Merton Prayer When the idea of Merciful Moments Blog first came about, I wanted to share ordinary, everyday examples of where I or others encountered love, mercy and/or some sort of God winks. Most of the me, the ideas come so very easily and I m so eager to share with you, dear reader, the good news or laughter, whatever I can to evoke a smile or brighten your day. While the sun shines and the birds sing today, my heart is heavy as I think of a beauful young woman, a devoted wife and mother who le us far too soon. I am le with very few words to speak or even write, but I can think of countless individuals in our community who shared love and support and precious me. I know there s lile I can say to offer comfort in difficult mes, but today I share a prayer that I have always found comforng. In my heart, I trust that our loving God can fill in the blanks when the words just won t come. All I can offer today is this Merton Prayer, a tender embrace, and if needed, a casserole. That will have to suffice for now. Godspeed, you incredible, brave Wonder Woman. Now you can finally rest. MyLord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. ButI believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. 5 Page Five St. Augusne s Church, Baldwinsville, New York June 17, 2018 Hand in Hand A collaboraon between St. Augusne s Parish and The Counseling Program at Catholic Charies Since 1996, The Counseling Program at Catholic Charies has worked with local parishes in the Syracuse Diocese to provide accessible, economically affordable counseling services for those in need. With the strong consensus of the Pastoral Council, the Finance Commiee, Social Acon Ministries (SAM), and the Tithing Commiee, St. Augusne s is the latest parish to join this iniave. With this effort, we hope many individuals, couples and families will benefit from this collaboraon. Here is what the service looks like: Each week, a caring, capable therapist comes to St. Augusne s to meet with individuals, couples and families requesng services. Starng with a process of thoughul listening, sessions are focused on assessing the challenges and developing an ongoing plan of support and intervenon. With keen awareness of the importance of privacy, all communicaons between the therapist and individual are kept completely confidenal. Depression, anxiety, loss, substance abuse, addic- on, trauma and family relaonship issues are common challenges that face those who are served. When compounded by major illness, unemployment and other financial struggles, these factors can devastate a family. Our therapist is prepared to help an individual/couple/family to stabilize and to find a path forward. Services to families are provided for a fee based on an individual or family s ability to pay. Our sliding fee scale ranges from $0 to $85 per session, with our commitment to provide low or no fee for services if needed. The parish s financial contribuon for the program assists in this low or no fee opon for those using the service. No one is turned away regardless of race, religion, sexual preference, gender identy, economic status or enrollment in the Parish. Requests for services are made directly to Catholic Charies by calling: Ellen Ketchum, LCSWR or John Sopchak, LMFT (on site therapist) The therapist will follow up with prospecve clients. Staff and other ministers from St. Augusne s and Catholic Charies partner to form a Care Commiee to supporvely respond to parish events and concerns. People choose counseling for many different reasons...but all come with the same hope...that tomorrow will be a beer day. Possible Summer Reading Group at St. Augusne s We have heard from our Scriptures read recently at Mass that we are called always to love one another and that each of us is a child of God. These are powerful phrases. God wants to be so close to us! And yet, we do not always demonstrate with our feelings, thoughts and acons that we are all sisters and brothers in Christ. Some in our community connue to be looked upon and treated with disrespect. For the past two summers, people from our parish have come together to discuss two books that get at our American challenge of race. How oen do we as individuals think about race? It seems clear from many people of color that they think about race many mes each day and that as much as we may think race relaons are improving, there seems to be a lot of recent happenings that do not bear that to be the case. This summer, we are considering reading a third book, this one wrien by an AfricanAmerican minister, Rev. Michael Eric Dyson, addressed to people of European dissent. The book is tled, Tears We Cannot Stop, A Sermon to White America and it was published in This book will likely be a challenge, but its words are presented based on love and trying to implement God s command to love one another. Would you like to read this book this Summer and, while doing so, get together for perhaps four weekly early evening sessions in the Gathering Room to share our thoughts? He will use a scythe ( blade ) to reap the crop when it is ready. Then he and his neighbors with him will gather it into piles, or pooks as they were called in England, so that the farmer by counng pooks could know how much grain to expect from his harvest. Next, threshing, separang the husks and straw from the grain, followed in older cultures by winnowing, which detached the heavier grain from the lighter chaff. The seeds of love are planted in human souls and grow up unobtrusively, easy to miss, as each person sleeps and wakes. This is the process described to me by an Irish friend as we drove around his country. He said this older method promoted community among farmers as they helped one another. The invenon in America of the combine in the early 19th century made it possible for each farmer to reap, thresh and winnow all alone, using the combine harvester. Despite all their efficiency, giant machinedriven harvesng makes it possible to forget the mystery of growth and human effort, as well as community. For his part, Jesus was much more interested in persons and the miracle of the yield. The first parable in thegospelfor Sunday shows us that. A farmer scaers seeds on the land and waits. His ordinary life then connues. He would sleep and rise night and day, and through it all the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. Jesus gives quiet admiraon to this act of life. Seeds begin as ny morsels and become, by the me the farmer can discern, sprouts. Then they burgeon into a whole field of crops, finally ready for harvest. The farmer has waited modestly for the mysterious process to take place. Jesus compares this everyday miracle to the Kingdom of God. The Catholic Encyclopedia says the Kingdom of God is a tone of mind (Luke 17:2021), that stands for an influence which must permeate men's minds if they would be one with [Jesus] and aain to his ideals (Catholic Encyclopedia, p. 646, The Kingdom of God ). Jesus says that a mustard seed is the smallest of all the seeds on earth. In fact it was not, so I am told. Smaller sll are the petunia, the begonia and orchid seeds. But the ny mustard seed (the size of a pinhead) unassumingly grows to be a great shrub or even a tree, one that is taller than a man s head! The white mustard species grew to ten or twelve feet with a stem the size of a man's arm! It was well known in Israel. How does this apply to the Kingdom of God? Well, we are small. The movements of the Spirit in us are so modest as to be nearly disregarded. Yet if we are paent, if we watch for growth within us, in winter and in spring rain, the Spirit gradually will surge up and will give us the yield of much fruit.
