LITURGY CORNER You are my beloved son In today s Gospel we heard God call Jesus my beloved Son. Luke describes the Holy Spirit descending like a dove upon Jesus as he was praying after his baptism. Jesus baptism marks the beginning of his public ministry. In his book Life of the Beloved, Henri Nouwen says, Self-rejection is the greatest enemy of the spiritual life because it contradicts the sacred voice that calls us the Beloved. When we embrace and live into the reality that being the Beloved expresses the core truth of our existence, we are ready to go forth, following in the footsteps of Jesus to love and serve others. In baptism we are configured to Jesus, named children of the light, and commissioned to go forth as beloved sons and daughters of God.

Why not make a commitment to do something to improve your marriage, like attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend? The next Marriage Encounter Weekends include: Jun and Nov in DANVILLE, CA. As we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, we also honor our own baptism as our initiation into the Christian life and community. In the Gospel, the baptism of Jesus, with his immersion and then emergence from the water, points to his later submission to God at his death, and his emergence from the grave at his resurrection. This pattern of death and resurrection is our path too, as followers of Jesus. Throughout life, often in small ways, we learn to surrender our limited and selfcentered agendas. This surrender often feels like death. The sacrament of Baptism ritually enacts this pattern to remind us of Jesus death and resurrection, so that we too might embrace the deaths and resurrections of our own lives. As Jesus emerged from the water, he encountered his Father and the Holy Spirit. Like Jesus, we can know we are God s beloved, empowered by the Spirit. For more information and/or to register for a Weekend, visit our website at: oaklandwwme.org or contact Chuck and Annie at applications@oaklandwwme.org or Second Collections January 20 Special Collection for Wildfire Relief - only at St. Albert the Great January 27 Weekly Goal Plate Received $10, Plate Received 9, ($ ) $10, , ($ 1,587.20) School Support Collection for December Weekly Goal Collection for January 5-6 Collection for December Weekly Goal Plate Received $10, , ($ 1,207.20)
3 ST. PHILIP NERI- ST. ALBERT THE GREAT Alameda, CA Page 3 The celebration of the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord brings to an end the season of Christmas. The Church recalls Our Lord's second manifestation or epiphany which occurred on the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan. Jesus descended into the river to sanctify its waters and to give them the power to beget sons of God. The event takes on the importance of a second creation in which the entire Trinity intervenes. In the Eastern Church this feast is called Theophany because at the baptism of Christ in the River Jordan, God appeared in three persons. The baptism of John was a sort of sacramental preparatory for the Baptism of Christ. It moved men to sentiments of repentance and induced them to confess their sins. Christ did not need the baptism of John. Although He appeared in the "substance of our flesh" and was recognized "outwardly like unto ourselves," He was absolutely sinless and impeccable. He conferred upon the water the power of the true Baptism which would remove all the sins of the world: "Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him Who takes away the sin of the world." Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's baptism are symbolical of what happened at our Baptism. At Christ's baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him; at our Baptism the Trinity took its abode in our soul. At His baptism Christ was proclaimed the "Beloved Son" of the Father; at our Baptism we become the adopted sons and daughters of God. At Christ's baptism the heavens were opened; at our Baptism heaven was opened to us. At His baptism Jesus prayed; after our Baptism we must pray to avoid actual sin. The first century Christians were much more imbued with awe for that great Sacrament of Baptism. We remember the anniversary of our physical birth but how many of us remember the anniversary of the moment when we received the life of our soul as children of God? It is through baptism we are born into the life of grace and become sons and daughters of God. Parents and godparents, let us remember the promise we made for our children at the time of baptism. Robert K Chinnapan Collection for all Christmas Masses $24, Thank you for your generosity! This collection will help offset our weekly deficit throughout the year.
