempers in check. We can choose to be a people of peace if we stop and think before we speak. When using electronics, we also can follow that same rule of thumb before replying to an or text. Before posng anything on social media, we can ask ourselves the following important quesons: TIs it TRUE? HIs it HELPFUL? IIs it INSPIRING? NIs it NECESSARY? KIs it KIND? Maybe the older I get, I am just turning into a big soy, but I literally cringe when I hear people speaking unkindly to one another or about one another. While I am the first to admit I enjoy watching enrely too much television, I also will not hesitate to change the channel if I start to hear a barrage of insults, lately being on the news and coming from twier accounts. What kind of message are we sending to our kids? We have the enre summer ahead of us to refresh, to restore, to unwind, to grow. Let s dust off those books we ve been planning to read, or pick up a deck of cards and teach our lile ones how to play Crazy 8 s. I d like to finally figure out how to truly skip rocks at the lake! Let s be kinder and gentler to ourselves so that we can be kinder and gentler to each other. And when we find ourselves becoming sullen and surly, let s take a me out or ask for some help. Most of the seasonal workers are here and have been very appreciave of our gis of blankets, clothes, sneakers, and the like, especially because of the current changeable weather. Keep them in your prayers! Breakfast at the Shelter There but for the Grace of God go I. How many mes have I thought exactly this all week! Signing up to go to the Men s Shelter at6:00 a.m.was a joke to many especially to my family but this service was something I wanted to be a part of! Walking into the shelter was like walking into a private bedroom filled with men in various forms of sleep. As they woke there was a delicious breakfast waing for them and we were there to serve them who represented to me the least of our brethren! As these men came through their breakfast buffet each of them were thankful and offered us blessings! Many of these men were filled with the love of God. I had to stop and remember all of the mes I came so close to doubng that same love and I have been so very blessed! Who am I to ever doubt this great love of God? As I connue to reflect on this experience I search for ways to be able to serve my less fortunate brothers and allow our Lord to use me to always share His Word to those I meet! If you called someone by name, at least in ancient days of the bible, it was thought that you had some power over them. This is why the Jews at certain periods of the Hebrew scriptures (the Old Testament ) would not speak the name of the Holy One, the being we today so casually refer to as God, or, in texng and elsewhere, as OMG. Speaking his name did (and does) seem to make the speaker more powerful than the one who is above all. God has a special name for each of us, one he calls us by in the depths of our heart. Today sgospelnarrates a wrangle about the naming of John the Bapst, and out of courtesy, I need to go back a few pages in Luke s story to remind you why. You see, names were important to God also. The Archangel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah and told him the name of his son would be John. Why John? I suppose it was because this name had a Hebrew root that meant, approximately, Yahweh has shown favor, an indicaon of John s role in salvaon history. The angel Gabriel appeared also to Mary, frightening her with an announcement of her holiness and the blessedness of her womb, since she would bear the holiest child of all. The name of that child would be what we know today as Jesus though in the Hebrew and Aramaic, the full name was Yehoshua, or Joshua. It meant, Yhwh is salvaon. Oen the Hebrews named the male child on the eighth day, at the me of his circumcision. Neighbors and relaves apparently came along for this, and they were all of the opinion that Zechariah s child should be named Zechariah, aer his father. Ah, but his mother Elizabeth said no! He will be called John, she said. Apparently her husband had found a way to tell her the story of the Archangel and the preordained name. He did have a tablet to write on. (Noce that in the Gospel they had to make signs to talk to him, so he had also been struck deaf as well as mute.) Zechariah writes, in answer to the signs, that John is his name. Immediately Zechariah is able to speak again and can hear again, since he was hearing and speaking (and believing) the word of God. A fascinang story, but what does this mean to us today? I want to suggest that God has a special name for each of us, one he calls us by in the depths of our heart. It is a name thatif we can hear it and speak it with our liveswill make us who we are supposed to be, will make us the carriers of God s name itself to others. Gabriel s appearance to the old man Zechariah was nearly idencal to his one to Mary. As you know, the reacons of Mary and Zechariah were also quite similar, except for one important difference. Zechariah knew that he and his wife were both far beyond childbearing age, and so he actually doubted the word of the Archangel and asked for proof.mary was puzzled too, because she was not married and had not known man. She needed an explanaon and asked for it. The angel struck Zechariah mute, unable to speak, whereas Mary, because of her humble willingness, was found open to the Holy Spirit, and she conceived.
