1 Dear Friends, As you all know about thirty five CTK members and ten others from outside of the parish just returned from pilgrimage to the Eternal City of Rome. For centuries pilgrimage has been an integral part of the Catholic identity. In fact, in the Middle Ages often times a pilgrimage was often given as a penance after the Sacrament of Confession. One might be given the penitential task of walking from France to Santiago Compostella in Northwest Spain for example, to pray for the intercession of the Apostle St. James. He is entombed there at Compostella, Spain. Or, one might be charged with a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. These pilgrimages might take a couple of years as one would travel on foot! Fortunately ours only took nine days. On our pilgrimage we prayed at the tomb of St. Francis in Assisi. Among many other spiritual treasures given to the Church by St. Francis, one of the most beautiful is his love for animals and nature. I ve recently gotten a kitten. Her name is Lucy. I must say that this little cat is certainly one of the ways God reveals himself to me. After a long day, when I get home, she is there caring pretty much about nothing except for whether or not I will feed her and play with her. In her complete silliness, the message I receive from God is to not take life so seriously. This weekend we celebrate the Blessing of the Pets in honor of the Feast of St. Francis on Friday the 4th of October. We will do the pet blessing this Sunday at 12:30 PM at the Marian Grotto. Francis loved the larks flying about his hilltop town. He and his early brothers, staying in a small hovel, once allowed themselves to be displaced by a donkey. He wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God s living things. All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures. And there was even testimony in the cause for St. Clare of Assisi s canonization that referred to her little cat! That there are today over 62 million cats as pets and 72 million dogs as pets in the U.S. attests to the continuing affection we have for our furry, feathered or finned friends. We've even had a cat called Socks in the White House. Other popular presidential pets range from Abraham Lincoln s Fido to Lyndon Johnson s beagles, named Him and Her. Take the time to thank God this week for your pets and don t ever forget that He will use even your pets to communicate his message for our lives! Have a great week! Fr.
